There was some amusement as well as surprise when somebody walked into Helsinki’s Oodi Central Library on Monday 27 with a book that was overdue. 84 years overdue It’s not unusual to be a little delayed in returning a library book but this one was unusual in as much as it was due back on December 26, 1939 making it just over 84 years late! The person who returned it isn’t the person who first took out the book The Refugees (Pakolaiset in Finnish) by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and it is not known whether there was a fine and...

Otter 841 is known as the elusive-surfboard stealing otter and she’s back to her old tricks, making her latest appearance in Santa Cruz, California during a surf contest Saturday. According to The Mercury News, Otter 841 is notorious among surfers after last summer’s wave-riding rampage, going after surfers and biting their surf boards. Surfer Karl Anderle says he was sitting on his board at the surfing contest as a volunteer, keeping non-competitors out of the competition zone. He says he tipped his board up, hoping she would hop off, but she scooted up and clung on so he decided he...

They'll probably look more impressive when they're clean. Image credit: ARCHEOLOGICKÝ ÚSTAV AV ČR ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you’ve been trying to convince yourself to exercise more lately, consider the recent case of a woman in the Czech Republic who went out for a walk one day and accidentally found a treasure trove of more than 2,150 silver coins dating from more than 900 years ago. On September 7, 1936, the last known thylacine, often referred to as the Tasmanian tiger, is believed to have died in captivity in Hobart, Tasmania. Since then, the species, long presumed extinct, has taken on a near-mythical status. The thylacine still captures the public’s imagination, having earned its place as a modern symbol of both loss, and also possibilities. The creature’s unmistakable striped appearance has also helped propel it to its current position as a pop cultural icon and a constant reminder of humanity’s more destructive side. Yet what is perhaps the most intriguing about the thylacine is that, for...

Authorities in Texas are investigating after human remains were found in the jaws of an alligator while officers were searching the area for a missing woman. The gruesome discovery in Houston comes less than a year after the body of a woman was found in the mouth of a gator in Florida. "Patrol officers located the remains of a woman in the jaws of an alligator in the Horsepen Bayou … while searching the area for a woman reported missing," Houston police said in a statement Wednesday. A sergeant shot and killed the alligator "to prevent it from doing more...

A woman was shocked to discover that the sick dog she took to be euthanized was back at the shelter and up for adoption a year later. Kristie Pereira, 32, was heartbroken when she was told that the most humane thing she could do for her beloved pet Beau was to put him down. The digital marketer said she paid $450 to adopt her pup from the Lost Dog & Cat Rescue Foundation in 2022 while working from home in Maryland. The dog’s veterinarian, the clinic’s lead doctor and an animal emergency room vet eventually all agreed that the poop...

Yesterday I had my first encounter with what is called an "Inclusive" Men's Restroom. What happened is that I went to an auditorium at the University of Miami where my nephew had his high school graduation ceremony. After a couple of hours, the ceremony concluded and we all exited.Of course, sitting there for a couple of hours, I had a nature call to take care of and looked for a restroom in that building just outside of the auditorium. Well, I soon found what was labeled on the door as an "INCLUSIVE" Men's Restroom. Even though nature was strongly calling...

Queer Ghost Hunters (Stu Maddux, 2016-) in an independently-produced YouTube web series in which queer paranormal investigators set out to contact queer ghosts of the past. The show stages an intervention within the paranormal reality television genre, critiquing the lack of queer content in popular shows such as Ghost Hunters. Despite the routine investigations of prisons and mental asylums, sites that have historically functioned to oppress queer people, queer ghosts are not sought after in mainstream paranormal reality TV, thereby rendering queer history and injustice invisible. Queer Ghost Hunters aims to rectify this invisibility by attempting to contact queer ghosts...

With this airline, dogs are ditching the kennels and flying first class. BARK Air wants to pamper pets and their owners even before takeoff and will make its initial flight from New York to Los Angeles on Thursday (May 23). CEO Matt Meeker said the business idea came from struggling to transport Hugo, his Great Dane. "I was unable to travel with him long distances and had the idea that there should be an airline that caters to dogs," said Meeker, who also founded BarkBox, a subscription service for dog products owned by Bark Inc. "We cater everything to the...

The Left’s march through Western institutions in the forms of DEI/CRT, “social justice”, and all manner of woo-woo wokeism has consequences. Let’s take schools of medicine for $200, Alex. Whistleblowers say affirmative action, illegal in California since 1996, is to blame. ... “One professor said that a student in the operating room could not identify a major artery when asked, then berated the professor for putting her on the spot. Another said...

I'm deeply involved in AI in my current company. While it is not my described role, I feel it is stupid to wait to be assigned a task. I feel it is best to see an opportunity, and seize it. Therefore, I am now my division's AI Advocate. I recently put together a use-case, ensured it worked, and made it available to the company. During a town hall, I continuously mentioned the use case (in the chat) and got well over 25 requests for more information. The use-case is how to record a Zoom meeting, how to create a transcript...

NEW YORK, NY — In what analysts have labeled a shocking turn of events, a district attorney whose career had been funded by global powerbroker George Soros declined to prosecute a group of violent university campus protesters who had also been funded by global powerbroker George Soros. The surprising development came unexpectedly following college campus protests in various places across the country, with district attorneys strangely choosing to not prosecute lawbreakers who had been financed by the same person who had put the district attorneys themselves in office. "I have chosen to not pursue charges," said New York District Attorney...
