About a month ago, ex-addict Penny Wood avoided a prison term by agreeing to let authorities use these before-and-after photos of her to steer people away from the ravages of methamphetamine use. Now, she regrets the deal, saying the fliers have become an embarrassment for her, her children and grandchildren. (AP Photo/Pekin Times, Tazwell County State's Attorney)

I live in the California's Central Valley which is known as the Meth Capital of The World. Seeing strung out junkies selling themselves to feed their habit, camping out in parks and wandering the streets, talking to themselves is a very common sight in my neck of the woods.

Heck, makeup does wonders! These photos could almost be labeled 9:00pm and 6:00am. Bachelors beware!

I'm confused. I thought meth was illegal nationwide.

It is illegal, but we have a lot of meth heads Central California. Law enforcement is doing all they can, but it apparently is not enough. Besides methlabs in garages we also have a problem with "Beavis and Butthead Operations" these are small, portable meth lab kits that manufacturers set up in hotel rooms.

The meth recipe was developed by the Nazi's, (I believe), which means it's been around for a very long time. Weren't "mothers little helpers", dexies, black beauties, etc. prescribed by doctors? My Aunt used to get a prescription once a month for the stuff.

The doctor always gave her a physical and kept close watch on her, I suppose, (she never looked like the photo's posted or got busted for anything, she was middle/upper class, rather snooty),that all changed in 1973-74 when the Fed's restricted the usage of this class of drug.

She retired about then and never used that class of drugs again. Perhaps this class of drugs should be returned to the doctors discretion as to how they are prescribed. I don't see the WOD reducing the problem.

Hotel rooms? That seems like it would be a very unsafe place to have all those chemicals and such! What would prompt them to use hotel rooms?

Is meth easily obtainable there? Can anyone just go out and buy it?

From what I've read about the poison, it makes you fearless. Looks like it gives the user a death wish too.

Yea, it's a good thing the drug laws are protecting the millions of addicts in the US from being addicts. Or something.

Did you catch this under the first set of pictures?

About a month ago, ex-addict Penny Wood avoided a prison term by agreeing to let authorities use these before-and-after photos of her to steer people away from the ravages of methamphetamine use.

Yep, drug users are so dangerous that they have to go to jail...... unless they let the State take a picture of them.

This just goes to show the hypocrisy of laws concerning non-violent behaviors such as "vices" and the purpose of laws in general. A law is supposedly made to inprison someone for some horrible deed, a violation of the rights of another. This person is deemed dangerous and must be kept away from society to protect the rights of others. But, with a stroke of the pen, one person, supposedly deemed dangerous due to the activity they have engaged in, is set free for letting the State take a picture of her, while tens of thousands of others are in prison for similar crimes. It just warms one's heart, doesn't it.

Self-victimization is none of the government's business.

That's not a real extreme case either. More typical.
I know people like this.

I've spoken before of the girls my wife and I are raising. Their mother, a woman we have known for a very long time, could be the woman in those pictures. Sad, but true.

But the WOD isn't doing anything meaningful about it.

Yeah victimless crime Rights-violating acts like vehicular homicide and rape are also committed under the influence of alcohol---but while the rights-violating acts are and will remain illegal, this is not a sufficient argument for banning alcohol and is therefore nto a sufficient argument for keeping other drugs banned.

They also use Uhauls, travel around and then abandon them. They look for deserted barns, and farmhouses. Also you have to be careful who you rent a house to-- I read horror stories about the cleanup the owner is responsible for. Coming soon to a place near you. Also known to cause schizophrenia.
