Hello. I am a college student that has gotten interested in politics within the last few years. I come from a long line of independants who raised me to vote for whom I agree with the most, not based on party affiliation.
Last night, I attended a performance of Margaret Cho in Indianapolis. One of the last things she mentioned was all of the hatemail she recieved from members of Free Republic. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Surely this has to be a joke. So when I got home, I read the hatemail on her website. Then I logged onto this site and read some more. It wasn't a joke.
Call me naive, but it seems to me that Margaret Cho is so "hateful" because, like me, she is angry and doesn't understand why people are so afraid of giving others equal rights. If gays and minorities contribute to the workforce, pay their taxes, and want to enjoy the rights that other Americans (straight whites) do, why shouldn't they be allowed that? What are conservatives so afraid of? It was interesting to me that when posters had no legitimate argument, they resorted to making comments about Cho's weight and race as a negative, which reminds me of how sixth graders behave. I was disgusted with the comments posted by the members, and it saddened me that these people are probably teaching their own kids racism, homophobia, and bigotry at home.
Please explain to me, without being so racist, bigoted, and just plain nasty as you were about Ms. Cho, why so many conservatives feel that it's perfectly fine to limit the rights of people they don't identify with, why it's okay for pharmacists to refuse contraceptives base on their own opinions, and why you believe that it's okay for Dubya to limit choice, freedom, and continue to make it easier for corporations to harm the environment.
It doesn't make sense to me, how seemingly intelligent people are so adament about taking a step backward. I would like to hear your thoughts, since I only have one Republican friend, and the only thing he'll say is that he's a Republican b/c his dad is, and that he's just against partial birth abortion.
P.S., I would especially like to hear from those of you who wrote the hatemail to Margaret Cho, because I am interested in what you have to say about this...

What rights do NON "straight whites" lack that everyone else has? Blacks can't marry? That's NOT the reason for illegitimacy in the black community, if that's what you're thinking. In fact, they don't fit your cozy little racist sterotype, but black people can and do marry. A gay man can't marry? Last I checked he could, Michael Jackson for example. He can't marry another man? Guess what neither can I. Would you support my wish to marry my wife's sister in addition to my wife? Polygamy is a LOT more popular than gays wanting to get married, why don't you support that?

When we throw away all that society is based on, we end up with another typical liberal train wreck - Nazi Germany, Mao's China, Stalin's Russia, Pol Pot's Cambodia. How many innocents do you need to murder before you realize your philosophy is not just deeply flawed and running counter to God and human nature, but downright evil.
You are right to ask questions, but somehow, I doubt you'll wait for the answers. Margaret Cho can give you all you'll need.

Let's get something straight. If someone is born whatever color, fine, I have no problems with that. Gender: (the real chromosone related thing) no problem with that.
But some things in life are choices.
I am far from convinced that homosexuality is something programmed into the genetic code, otherwise there would not be the full-court press recruiting drive being blasted out of virtually every media and 'educational' orifice at my grandchildren and my family.
I am not homophobic. I am not afraid of homosexuals.
But I am, frankly, disgusted.
Especially by people who have made choices which they prefer not to keep to themselves, but who demand to bombard my grandchildren from an early age with the repugnant details of their perversions, and demand the right to do so, in an attempt to recruit them.
I will allow people their choices, but do not claim those choices as a basis for equality, any more than chosing to use drugs, and DO NOT MESS WITH MY KIDS.
I am more offended when these people would make a travesty of the Holy and Sacramental union of marriage by demanding they be allowed to marry, or be considered as the equal of a couple which in my belief system God ordained, when He finds their practices (as do I) an abombination.
When anyone proclaims that, by virtue of their particular perversion, they somehow have the right to rub the rest of society's noses in their affairs, they invite attack.
I made none of the claimed 'attacks' on the woman in question. But if the defense of all I consider decent must come at the expense of her claimed right to proseletyze perversion, so be it.
If someone decides to be less than equal, and claims a right to be equal, that will carry no more weight with me than deciding to dig ditches and claiming a right to be paid as well as a Doctor.
