so I stopped playing these sports with girls.

Interesting. My son used to play intramural indoor soccer and the university forced them to have coed teams. He hated playing with girls because he felt he had to hold himself back for fear of hurting them. I can understand wanting to go all out when you play, so this was very frustrating to him.

MPO (my personal opinion) but I think the father way overreacted. Considering the lack of malicious forethought, the girl's willing entry into the game (knowing it was tackle football, after all) ... I just can't see how a reasonable father could get very angry with you. I should think his first and enduring concern would be to get the facts about the medical care his daughter needed, and see to her care. You were contrite, responsible enough to get her home, and it was an accident.

In short, Bonaparte, by proxy, on behalf of the girl and her father, I absolve you! Seriously.

This tradition has been in my family for years. With the exception of corn and peas, I follow my maternal grandmother's Thanksgiving dinner. Corn and peas were added after I married. I'm the only one who will eat rutabaga or squash in this house. (good....more for me) LOL

Like you, I add lots of butter and mash like potatoes. I may try adding a little sugar. Thanks for the hint.

I look forward to 'baga and squash twice a year,Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Thankyou for lifting this burden off my shoulders, Gretchen. It looked a lot worse than it was and I had no idea what had actually happened to her until later. For her Dad, it was just the straw that broke the camel's back. His other daughter and I fought a lot and I think he was tired of her coming home in tears. When I showed up with this other one, covered in mud and looking completely shell-shocked, it sent him over the edge. I wasn't going to even ring the bell, just leave her on the front porch and maybe hitch-hike to Argentina. Since everybody was going to hate me anyway, I figured I wouldn't be missed.

Anyway, it turned out that she tried to block a pass but closed her eyes, got clipped on the ear by the ball, lost her balance and was lying there on the ground when two guys locked in a tackle fell on her. So she took about 350 pounds of big daddy splash-down on the ribs. Not knowing any of this at the time, I looked at all that blood at her ear, the rapid shallow breathing, the speechlessness, the groaning and the agony in her eyes and I just knew she had brain damage and was going to die and it was all my fault for letting her in the game and I was going to hell for sure.

After "dropping her off," I walked around in the rain for quite awhile, trying to think of how I was going to explain this to my parents or whether I should even try.

In time, her ribs healed up and everything blew over. But I never played sports with girls again.

When my dad was in his late teens he was a Bevan boy (national service coal miner) and was sent to the midlands. Hockey was very big in his area and occasionally they played mixed hockey he dreaded the games, he was not that brilliant at it (soccer is his game) and the women went all out to prove they were better than the men.

The next week when he reported to Stoke where he was on the ground staff as a soccer player he was immediately put on the injury list as were several of the others who were involved in the hockey game.

They came to the conclusion the women were just as if not more competitive, rough dirty players and they need not worry about hurting them but needed to look out for themselves.

I guess if you are involved in a sport as an adult women at a reasonable level it is much different than younger females playing sport.

I am sure that some of the top women soccer teams in England would give as good as they get with some of the lower league men's teams and in many cases would be more skillful.

The Vietnamse can be wonderful people and strong friends. I'm glad we are letting go of the past a bit and opening up to people who are actually happy to have us as friends.

Hear! Hear! I second your opinion.

I am not keen on squashes as vegetables to me they do not have enough flavour but then I have only had them boiled and with nothing much added for flavour. This is how they served them when I was in New England in 1997 and how my mother and grandmother served the English equivalent the marrow.

Having said that the marrow has even less taste very similar I would say to a courgette in texture but not the flavour. If mashed with lots of butter and pepper can be quite pleasant but very watery if you boil it to cook. I think if I ever cook a marrow again I will steam it like I do pumpkin.

In case you are not familiar with marrow this is a marrow.

Traditional way of serving marrow
Click here. Must admit never heard of the toast bit before though maybe this is an Irish addition.

Here is another definition of marrow

Probably the most traditional way in Britain of using marrow apart from a side vegetable is to make jam. In the olden days when the ordinary people could not afford fruit and during the war certain root vegetables were substituted and even to this day cheaper fruit pie fillings with shaped pieces do have vegetable additions to them. Mum used to grow marrow and she loved ginger in Britain we have a product that used to be called ginger marmalade because it has no citrus fruit apart from that used to get it to set it has to be called ginger preserve now. Marrow and ginger jam is a cheaper version of this and we used to make it when we grew marrows - recipe below.

