A San Antonio man has lost his job because he’s unable to post bail after he was arrested in the aftermath of the biker melee in Waco. Diego N. Obledo, 40, doesn’t have a motorcycle but was arrested after driving friends in his Toyota Venza to the Twin Peaks restaurant where the brawl broke out, according to San Antonio lawyer A.L. Hernden, who is helping the family. Hernden said Diego Obledo was “just standing around” but was caught up in the sweep as 170 people were arrested by Waco law officers. More than 30 are from this area. Obledo has...

USAA wants to take to the skies in an effort to fast-track insurance claims. The financial services company, whose members include U.S. military personnel and their families, asked the Federal Aviation Administration for permission to test unmanned aircraft last week, becoming the first insurance provider to seek an exemption. Since commercial drone use is prohibited by regulators, USAA has conducted four years of research in partnership with the FAA and public entities. The exemption would pave the way for independent testing of small drones that could help USAA quickly settle insurance claims during natural disasters.

~ EXCERPT ~ USAA, the financial services company catering to military members, is preparing to give some members an advance loan on their paychecks if the debt ceiling negotiations disrupt their pay. USAA said it would provide the interest-free advances to military members on active duty who already have their military pay directly deposited in a USAA account. The one-time loan would be for eligible members' Aug. 15 paycheck. Several Republican lawmakers had introduced a bill into Congress looking to make military pay the top priority in the event a deal isn't reached. A spokesman for Sen. Pat Toomey (R.,...

Thanks to the more than 750,000 e-mails and phone calls generated by USAA members, employees and friends, there is now widespread and bipartisan understanding that an amendment to the Volcker Rule would be good for consumers. I am writing today to let you know that the Senate has approved its legislation and directed a committee crafting the final bill to specifically consider the concerns you raised....

Officials of U.S. Strategic Command, in short STRATCOM, are reiterating caution for countering incidences of identity theft on the Internet, following the discovery of a widely spreading 'phishing' scam that's targeting service members. Phishing, which is described as the practice of tricking people into giving away their private information like account numbers or passwords online, is usually carried out through phishing e-mails. During May 2009 to March 2010, a number of fake e-mails were delivered into the inboxes of financial clients belonging to Navy Federal Credit Union and USAA, said STRATCOM officials via one recently published news report. Standard.net reported...

S.3217 was approved by the Senate Thursday night, setting up a conference committee of senators and representatives to reconcile differences between the Senate's bill and a financial reform bill approved by the House of Representatives last December. In calling for a final vote on S.3217, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., directed the Senate to consider specific instructions for the Senate's representatives on the conference committee. Those instructions will include the need to recognize...

Rarely in our 87-year history have we turned to USAA members to weigh in with elected representatives on an issue of great importance. But, we are now. The U.S. Senate currently is considering legislation (S.3217) that would impose new rules on the nation's financial services industry, including USAA. As the leading provider of financial services to America's military community, USAA supports financial services reform. However, the current Senate bill would disproportionally impact USAA because we are a unique and fully integrated association. USAA is not like the banks and other companies that helped bring down our economy, and we never...
