It all depends on what the cost of living is.

I remember a time when earning $10,000 a year was darned near wealthy.

Mark Twain did a funny scene about the cost of living and the relevancy of concurrent wages in A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Try as he might, Hank could NOT get the locals to understand why his seemingly-high wages "at home" did not make him wealthy.

I mean government funded school. I also think the military should be in charge of medicaire/medicaid and also give free schooling for doctors, nurses, physicians assistants and so on. Any commercially valuable degree I would have government funded school as an option.

The thing is we already are paying for the cost of poor people, so we might as well spend money to mitigate poverty and have a more highly trained valuable workforce. Instead of helping them with housing subsidy, healthcare for their children, and even k-12 which they aren’t paying for with a low wage.

If we decide that we aren’t going to help people at all, which I am also ok with that direction.. then I can see not helping to make the workforce more valuable and skilled.

I have long said that the minimum wage needs to indexed to inflation.

The minimum wage needs to be abolished. States are already raising their minimums anyway, no need for the fedgov to do it on its end.

I’m not sure about the minimum wage.. but I believe trade schools and nursing school type schools should be free and pay the people enough they can eat and rent and get to the school.

Does our website need a new slogan? How about "Socialist Workers Of The World, Unite"?

With Republicans like this, we really don't need Democrats.

Fast-food waitress Fawn Townsend of Raleigh, N.C., ...

... said Townsend, who is 24 and single.

Gee Fawn, how about you drop by your nearest recruiting station?

I'm sure they will set you up with a job paying far more than minimum wage, keep you from having to get a second job, and provide you with room, board, food, skills, educational benefits towards college, etc., etc.

What's that Fawn --- you don't want to join up, make more money, get some good benefits, and support/defend your country?

Oh, I see, it's not really about the money at all, is it Fawn?

If it was, you'd go where the money is available, instead of pushing for continuing the Socialist minimum wage baloney, wouldn't you?

I have long said that the minimum wage needs to indexed to inflation. With year small increases to reflect teh increase in inflation.

Why? That makes sense of course if you think it is at a good level at a certain date... therefore index it to inflation. But why do you want to get between an employer and an employee? If an employer wants to pay someone $4 per hour, and the employee says ok, why do you want to get inbetween their transaction?

If you jack the rate up to $6 or $7, and the employer backs out of hiring anyohe, have you done the now unemployed employee a favor?

Why not all schools? Why not my MBA? This might be news to you, but you are a socialist.

This raise is long overdue.

I don’t think the government has any business setting wages for people who don’t work for the government. I can’t believe it has gone on as long as it has.

"When you go into the grocery story now, you may be checking your own groceries, you may be bagging your own groceries,"

Annoying as hell too, when the half-a&&ed scanning/checking machines back up about every tenth item and won't check alcohol, to boot.

Most employers will not grant automatic overtime. You must request if ahead of time, otherwise, you are SOL.

note the multitude of inconsistencies in this article. “Fawn” is making over the Fed min anyway and Fawn probably doest’t work as a waitress, as she is a Acorn member. Typical reporting and typical liberal tactics

Don't hold your breath for a reply. I asked a similar question on one of these "I want money from the government" threads and never received an answer.

As if it isn't bad enough that the public at large is largely socialistic, there are a lot of people on FR these days that are too. They seem to not be bothered with the idea of the government stealing from their neighbors so long as they can get a piece of the loot.

Incase you missed it we are providing healthcare, schooling, housing etc.. to poor people and a growing number of middle class. The Bush plan so far has been to increase spending as the number needing help grew. My plan is instead to spend the money reducing the number of people needing help.

It all started as various excuses for W. That is, conservatives who liked Bush would make up various reasons why the medicare or education bills was ok. Apparently, they have started believing their own propaganda.

“I see some full time employees becoming part time employees.”

exactly...they will be cut to the limit where benefits will no longer have to be paid.

And then the libs will crow about heartless business owners dropping workers from health insurance.
