TWO HELD IN LONDON TERROR RAIDS Two men have been arrested over alleged terrorism offences, police said. Officers detained the pair on suspicion of the "commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism" following raids in London on Tuesday, according to Scotland Yard. It is understood the allegations refer to offences being planned overseas. A Scotland Yard spokesman said the men, held under the Terrorism Act, were aged 25 and 39. "They were arrested at separate residential addresses in north-west London and west London," he added. "They were taken to a central London police station and are currently in custody."

Deep inside the heart of the "Green Zone", the heavily fortified administrative compound in Baghdad, lies one of the most carefully guarded secrets of the war in Iraq. It is a cell from a small and anonymous British Army unit that goes by the deliberately meaningless name of the Joint Support Group (JSG), and it has proved to be one of the Coalition's most effective and deadly weapons in the fight against terror. Its members - servicemen and women of all ranks recruited from all three of the Armed Forces - are trained to turn hardened terrorists into coalition spies...

The new leader of al-Qaida in Iraq said that more than 4,000 foreign insurgents have been killed in Iraq since the US-led invasion in 2003. The claim was made in an audiotape posted on the Internet. The man speaking on the tape identified himself as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir - also known as Abu Ayyub al-Masri - the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, although the voice could not be independently identified. The Arabic word he used indicated he was speaking about foreigners who joined the insurgency in Iraq, and not coalition troops. It was believed to be the first major statement...

A court on Thursday sentenced an Iraqi woman and six other people to death for their roles in the triple hotel bombings that killed 60 people in Jordan's capital last year. The 35-year-old woman, Sajida al-Rishawi, is the only defendant in custody. She confessed on Jordanian television shortly after the blasts that she intended to carry out a suicide attack on one of the Western hotels. Six others, including another Iraqi woman, were sentenced in absentia and remain at large. They are believed to be hiding in Iraq. The late al-Qaida in Iraq leader, Jordanian-born Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, had claimed...

Via ACLU Today, the Ohio Supreme Court ruled that attorneys seeking to represent indigent clients are no longer required to sign documents swearing that they are not terrorists and have no involvement with terrorist groups. The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio had challenged the provision, which is part of the Ohio Patriot Act, calling the requirement unnecessary red tape that will do nothing to prevent terrorism. “We are pleased the court recognized that attorneys should not be forced to sign these ineffective and offensive pledges,” said ACLU of Ohio Executive Director Christine Link. “The Ohio Patriot Act is an...

If we are to rise above endless conflict, the Muslim world must see America as something other than the Great Satan As if on cue Tuesday, four men attacked the U.S. embassy in Damascus, Syria, hours after President Bush reminded Americans in his sobering television address that we do have enemies. They are aggressive, committed people who hate the United States and are deadly in the pursuit of that hatred. Military and intelligence efforts by the United States and others have inflicted real harm on the terror networks sponsored by extremist Muslims. Troops and bombs have killed their leaders and...

KABUL, Afghanistan - The U.S. military said Wednesday it is looking into the unauthorized release of a photo purportedly taken by an American drone aircraft showing scores of Taliban militants at a funeral in Afghanistan. NBC-TV claimed that U.S. Army officers wanted to attack the ceremony with missiles carried by the Predator drone, but were prevented under rules of battlefield engagement that bar attacks on cemeteries. Lt. Tamara Lawrence, a spokeswoman with the U.S. military in Kabul, said the photograph was released to the network by someone who did not have the clearance to hand it out. "It is an...

The "War on Islamofascism" is replacing the "War on Global Terror" as the favorite Bush administration buzz slogan. It is a good slogan because it appeals to the "nuke 'em" segment of the population as an election approaches and because it means nothing at all. The very word "war" has been misused so often that it has lost all its meaning -- the war on drunk driving, the war on drugs, the war on obesity, the war on pornography, the war on calories, the war on autism, the war on gay marriages, the war, as I saw in a newspaper...

Since most celebs tend to the liberal side of the political spectrum, it is a pleasant surprise when 84 Hollywood actors, directors, and producers joined Nicole Kidman in taking out a Los Angeles Times ad (above) condemning the terrorist activities by Hezbollah and Hamas in Lebanon and Israel. Particularly painful for the DUmmies must have been the tail end of the ad which said, "We need to support democratic societies and stop terrorsism at all costs." As you can guess this ad was like waving a red cape in front of an angry DUmmie bull as you can see...

Al Qaeda wants to build a political operation in Iraq to broaden its campaign against the U.S.-backed government, a top U.S. general said on Wednesday. Citing intelligence mostly gathered since the death of al Qaeda's former leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in June, Major General William Caldwell said the militant group appeared to be refining its approach beyond bombings and beheadings. "Al Qaeda in Iraq wants to present itself as a legitimate organization and is striving to increase its operational power by building a political base with a military wing," Caldwell told a news briefing. He did not give specific examples....

FIVE weeks have passed since the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers provoked Israel to launch its most unsatisfactory military operation in 58 years. What problem has been solved, or even ameliorated? Hezbollah, often using World War II-vintage rockets, has demonstrated the inadequacy of Israel's policy of unilateral disengagement - from Lebanon, Gaza, much of the West Bank - behind a fence. Hezbollah has willingly suffered (temporary) military diminution in exchange for enormous political enlargement. Hitherto, Hezbollah in Lebanon was a "state within a state." Henceforth, the Lebanese state may be an appendage of Hezbollah. Hezbollah is an army that, having...

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Dissatisfied with Prime Minister Tony Blair's response to Britain's increased terror alert, a newspaper decided his vacation attire should speak for him. The Australian paper The Age reported that the prime minister's eye-catching shorts were the featured headline of Britain's The Mail on Sunday, a move that indicates a growing public dissatisfaction with Blair's decision to remain on vacation in Barbados during a national crisis. "Bold and Defiant. Well, the trunks are," read the paper's Sunday headline. "This was the prime minister yesterday, sunning himself in his lurid swimwear on board the catamaran Good...

The story of the American hostages who spent 444 days in Iran is now more than a quarter century old and rarely told in the detail that it deserves. I should know. I was one of them. Because the 52 of us who suffered the ordeal now number only 42, I was excited to read Mark Bowden’s latest book, “Guests of the Ayatollah.” With many of us approaching our 60s, 70s and beyond, I had begun to believe the story would never be completely and properly told. Most Americans believe the beginning of modern terrorism against the United States began...

I am looking for assessments of possible terrorist threats to the US that have been made in the past year. I work in preparedness efforts and need something that will motivate others I will be presenting to. The focus needs to be on biological threats but can include chemical and nuclear -- especially if they are in reference to public health impacts. This is a real opportunity to help prepare for possible acts of terrorism.
