GOVERNOR RILEY ENDORSED BY SENATOR HARRI ANNE SMITH
Montgomery - Citing his conservative record of reforming government, improving the state's economy and his plan to cut income taxes, State Senator Harri Anne Smith (R-Slocomb) endorsed Governor Bob Riley's bid for re-election at a news conference in Montgomery this morning. "I've made no secret of the fact that I was considering running for governor myself this year. Yet as I traveled the state and spoke with citizens, I found myself agreeing with what they were telling me: Governor Riley is a good man doing a great job and he deserves a second term. Alabama is finally on the right track, and re-electing Bob Riley is the best thing we can do to keep moving Alabama forward," Senator Smith said. "Under his leadership, a record budget deficit that he inherited three years ago has been turned into a record surplus. Alabama's unemployment rate is at its lowest level in the state's history, and Governor Riley's plan to cut taxes will help sustain our economy's growth. I urge conservatives across the state to join me in supporting Governor Riley's re-election," Senator Smith added. Senator Smith is widely recognized as one of the Alabama Legislature's most conservative members. According to an Associated Press report in August 2005, she was ranked as the most conservative member of the Senate based on a legislative voting guide put together by former state Republican Party Chairman Elbert Peters of Huntsville. Governor Riley said he's grateful to receive Senator Smith's endorsement. "Harri Anne Smith is a conservative leader in the Senate, she's an outstanding senator who is dedicated to serving her constituents, and I am honored to receive her support," Governor Riley said at the news conference held at the Riley campaign headquarters. "She has chosen to seek re-election to the Senate and I'm very pleased to offer Senator Smith my full endorsement of her campaign. The people of the Wiregrass need to make sure they keep her in the Senate for another four years." Senator Smith, a native of Slocomb, began her public service career as a member of the Slocomb City Council in 1989. She was elected the town's mayor in 1996 and then elected to the State Senate in 1998. She is currently serving her second term in the Senate.

Because of the leadership outgoing chair Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh has provided us, we are more primed than ever to make a profound impact on our counties, our state and our country. I want to personally thank Twinkle on behalf of the party for her solid leadership throughout her term. Twinkle is truly a blessing to this Party.
2008 promises to be an exciting election year for Alabama Republicans as well, because, for the first time in decades, our state will be a real player in the presidential primary process. We are no longer just an afterthought. If you are going to want to be the leader of the free world, you have to come through Alabama.
And that’s much more than just a feather in our hat, it’s good for the country as well. Every Republican candidate will be weighed and tested with our conservative Alabama values—and the winner of our primary, the person who looks the most like an Alabamian, will be well on his or her way to victory in November.
Not only will our Republican candidates continue visiting our state as the primary approaches, Democrats such as Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Joe Biden and other liberals will be coming to Alabama, as well. . .and that also helps us Republicans.
Many people around the state believe that our tough job ended in November, but another campaign awaits us—Campaign 2010, our consolidated push to continue building a Republican majority. Campaign 2010 will focus on one goal—assembling one of the best grassroots structures in the country. You will be hearing and reading more about Campaign 2010 in the coming weeks.
We, as a Party, should not only be participants in the debate, we should drive the debate by being participants in the process.
Once the Party - from the Steering Committee to the dedicated activists to the selfless volunteers who dedicate an hour of their week in service - comes together under this common goal, we will change the face of this state and nation forever.
