I think she started to like him when he saved Snape from Lupin. ANd Snape then began to really hate James because not only did he save his life but also because he knew Lily had changed toward James. That’s just my thought on that. :)

Wait, you got me confused... when did James save Snape from Lupin? The only attack I ever remember is when James attacked Snape (hanging him upside down) and Lily interferred and he called her a "Mudblood" and said he didn't need her help?

Did I miss something? (Could have at the rate I blast through the books on my first reading.) ;D

Well Snape and Phineas helped and they were both Slytherins.

Don’t forget that Phineas led Snape to Harry and Hermione so he could leave the sword. He figured out where they were in the forest from his picture. I think that i s what he is talking about.

It happened very suddenly. The hook-nosed teacher looked past Quirrell's turban straight into Harry's eyes -- and a sharp, hot pain shot across the scar on Harry's forehead.

I just finished re-reading that as well. When I got to that part this time, I thought that maybe the scar didn't hurt because of Snape, but because of the proximity to Quirrell and Voldy. But that Harry would think it was Snape.

I’m curious to know if Snape was an unregistered Animagus or did Hermione just not spill the beans.

Did we ever see him change before the last book?

In OOtP it tells of a time where Sirius discovers that Snape is following them at night to find out where they go(the Marauders). Sirius tells Snape how to calm the whomping willow to get in the shrieking shack knowing that Lupin is in the form of a werewolf and will kill him. James finds out Sirius had done this and stops Snape just before he goes in. They imply that this incident brings them before Dumbledore because now Snape knows that Lupin is a werewolf. Anyway I believe Snape told Lily thinking she would be repulsed but instead she sees that James wasn’t as bad as she thought. JMO

Excellent points all over the place! I hadn’t noticed the part about the potion in the basin. I found those scenes really icky, because of the Inferi, so I raced through them.

It DOES make a nice escape from the real world. If I could only write ONE novel with the popularity that JKR enjoyed (sigh).

Your insight about the family theme is “spot on” IMO. You have functional and disfunctional families throughout the whole series... I wonder if thats unconsciously why so many kids like HP, with a divorce rate around 50% in real life, its almost like having your parents die and being on your own like Harry. (Voice of experience here).

And who knows, maybe Malfoy IS married to a mudblood... after all, the pure bloods could only intermarry so far and alot were already cousins as it is.

The nicest thing about these books and the internet is it gives people yet another way of talking to others and discussing ideas... be they good, bad, or ugly... The thing I would emphasize the most with you is to form your own opinion and keep an open mind.

And remember ITS JUST A STORY!

Some folks forget that.

Forget reading critics reviews of the books and movies IMO. I’ve started to think that critics take the opposite approach from the masses just to get noticed. I laugh with my husband all the time that if the critics hate a movie, we’re sure to like it and if they like a movie, we’ll find it a “yawn-fest”.

With the Potter books you have :
a) Adult fans
b) Adult fans with kids READING the books too (my 15 year old son just finished the book the other morning at 2:30 am - so he read it in a 36 hour time frame..He’s only done that with the HP books.)
c) Kid fans
d) Critics trying to make a name for themselves
e) Religious frootloops whining about witchcraft (I turned my annoying neighbor into a newt...but she got better...)
f) Adults and kids just not interested - which is FINE and OK

Between you and me, there are a LOAD of women I’ve come across working on “writing a children’s book”... so when I read a very harsh critique of ANY popular book (not only childrens), I think “sour grapes”.

OMG! How did I miss that? Definitely going to reread OOTP and HBP after I re-read DH... (that should keep me tied up for a week or so)

My 2c re Aurors/Magical LE...I think the Aurors are supposed to be the elite fighting force within the magical community and Ministry, devoted solely to catching dark wizards. There are a lot of other employees within MLE who aren't Aurors--Arthur Weasley, for instance.

The Department, to me, sounds like a cross between a regular municipal LE department, the Department of Justice, and the legislature. They are allowed to write laws, after all, as well as enforce them.

Yes, I think the definite implication there is that Quirrel’s back being toward Harry, Voldemort is looking straight at him...

That stinks. Maybe that's one of the things Harry is supposed to have "reformed" in his adult career!

Yes, that's the way I understood it as well. Snape was talking to Quirrell, and when Snape shifted his attention to Harry I can imagine Voldy/Quirrell shifting his attention as well to see what Snape was looking at, and causing Harry's scar to hurt. Harry though would have only seen Snape looking at him, associating the pain with him and causing him to mistrust Snape from the beginning.

On page 747 we read, “...and Phineas Nigellus called, in his high reedy voice, ‘And let it be noted that Slytherin House played its part! Let our contribution not be forgotten!’” But I’ll be doggone if I know what he’s talking about!

Slughorn was fighting in his pajamas, for one thing -- he came puffing up the stairs on Charlie Weasley's heels. He probably had a few Slytherins who decided to stay with him.

I took it to mean Snape’s role - he was a Slytherin.

I didn’t keep exact count — I thought the stupid quiz would do that. I think I got 46.
