Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting
NICKEL MINES, Pa. At least two female students and one slightly older female who may have been a teacher's aide were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.
State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.
"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.
Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.
"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.
After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims some critically wounded were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.
I guess you can. This gives me the chills.
I think people question whether your intention was to "provide an outlet", or just to be mean.
It is a little much at a time like this.
You mean its not an anti - gun conspiracy timed for the elections?
Does that mean I can take off my aluminium foil hat now?
You're not supposed to confuse people with facts like that. Shame on you.
"The Amish may have just learned of a flaw with their belief about the evils of guns and violence."
I think the Amish will continue to believe that guns and violence are evil.
Good thing we have so much garbage in this country to fill the need.
Prayers for the children and their families. I can't type what I want to say about the shooter.
MSNBC reporting 3 pediatric patients, 1 in critical condition at one local hospital.
Are you kidding?
Fox is very bad at handling events such as this one. They have Bill Himmer on now and he is positively one of the worst news people in the industry.
This an admission of guilt. I am watching the coverage on CNN and it has much less speculation than does Himmer on Fox News.
All I can say is that the Amish I know are the finest, kindest, humble, honest, and caring people that I have ever met.
My prayers for them.
Lancaster General Hospital officials have called in all available personnel and were told to be prepared for a large number of patients, WGAL reported.
John Lines of Lancaster General Hospital said so far they have received three "pediatric" patients. He did not say what their injuries were.
WGAL-TV reported that the incident does not involve the Faith Mennonite School or Bart-Colerain Elementary, which are near the scene.
Who goes into an elementary school and shoots it up? what a sick bastard.
Looks like about 25% of the total student body was wiped out.
It is hard not to think of the two news stories last week of school shootings not triggering insanity on someone else's part to do likewise.
More likely that idiot Olbermann will have a "special comment" and argue that this was a Republic orchestrated event to take the attention away from Foley.
My deepest sympathies and prayers to the families. How can anyone willfully and intentionally shoot children?
Duh...MUSLIMS and crazy people, but I repeat myself!
'Man' named 'Roy' entered school house, started making threats. Locals found out and tried to negotiate. Then 10 shots were heard inside the school, and the hostage taker took his own life.
[It is seeming to parallel the CO incident of last week. The Perp may have had no connection to the community.]
Everytime I used pass through Thomasville, headed west on Rt30, I saw a sign for 'Paradise'... what was I seeing? I can't find any mention of it now in the York Cty towns.
I must be hallucinating! Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Someone at DU already suggested just such a thing. The liberal mind is one scary place.
God help these little ones - who would shoot little children? What sort of monster would kill little children in a school??
Fox News online says news conference scheduled for about 1pm
also reporting about 12 injured (in addition to those killed).
MSNBC: 5 or more fatilities. 1 critical in airflight.
The shooter has NOT been identified as Amish - jeez
Patients so far range in age from 6 to 15 years old.
I am putting money on it that the perp has some kind of a record. That seems to be the norm these days. The justice system simply doesn't work, and guys like this are roaming the streets unchecked.
You've got to be kidding me. Somehow you are going to blame the Amish way of life for this?
I'm sorry - you're right - I'm just thinking - because it never makes sense no matter no matter what.
Your kidding me?!! I guess it would too much to expect them to think about those kids first.
That looks like a portrait. Beautiful place.
The Amish give me the creeps, but have they determined that the shooter was a student?
Please - I never said that - calm down. I am trying to understand a motive.
Thomasville...they have a small private air strip and an A.S.P.C.A....That's about it ;)
Some of the Amish in our area (northeastern Indiana) are very closed off from "english" people. But some are very friendly and open. Many more of the former, though.
It's LAN-ki-stir, not LAN-CAS-ter. Even I know that!
BTW The women put out a feast that would marvel any professional caterer!
I dont think, IMHO, that he is trying to say "the Amish got what was coming to them" because they are pacifist, I think what he was trying to say is that since they are idological pacifists that that is the reason the negotiations failed and there is a higher death toll....or maybe I just had too much coffee today....or like you just trying to figure out what the hell happened and why...sigh...
This is unusual for the Amish community.
