I was at work at my job as ammo accountant at the Naval Strike and Warfare Center, Top Gun Ordnance, Fallon NV when a guy ran into our office shouting that a plane had hit the WTC. I immediately went to the Free Republic site to see what was going on. It wasn’t long before the flight schedule was cancelled and I was told to get live missiles for our F-18s ASAP. I tell you what, base weapons usually drags their feet when I order ordnance for immediate delivery, but this time the ordnance beat out jets to the loading area!

These are the over 3,000 that my city puts up every year to commemorate 9-11 and to remind us not to EVER forget what happened.

I read each and every one of your poignant and heartfelt stories, and I'm so thankful for all of you and your love of this country. Your stories were so vivid....like it was only yesterday. And that is how it seems in our minds. Like it was yesterday. I pray that this kind of thing never happens again....but if, God forbid, it does, that Americans will yet again stand tall and protect this great country from all evils, foreign or domestic. Keep you heads held high, patriots. We will always be proud AMERICANS!!

LA International is busier than Nashville so y’all noticed an even bigger difference than we did. We’re far enough away from Nashville that we don’t hear the planes flying overhead because they’re waaaaaay on up there. Like you, we’d hear an occasional military plane in the vicinity.

I honestly didn’t pay attention during 2020 though I know there were a lot fewer aircraft in the skies.

One airport that didn’t slow down was Ted Stevens at Anchorage. It was busier than ever, and it’s a busy airport to begin with. I watch that on live stream, like I’m doing right now, and there was a constant flow in and out.
The Lake Hood Seaplane Base next door, where the camera is set up, was dead though. It picked up last year and is in full swing this year.

Howdy, EGC! ((hugs)) Glad y'all had fun at the lake. Looks like Gizmo found the perfect cool spot to rest up for the next part of the adventure!

It’s very stunning and compelling. I won’t say you’ll “enjoy” it, but you won’t forget it soon.

I, too, logged onto FR swiftly that morning. Unfortunately, I can’t remember that FR username.

What I was doing before suddenly became unimportant, and dealing with “September 11” related problems suddenly became paramount.

I was at work. My sister called me to say a plane had flown into the World Trade Center. They sent us home early. Flight 93 was flying over our county in Western Pa and they were afraid it was headed for a major power plant here. Of course it was headed for DC, but nobody knew what was going on at that point. It was a surreal, sad day.

The day before we had driven from N. California to secluded resort on the Oregon coast. We had planned a 2 week celebration for our anniversary, staying at nice places and me fishing the September run of Ocean salmon in the coastal rivers.

We drove all day, checked in and had room service and went to bed and crashed. The next morning I woke up early and planned on watching tv after figuring out what to order.

The first plane had crashed and just as my wife was waking up, the second plane crashed into the second building. My wife asked why I was watching some bad movie. Then I turned on the sound, and she realized what had happened and started to cry.

We decided to cancel our reservations, gasup, repack and drive home.

While I was gassing up our OJ Simpson Bronco, my wife cancelled our reservations via the phone. I stopped by the desk, and they gave us a low rate and carry up breakfast and some sandwiches. While I was at the front desk, some librarians from Canada were laughing and joking. That stopped quickly after some harsh words in a nautical way.

A few minutes later I was parked at the loading zone for our room. A couple was waiting for us as a cone was in the parking spot. They had checked in and were waiting for us to leave. The young man even helped us get our luggage and gear down and into our vehicle. My wife couldn’t believe they were ignoring what had happened.

Radio reception is not the greatest on Oregon coastal 1, and My Moto flip phone was basically a brick. So, we didn’t know was happening. We stopped for lunch at one of the MO’s and sat by the bar and watched tv. We learn that both towers had
collapsed, the Pentagon had been hit by another suicide plane and a plane had crashed in rural PA.

I was wearing a US Navy baseball hat with a CT pin. That got us the first of many thank yous, our lunches donated/compted.

Our next stop was the Inn In Gold Beach where we had a week’s reservation for the next week. The clerk cancelled the ressies and got us ressies in Brookings at a hotel, where we had planned to finish our vacation.

In Brookings, the clerk told me to unload the luggage we needed for the night and to go fill up our gas tank. They would take my wife and overnite luggage to our room.

The gasoline station looked like a wild west scene with people try to fill 5 gallon cans in spite of signs saying to only put gas into vehicle tanks and a 10 gallon limit.

When I got back to the hotel’s front desk to pay and find out where my wife was, 2 black suburbans pulled and 6 guys and gals in blue black suits got out each vehicle, stretched while the lead guy went to the office. He saw my hat asked me wait outside.

He was an retired Army ASA guy, and he filled me in how his group was assembled, geared up and packed into 2 vehicles.
They were from the SF Bay area and were spending the night there and then heading to the Seatac or Portland airports as more security.

He suggested that my wife and I leave after breakfast the next morning to go home. If he felt there were potential problems driving home, he would let me know.

In the meantime, our friendly checkin clerk had made dinner reservations at a great pizza place. Most of the other restaurants were closed. The pizza place had 3 birthday parties scheduled for kids, and the staff decided to stay open to serve the kids and people like my wife and I. They refused to charge us and gave us a pizza for our lunch the next day.

Surprisingly, I slept like a rock as soon as my head hit the pillow.

My wife didn’t and woke me at about 6:30 am. We had a message light, and my new friend said, “Go home. Be safe! He and his crew left around midnight and headed north.

We had cold pizza for breakfast and lunch.

The drive home was basically uneventful. We couldn’t figure out why American flags were attached to most vehicles.

We had family members and friends from LA to the middle of
Oregon, in London and in DC. Everyone but the England crew got home quickly and contacted us.

Wonderful story. Glad you got home safely.

I flew to CA a week after it happened…very nervous flight, that one….because I had reservations to see my AF son in the SF area. I’ve NEVER seen so many flags flying in CA and never have since, but there was patriotism in the air at that time.

“I remember thinking that there was so much fire load in those buildings that they were going to come down.”

Fire doesn’t burn steel. Where did the buildings go?

A rule of thumb is that steel loses 1/2 of it’s strength at 1000* F. That JetA burns at about 1500* F so the steel is at significantly less than design strength. No building is going to be overbuilt to that degree. Those buildings were coming down the second they were hit and nothing was going to change that fact.

Our next door neighbors were in London when 9/11 happened.

They were told not to try calling the airport or airline, as they would call them when flights back to the USA were okayed.

Then, there was a priority list, and retired people like this couple were at the growing bottom number. They were stranded in London for a few weeks.

There was a group of local business owners and politicians from our home town in DC as lobbyists, when the towers were struck. Their flights home were cancelled. They rented two vans and drove from DC to the west coast. They set up a trip log report with local newspapers and radio stations.

Steel also expands with temperature. At 1000*F and a 200’ beam it expands to 212-214’. That much out of perpendicular also is going to significantly reduce the ability of the structure to withstand the load above it.

There are plenty of videos of building collapse on YouTube if you want to look. As a rule a wood structure will just collapse into itself and a metal or concrete with metal trusses will pooch the walls out and collapse.

Did you watch the video? Where did the steel go?

For one example, there were 45,000 file cabinets in the buildings.

Only one mangled file cabinet was found. Strange.
