The minimum wage should be ERASED along with the income tax, and folks will suddenly find jobs that they can live decently with.

Don’t forget that for every nickel the employEE pays in income tax, the employER pays 7 cents!

One thing this article, and articles like it, never mention is: how many people actually make minimum wage? I think the answer is somewhere around 1% of all workers.

$7.25 an hour? What a joke.

To give you a sense of just how meaningless some of these numbers are, consider this . . . hiring an illegal immigrant in my neck of the woods would cost you at least $12/hour in cash.

Funny how they keep “bumping into” Fawn every time a minimum wage story comes up.

Fawn fails to realize a couple of things. When the minimum wage hike goes into effect, not only will she probably not be able to find a second job, her primary employer may cut her hours to save money.

Does she realize how horribly expensive it is to own a car? By that, I am talking about DMV fees, smog checks, and bare bones insurance. The kind of car she can afford will probably be held together with chicken wire and duct tape. I hope she knows how to do her own tune-ups.

Being on the low end of the pay scale, I know what happens when minimum wage hikes are announced. All I have to do is look at my local help wanted ads in the newspaper. I’m not blaming businesses for trying to keep their heads above water.

I’m not sure about the minimum wage.. but I believe trade schools and nursing school type schools should be free and pay the people enough they can eat and rent and get to the school.

The government would very quickly get back the costs of those skills by taxes on those people in the future. In my city I’ve seen people get stuck in poverty. Especially single mothers. They have to stay at the dead end job to meet the next few months payments.

I have long said that the minimum wage needs to be buried along side all of the other ridiculous communist / socialist economic theories.

Exactly. The problem is that once ridiculous communist / socialist economic theories are put into practice they're almost impossible to end until they've totally destroyed whatever they're supposed to be "helping".

The article mentions it, but I think they left out the illegal invader numbers.

About 1.7 million people made $5.15 or less in 2006, according to the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics.

You’re right, I didn’t see it. Although, I was looking for a percentage of the working population. I guess 1.7 million is close to 1%.

I have long said that the minimum wage needs to indexed to inflation. With year small increases to reflect teh increase in inflation.

The minimum wage needs to be abolished. Let the market decide. Those who have no ambition and aren't productive should not be rewarded at the expense of those who are productive.

More importantly, what kind of workers make up that 1%? It’s mostly high school or college kids or spouses who work part time to earn a little extra money while the bulk of their income comes from their significant other. Only 7.5% of minimum wage workers are the sole bread winners of a family.

When did the States grant the Federal government the power to set wages for the private sector? I just don’t find it in the United States Constitution.

If the federal government went back to its actual constitutional powers only it would have to shrink to about ten percent of its current size.

The current NC minimum wage is $6.15, so she is already earning 30 cents more an hour than the new Federal minimum wage.

This story is BS! She is a plant from ACORN, of which she is a member.

Either the author of this article is a liar or didn't check out the source for the story.

“Finally, North Carolina workers get the raise they deserve. People all over the state are struggling to get by and this is just the first step to making sure that people are paid a fair wage for their work,” said ACORN member Fawn Townsend. I believe trade schools and nursing school type schools should be free and pay the people enough they can eat and rent and get to the school.

What do you mean "free"? Do you mean those schools should take the financial hit and teach these students at no cost, or do you mean the government should pay for it? If you mean the govt should pay, then you really mean that I should pay with my taxes.

If the type of occupations that yield a trade or nursing school education don't pay enough for rent or food, then those who wish to pursue that career should really think it over first.

And just because YOU think they should be free doesn't mean everyone else will. What if I think that medical school should be free so we can have more doctors? Then those who go to beauty school think THEIR education should be free. Once you give a "free" piece of the pie to one group, others start reaching for the knife to get their piece, too.

“Fast-food waitress Fawn Townsend of Raleigh, N.C., knows exactly what she is going to do if her salary goes up with Tuesday’s increase in the federal minimum wage: start saving for a car so she can find a second job to make ends meet.”

Why would her hourly pay go if the federal minimum wage increase is from $5.15 an hour to $5.85. She lives in North Carolina where the minimum wage is $6.15 an hour. North Carolina raised its minimum wage from $5.15 to $6.15 in January 2007. We here have already seen the down side of higher prices because of this.
