Texas school superintendent salaries continue to rise, despite falling enrollments and flagging student performance, leaving taxpayers wondering what they are getting for their money. Newly released Texas Education Agency data for the 2023-24 school year shows eight superintendents with salaries above $400,000 and another 81 receiving $300,000 or more. Texas’ highest-paid school superintendent was again Cypress-Fairbanks ISD’s Mark Henry, who pulled down a base salary of $536,775 before retiring in December 2023. Last school year, 77 superintendents received taxpayer-funded salaries above $300,000, with five making $400,000 or more. During the 2021-22 school year, 60 superintendents scored salaries at or above...

Florida’s red wave is already wiping out school superintendents across the Sunshine State. Backed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and conservative activist groups, right-leaning candidates have gained control of many major district school boards and are purging prior leadership. “Parents woke up in the last few years,” a newly elected school board member backed by the conservative Moms for Liberty advocacy group told The Post. “They were exposed to the garbage that has gone on behind closed doors for so many years. That’s finished.” A trio of superintendents have been shown the campus door in GOP-leaning districts in November alone —...

The Christie administration is worried that school district chiefs will try to skirt a new salary cap by extending their old contracts. Education Commissioner Bret Schundler told county superintendents to start imposing the cap on new contracts now rather than waiting until the new rules are formally in place. Last week the governor announced that to curb "exorbitant" wages and save taxpayers’ money, no district superintendents should make more than his own $175,000 salary, unless they work in the biggest cities or earn bonuses. Christie said the cap would take effect for superintendents when their individual contracts expired, and the...

TRENTON — Gov. Chris Christie Thursday revealed a plan to end the bidding wars that have fattened school superintendents’ salaries, saying he will limit their pay based on how many students they serve and offer bonuses tied to student achievement. The proposal would mean salary cuts for 366 superintendents at the end of their current contracts, saving school districts $9.8 million, the Republican governor said. The new rules also would encourage districts to share superintendents and administrative teams, reducing the overlap in those positions and producing more savings, Education Commissioner Bret Schundler said. ... Maximum pay for superintendents would be...
