In 1991 Basic Training they were ramping up for Desert Storm, they opened up old buildings at Fort Sill for our Battery and gave us really old M16s; one of the Drills explained that yes, these were the early ones that jammed which meant we had to keep them clean and oiled religiously.

When we got to my actual unit I got a brand new M16 A2 still in the packing grease, which was so great! Woooo hoo!

They were fine in the 60’s. McNamara’s DOD changed the powder spec for more pressure and it was too dirty and the troops didn’t have cleaning equipment.

Impingement AR 15’s are really dirty weapons and take a long time to clean. That crud gets everywhere and it takes almost an hour to clean after shooting.

Barrels and chambers were not chromed either. Tropical environment led to corrosion and pitting within the chamber so brass could become lodged in the chamber and the extractor could tear off the base of the cartridge case.

If you don’t clean it chromed or not it will be a goner in no time.

They’re susceptible to jamming when they get dirty. And it’s easy to get dirty in the field.

Thanks...
I tend to Over clean if That’s possible.
I think it’s a great platform as I really had accuracy problems with the Mini-14 !
Seems the AR is working fine There !
