Update: Multiple Shooting Victims and Possible Hostages in Lancaster County

Not many details available yet, but an incident has been reported from Mine Rd. in Bart Township in Lancaster County involving multiple gunshot victims. Dennis Buterbaugh reports live from our newsroom. abc27 has a news crew on the way. We will update with details as they become available.

Update 2: Pennsylvania Police: Amish School is 'Horrendous Crime Scene' After Shooting

NICKEL MINES, Pa. — At least two female students and one slightly older female — who may have been a teacher's aide — were shot and killed execution style in what police say may be a revenge killing for something that happened 20 years ago.

State Police Commissioner Jeffrey Miller said Monday that truck driver Charles Carl Roberts IV entered the one-room Amish schoolhouse in earlier in the day. The gunman brought in pieces of wood to board up the doors to the building when he entered the school. He also stacked desks against the building's doors.

"It appears that the suspect entered school with the intention of taking hostages," Miller said.

Roberts had wire ties and plastic flex cuff, which he used to begin tying the hostages feet together after they were lined up along a blackboard. He let go 15 male students, as well as one adult female who was pregnant. Three other non-student females with infants were also allowed to leave. One shotgun and one handgun was found next to the suspect when police entered the building.

"It seems as though he wanted to attack young, female victims," Miller said.

After a half hour inside, Roberts began shooting. When the gunfire stopped, three females were found shot dead at the scene, along with the suspect, who shot himself, Miller said. At least seven more victims — some critically wounded — were transported to nearby hospitals, he said. One victim, a young girl, died in the arms of a trooper, Miller said. He could not confirm how many people died en route or at the hospital. The county coroner earlier reported six children killed but then backed off of that statement.

What could posess a person to take their frustrations out on innocent kids?

How many parents have harmed their own children to get back at a spouse.

I really think there are people who are born w/ no souls.

Actually the Amish moving en masse to a community ends up being a financial windfall for that community - they pay their taxes

I have always understood the Amish pay little to no taxes. Everything in an Amish community is owned by the church. Least that's the way it around here.

If they know him by his first name, sounds like he's one of them.

I don't know why they feel their children don't need an education past the 8th grade? I can only speculate..

From what I have heard, an Amish 8th Grade education is far superior to a high-school education elsewhere in this country.

The kids also learn to work hadrd at an early age. They are also given a chance to live a material, modern life for a few years - and then they choose whether to become full members of their order.

Are there problems with the Amish? Yes, they have a big problem with genetic diseases from inbreeding among local populations. But they also make far more money from an acre of farmland than farmers using modern methods, and the kids always seem happier than the local kids moping around subdivisions.

A little early for speculating on links to islamists, but I'm sure they're taking notes on all these incidents.

Wish the Fox News guy would quit repeatedly mispronouncing Lancaster.

I know. They pronounce it Laaaaann-caster. Then again, the Brits laugh at us when we pronounce their "shires" or "hams."

Just heard on Fox that there is a shooter they are looking for near a school in Las Vegas. This a coincidence or are schools being targeted now?

I can not imagine anyone targeting the Amish.

The Islamo-fascists would do so in a heart beat.

Who's going to discipline them?

I would venture there are as many Penn Townships in Pennsylvania as there are counties.

This actually happened in Bart Township SE of Strasburg, PA.

I grew up in Ohio around a similar sect as the Amish -- the Dunkard Brethren. They had a horse and buggy church and a car church but one thing they had in common was the latest farm equipment. The horse and buggy church kids used to go on dates on the modern tractor into town. They always referred to themselves as the car church and horse and buggy church and I don't know the real name of either church to this day.

They dressed the same as the Amish so I don't know the difference except they were pacifist and wouldn't lift a firearm to protect their own but would go hunting.
