Mexican Consulate Opens In Downtown Indianapolis. (Shop after shop, sign after sign in Spanish)
WISHTV 8 ^ | 11-2-02

The Mexican Consulate in Indianapolis will be open for business Monday. It's an office that will serve a group of people that's growing rapidly in our city and state. Mayor Bart Peterson's office has worked for about two years with the Mexican government and the state of Indiana to get this consulate opened.

You don't have to look hard to see why the consulate is needed. Drive down Washington Street a few miles west of downtown, and you'll see the fruits of our Hispanic and Latino community's labor. Shop after shop, sign after sign in Spanish. There are now some 34,000 Latinos and Hispanics in Indianapolis, and 60% of them are Mexican.

"We have an education system that welcomes the immigrants and we like the way we are treated because we find that the American community is welcoming in general," said Roberto Curci, La Guia Magazine.

The city even has two publications geared toward this growing community. "The Voice of Indiana," a bilingual newspaper and "The Guide of Indianapolis," a magazine for Hispanics and Latinos. There's even a new Hispanic and Latino yellow pages.

Local businesses are forging ties with that community. Kroger just donated a van to the Hispanic Center of Indianapolis to thank them for translation help that the center has provided for the grocery chain.

"As we change and we are changing as a city, I think it was important for business to recognize that and we have recognized it," said Jeff Golc, Kroger.

The change will continue. Just ask the woman who helps run the grocery store on West Washington Street. New Hispanic and Latino customers come in for her authentic products all the time.

"Like once in a while there will be somebody new that comes. You know, like, "Oh, we just moved here and we came to see how it is." So yeah, we always get new people that come here," said Irasema Delgado, store manager.

The Mexican Consulate will serve three states: Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. It will serve as the Mexican government's primary link with those states on issues such as immigration, trade and economic development.

"Shop after shop, sign after sign in Spanish." (WISH-TV8)

This is what illegal immigration is all about - colonization. These people are not here to become Americans - and as such cannot be analogized to any prior group of immigrants to the U.S. They live in the U.S. only physically; psychologically, they still live in Mexico - watching Mexican TV on satellite, watching Mexican soccer leagues rather than the NFL dubbed in Spanish, watching videocassette Mexican movies instead of ours dubbed in Spanish.

Get the sticker!

I am eating some delicious tortilla chips I just bought at a Mexican grocery store on East New York Street in Indianapolis. I like most of the Mexican grocery stores I've been in. The one at Sherman and Washington is just as cheap as the Marsh next door and has a good selection. I'm not the only non-Mexican who shops there. The last time I shopped there, the checkout clerk was a black girl. I would rather see a thriving business than another closed-up store on Indy's east side.

You bet, and many that have cable television are paying to have about 15 percent of their channels in Spanish Korean etc.

When you call the TV cable people and ask them *why* you are paying for stations in foreign languages, they will tell you, "we are trying to appeal to everyone". But we do get a kick out of some of the stations where they are constantly shooting and killing each other every 5 or 6 seconds. Some of them appear as comedies, but sadly they are not.

Speaking of how immigrants can take over a place, German used to be "the" legal language in Indiana. Indianapolis had once had it's own "dialect" - See James Whitcomb Riley - but it was routed by the rough speech of the Deutschlanders. They rolled through the area at Warp Speed, took over every American business, ran all the American newspapers out of town, even demanded that elections be done "their way"!.

When my Grandparents were still kids, if you had to go to a court in most parts of the state and you spoke only English, you'd need an interpreter.

WWI and WWII devastated the German community and they became fully assimilated. Today people like Senator Lugar are well respected and they use English quite well, all things considered. He's a real credit to his race, eh?

Now, these Hispanics? Would it help if we conducted a war against Mexico or something? Certainly they are at least as smart as the Germans were and they'd get going on that assimilation part right quick. Maybe just a small war - that'd do it - run a couple of humvees over to Juarez and demand their surrender.

Give me tortilla chips or give me death! :->

I realize after I posted that how it sounded. I am concerned about illegal immigration, too. But someone running a legit business like a grocery store, I don't have a problem with. I assume they're paying property taxes, etc.

I worked for many years in Mexico, and they are wonderful people. They are caring, religious, and peaceful. But if I wanted to buy property there, I must be prepared for all kinds of hoops, and A LEASE (not purchase). These folks (if they are here illegally) are draining our taxpayer dollars to the max. Why cannot I move to Mexico and get the perks they receive from us? (And I would be a legal alien). It boggles the mind.

Yes, it seems incrementally, one town at a time. I know of other towns where everthing, all the signs are in Chinese.....I mean everything.....And I am not talking about $50. signs. I am talking big commercial signs that cost $100,000 and where the people are living in $900,000 homes.

Interesting, aint it?

"Would it help if we conducted a war against Mexico or something?"

It would help if we at least had as much of a BORDER with Mexico as I do with my friendly neighbor!

Why is it so much easier to illegally enter the U.S. from Mexico than to illegally enter my backyard - over a 5' chain-link fence all the way around, with anticlimbing slats, plus unpredictable dog-run times - from my neighbors'?

I am a strong believer in requiring all imigrants to learn English, but the Mexicans are hardly the first to retain their native language as long as possible.

There was a lot of German settlement in central Texas in the 1840s, when Texas was an independant Republic. As late as the 1960s, after 120 years, most of the older generation could not speak English.
The Cajuns in South Louisiana spoke "Cajun French" for 200 years, until forced to learn English after WW II.

