“Not sure what the average Hawaiian eats every day,”
I lived on Maui for three years and worked for a five-star resort. Yes, the tourists did have poi at luaus, etc., but locals ate it all the time. In the employee lunch room, most of us ate well, (and free). The leftovers from hoity-toity convention meals were there, and regular stuff as well.
The employees who were local grabbed the poi as fast as possible, then congregated together in their own group and ate weird stuff — including the poi. (Another ethnic group also gathered together and ate even weird-er things, but I won’t go there. Smelled really bad.)
Take the packets of Ketchup/Mayo (Not Miracle Whip !!!) and Sweet Pickle Relish/salt & pepper and mix up for instant on the fly Russian/Thousand Island Dressing while you're on the run or out Camping with limited cooling/refrigeration space.
Learned that from a Lady that I Dated. That's how it was made at High End Hotel She worked at. They used the gallon tubs instead of the packets. Make it by the color/taste by adjusting the amount of ketchup and mayonnaise.
I wouldn't be sure that You were fed a real Mango if it tasted that bad.
