WJLA, ABC-7 Releases New Poll on Governor's Race Weekend Poll Shows 48-48 Dead Heat Among Registered and Likely Voters
RICHMOND - A new statewide poll conducted October 6 and 7 by WJLA, ABC-7 shows a dead heat between Republican Mark Earley and Democrat Mark Warner in the race to be the next governor of Virginia. The poll shows both candidates receiving 48 percent support from likely and registered voters, with a 4.5 percent margin of error. One percent favored Redpath, one was undecided, and one percent chose "other." The poll of 500 registered and likely voters is conducted each Saturday and Sunday and released the following Monday. The new poll is a major shift from the WJLA poll released October 2, which showed Earley trailing Warner 44-50.

Two words of caution.
1) It's only one poll, but it does seem to continue Earley's momentum.
2) It's a weekend poll.
This came from a VA GOP E-mail, but it is not yet posted anywhere I could find. I did, however, confirm the results with Earley's NoVa headquarters, and Captain Jack Aubrey said WJLA will post the results on www.wjla.com sometime this evening after the news.
If you've been holding off contributing time and/or money to the Earley campaign, now is the time to really make it count!

i wonder if other polls will show this trend, and I wonder how reliable is the ABC Station poll.

It's as reliable as the margin of error allows it to be, within the 95% reliability of all polls.
I was polled by WJLA a few weeks ago (I imagine my results were in the 2 Oct one referenced above). It was a recording that prompted numeric responses. Some may argue that this form of polling results in a lower response rate, but I'd argue back that polling is already suffering from a low response rate.

Early and Warner debate here in south central VA on Wed. night in Roanoke. They will be on WDBJ 7 (CBS) www.wdbj7.com). The first debate was only on that channel in this area and Earley wipeed the floor with Warner IMHO.
Doug Wilder did not let Warner get away with anything and that I believe, rattled Warner and threw him off his game.
If Earley performs the way he did in the last debate, and Warner comes across the robotic way he did last time, then it's Earley's race to lose in this area.

Good idea posting the new debate info here. Thanks much!

Usually weekend polls = depressed GOP numbers. This is GREAT news and makes me happy that I just mailed another $25 to the Earley campaign.

Mark (another one!) Weaver of WMAL reported it as news at the bottom of the hour on his news broadcast. So far, nothing on WJLA yet.
WJLA is available online with RealPlayer.