The point is that no group has willingly given up their native language. They have all been coerced into speaking English and we are gonna have to wake up and coerce Hispanic immigrants to do the same.

Truth is-I don't believe the census map. Not from where I sit. Our banks here in Indianapolis all have ATM's that start with english or spanish? All of the phone directions offer spanish or english? The consulate that has opened late, opened late because it was built to service 150,000 and during construction that was revised to service 250,000.

Our neighbors are from Venezuela, with family living in Cincy, Indianapolis, Florida and the their mom rotates living with each-as well as her sister. They are GREAT PEOPLE. Two have become citizens.

Problem is-immigration should follow up with classes in citizenship (very important) and the important fact that english is our language, our bond, and just as legal immigrants from years past learned english, so should they. The coddling-just like bilingual teaching in elmemtary schools flopped-making second class citizens out of millions of children-so will a cultural coddling cause a slow, if ever, true blending of these people into our society. Not to mention the unfair tax burden on all tax payers, immigrants included, of this trend to offer everything in the language of the immigrant.

We have truckloads of mexican workers at most village pantrys-like 7/11's, waiting for work opportunity in the mornings.

Well, you often tell me that I don't know what I'm talking about in regards to illegal immigration, and since this is my home town described in this article I can perhaps explain a few things.

The near west side (and the near east side, which also has a fair number of Hispanics) were run-down, dangerous neighborhoods. The Hispanics have fixed up the property and are improving the areas. The groceries serve the immigrant workers like those who work with my son, who are LEGAL and go home for two-three months each winter.

The policy of the city is to welcome LEGAL immigrants, and I can assure you that someone running a grocery store is a legal immigrant.

My mother lives in Shelbyville, just a little ways south of you.

I took a couple of days off business a few weeks back and visited. Going back with the rental car I drove around Indy a while. About 10 years ago I spent the day in downtown Indy and was really pleased with what's happened there. What I saw on the west side was impressive in it's own right. Oddly enough, their English is easier to understand then what used to be spoken in those areas.

There are a lot of neighborhoods in many cities I visit that sure could use this kind of community activism.

Not to mention that this map only shows those here legally that weren't afraid to report to the census!!! Here in California they are taking over everything. Anyone who has to live in affordable housing would have to live with the graffiti and the gangs and the crime. Everything you get in the mail is written more in Spanish than English.

Their plan to take over the Southwest looks like it's well underway.

I will say I am a true Republican and love President Bush. BUT, if they don't do something about the border and the illegal one's already here, I'm willing to switch to the other party or to someone who will get the job done. If no one wants to do it I will NOT vote for any of them. I will just have to get out of here and head for a state that has no red or pink on the map and hope it stays that way.

I take phone calls from all over the country as part of my job, and I hear many people that cannot speak English (very infuriating) yet they have American Express cards. I won a small victory for REAL Americans when I took a call from a man that could barely speak enough English to ask if anyone spoke Spanish......I said, in a very confused tone, "Why would we have anyone that speaks Spanish?"

Heh heh.

My nephew teaches in Shelbyville. Small world, isn't it?

Thanks for corroborating my story. You are quite right.

A couple of years ago I had a part-time evening job which required me to cut through neighborhoods on the near East Side. Quite a difference in the comfort level I felt, since the streets in warm weather were full of families, young couples, people working on their cars, etc. Those neighborhoods used to be full of drug dealers.

Well, they HAVE improved the community, and I don't care much what anyone says. They don't live here; I do.

"The point is that no group has willingly given up their native language. They have all been coerced into speaking English and we are gonna have to wake up and coerce Hispanic immigrants to do the same."

The difference is that there's never in U.S. history been a large-population immigrant group, with heavy daily influx from an adjoining non-English-speaking homeland, colonizing a huge contiguous region of the U.S.

That's why reconquista cannot be in any way analogized to Poles in Detroit, Jews in NYC, or even Little Havana in Miami.

In Indiana, in order to run a grocery store one must file for a retail merchant's certificate. If one is not a citizen one must provide evidence of legal immigrant status. Period.

I know this because I myself have a retail merchant's certificate. Of course, one is free to ignore my comment on this and check it out at the Indiana Secretary of State's office.

AND, one may also ignore people like you, who never offer any sort of discussion except an attempt to bully, mock, and intimidate people.

Hahahahah.......LOL! If you only knew. Let me tell you, in a city like Los Angeles for instance, the fraud committed by illegal aliens, Chinese, Mexicans, from Viet Nam etc etc, is so out of control and complicated its unreal. Not only that, our elected officials, once they are made aware of the massive fraud, are very hesitant to do a damn thing about it. It is so bad, and so wide spread, it's almost beyond control.

Well, aren't you the lucky one. You got all of the good criminals. Why don't you come down to Hall County, Ga.

If you do we can go down to Atlanta Hwy. in Gainesville and I can get you any type of papers you want. You need SS card? Got it. You need to be a citizen? I'm sure if we look really hard we can find that too. I can proably get you a retail merchant's certificate, for Indiana. And you will feel right at home on Atlanta Hwy. Nothing but Spanish stores and spanish signs. Of course, we have over a 100 gangs here too. A huge drug problem just up the road in Dalton with the Cartels. Men standing at the local stores yelling obscenities at women. Or how about just relieving themselves where ever. Schools overloaded. Welfare offices completely full but none of them speak English. Hospitals going broke.

Yes , you are mighty lucky that all the good illegals came to your town. Maybe we should share some of ours with you and you might not be as happy. Ya think?
