It’s worse in Russia - criticize Putin or the War, and you get thrown out a window

Why is that worse? Dead is dead.

Here is why this is much worse:

From what I've seen Putin's goons go after powerful opponents who are also in the Russian political game. They are most frequently described as "oligarchs". That's still not good, but it's like the difference between a UFC fighter getting drunk and smashing a UFC rival in the face, and smashing a waitress in the face.

Has Putin killed any American journalists?

And what makes it all far worse to me:

We (America) are paying for it? On the one hand you have a repressive regime that America opposes at every step. On the other you have a repressive regime that America supports, including paying the salaries of the guards who killed Gonzalo.

As an American the latter is far more offensive to me. (As a Canadian maybe you don't feel that way?)

Gonzalo was an American journaliat. Clearly, given that Zelenskyy is our puppet, the Biden regime could have had him put on the next plane home with a phone call. Look at all the effort they put into getting the black woman basketball star home.

So, another reason that this is way more offensive than the KGB killing a Russian rival of Putin is that this is essentially the Biden regime killing a journalist who was highly critical of him.

That's incredibly "worse" to me. I don't know much about Canada, it seems pretty totalitarian, so maybe it's normal to you that your government is colluding to have its critics killed.

It hasn't been common or acceptable in the USA ... but now seens to be being made acceptable.

That sucks. So does Americans excusing it or making false moral equivelence claims to downplay the seriousness of it. Even coming from a Canadian it's puzzling and irritating.

I don't think Lira was a US citizen but that doesn't justify what Ukraine did.

During the Obama years the US gov prosecuted Lara for reentering the US after he was deported.

Compare the welcome illegals get from Mayorkas.

I think Tucker and Musk are incorrect about Lara being a US citizen but Ukraine didn’t have to let him die in prison. See link in post #21.

The latest budget shows almost $$$900 billion allotted to Defense alone, a mere $$$700 billion for Domestic…..( from memory last week), doesn’t anyone see something wrong with this?

I didn’t understand your post, what percentage is spent on defense and non-defense?

“ The US Congress approved a staggering defense budget of $886 billion for 2024 on Thursday, while also extending a controversial overseas electronic surveillance system widely used by US intelligence services.

The vast spending bill, adopted in the House of Representatives after a vote in the Senate on Wednesday, provides billions of dollars to “enhance US deterrence and defense posture in the Indo-Pacific region” and counter China’s rising influence there.…”

https://www.barrons.com/news/us-congress-passes-huge-886-bn-defense-budget-for-2024-823a5dcb

This is in addition to the $700 billion “ everything else “ spending.

…..more clearly stated:

“The deal would establish an overall spending level of $1.59 trillion in fiscal year 2024, reflecting the bipartisan budget deal struck last year by President Joe Biden and then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Johnson, R-La., told colleagues in a letter. The breakdown is $886 billion for the military and $704 billion for nondefense spending, Johnson said.”

I am calling the Biden destruction a reenactment of the ‘Spanish Inquisition’... bend the knee to Baal or die. Gonzalo surely knew which side was more bloody. Really now what does ‘Build back better’ literally mean? Bunch of devils.

“When asked about Lira’s reported death by Newsweek, a State Department spokesperson said they could “confirm the death of a U.S. citizen in Ukraine.””

I think Gonzalo was an American citizen...

I’m still not clear what you are getting at.

It’s possible that he was deported around 2012 and then was nationalized later, but usually deportation is a negative when dealing with the state department. Lira is not an uncommon name though.

I do not disagree.. it has been some months since I paid attention to his ‘reporting’…. After he was first arrested I knew he was a dead man. At that time it appeared by those who spoke about him good or bad he was a US citizen..

Zelensky has to pay for this and all the other deaths he’s caused - many assassinations, and of course the 180,000 or whatever it is Ukro soldiers, and Russian soldiers (far fewer thankfully).

Evidence?

BTW Putins’ popularity is 70-80%. People are doing very well in Russia.

Much or most of our national defense budget is based on defending us from Russia.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Which is a stupid criminal waste of money. Russia has no desire to attack or conquer the US.
Sad he died but this guy seemed to have a death wish. People would warn him to be careful with what he was writing or he would be in trouble
~~~~~~~~~~~

Exactly. People should only say and write after getting the okay from the government censors!

Sorry if current events don’t validate your Boomer Cold War nostalgia, but it is 2023, not 1983.

Thread winner.

Is it not concerning that our total budget gives almost $$$ 900 billion in Defense spending alone and only $$$ 700 billion for expenses to run the country?