Ginger and Marrow Jam

This recipe was used during the Second World War when fruit was very hard to come by but vegetables such as marrows were easier to grow.

Ingredients
1.8 Kilogram Marrow, peeled and cubed (4 lb)
1.8 Kilogram Sugar, peeled (4 lb)
2 Lemons, zest and juice
40 Gram Dried root ginger (1 1/2 oz)

Method
Makes 3.5 kg (8 lb)
Add the marrow, lemon zest and juice and ginger (which may be put in a small muslin bag to the pan. Cover with sugar and leave for 24 hours.

Next day, heat carefully until the sugar has dissolved and boil rapidly until 2.3 kg (5 lb) jam is obtained, by which time the marrow should be nearly transparent and the syrup thick. Remove the ginger, skim, pot and cover.

I dare say you could use other squashes as long as they are virtually tasteless, if you grow a courgette (zucchini) very large it basically becomes a marrow and has much less flavour than the smaller ones - in fact tastes like marrow, I suspect they originally were the same vegetable.

Read my post 226 many men having played mixed hockey in Britain never play sports with women again for the opposite reason you did not.

Hope this makes you feel better as well.

Reading definition of marrow and courgette again it is one and the same you just eat the courgette when it is younger but leave it and it becomes a marrow.

Today WAS the National Championship, whether they call it that or not. No one else is close to the quality of Ohio State other than Michigan. I'm sure they'll drop in the BCS rankings, but I don't think they should......JMHO.

I ran to the store last night and heard on ESPN radio some guy saying that before the game he didn't think OSU/UM should play for the National Championship since they already would have played. He said, though, that after watching the game he had changed his mind--the two best teams had met and they should meet again. It would be so interesting!

We were kind of joking about how the loser of this game would be going to the Rose Bowl--it seemed so odd to say that! :)

I love your flashing "Go Blue!" So neat. DH and I are 'blue bloods' in a sea of red/black (Georgia), orange (Tennessee), and navy/white/gold (Georgia Tech). Whenever we are out and dh sees someone with a UM hat, shirt, etc., on, he asks them if they went to school there--more often than not, though, they just like the clothes!

Thank you all my dear sisters and brothers of America. How are you?

“Dear fellow American friends. As you see unfolding events of enemy and same while you’re being ridicule, great President of your great nation marches on, you also see deception of enemy, which wants to destroy essence of your liberty and freedom.

I would like to make something clear; Iraq was liberated not invaded to remove dictator for his psychopathic agenda; though there is other one in Persia, who is dictator and murder of his own people. Your people have fought gallantly and with honor. And so they will continue to spread freedom and liberty, and this is why my dear American friends Christianity and Judaism is under attack, for we believe in truth.

Consequences of lies are like a stone thrown on water, et will go to bottom. Truth will sustain itself for is what is: Truth!!!

Liberals, socialist and others are from same group; that is from communistic agenda to destroy freedom of each human, for power and greed is what they want. Their pride is nothing but agenda of themselves. They have allowed evil to corrupt their heart and His Majesty has blind them, so they think they are winning. How foolish are they. I pray with you that people will see a truth and know there is a hope and battle can not be won without a fight and death, though in reality there is no death.

Realism of facts in Iraq and Afghanistan as well in Holy Land of Israel are that Israel will go on; land of Mesopotamia will have to remove ideology of small group of people who are using their views against people of good heart.

Communism was on ideology, it came to be what? Nazism was ideology it came to be what?

Blood bath of elite of tyrants and their self indulgence and pride will not go unpunished.

Your President understands this as well some. He has faith and he truly believes in freedom. He stands for truth. I would like also remind people who thing America is doing badly in Iraq; what you see in television is only one side of view of those who have their agenda and their goal. Reality though is different.”

thank you all

The gore is bad, but the length of time you had to deal with it was shorter than in Ryan (which I watched through the fringe of an afghan :). It was set up more like "We Were Soldiers" where you went back and forth from the battles to peaceful scenes, so a person like me could reqroup.

There were sections when I just shut my eyes, but a couple of times it was too late.

I know there's a debate about it, but these were the two best teams in the country. Michigan is awesome.

I really think they should play again in Arizona, but I doubt that would happen. As far as I'm concerned, Michigan is #2, and should stay there.
