I received an email recently from a 55-year-old, unemployed American who had been to 14 States looking for work. He couldn’t find any, he said, because "I am not a Mexican."
Despite a desire to work, he could not compete with the cheap wages Mexican illegals will take. They do so because wages in Mexico continue to leave a vast portion of that nation’s population in poverty, forced to live on $3 to $4 dollars per person a day.
According to data from the CIA, 40% of the Mexican population lives below the poverty line. The current population is estimated to be 106,202,900 people and the labor force is estimated to be 34.73 million. Despite being rich in natural resources, the Mexican economy is highly dependent on the U.S. economy. We buy 84% of all Mexican exports, compared to Canada that buys a mere 1.8%. "Per capita income is one-fourth that of the U.S.; income distribution remains highly unequal." That’s a diplomatic way of saying a handful of Mexican elites own most of everything.
There are a lot of reasons advanced to explain why the Bush administration will do nothing to stop the flow of illegals across our southern border, the vast bulk of whom are Mexicans, but the one I had not heard until I received the email was that Mexico would collapse without the money sent back by the Mexicans, legal and illegal, among us. When you look at the economic data, it is the one explanation that begins to make sense. . . . .

I tend to agree with you. Of course it depends on what skills he has, but it seems to me that something should have turned up if he was really trying.
Truly, a career that's worth every cent spent on the training.
His argument is that he's not a Mexican, so he either can migrant work or be in the janitoral bidness. (maybe he was caught eating the urinal cakes?)

At least he has the money to afford traveling to 14 states, it seems. I suppose it would be easier if those states are the smaller ones on the East Coast, but it's still not cheap to travel around like that (gas, food, motels, etc.).
What's happening nowadays isn't much different to the changes of the early 20th century. I'm sure there were buggy-whip manufacturers complaining about the advent of "horseless carriages" and silent-movie actors put out of work when the "talkies" came into vogue, but when your skills are rendered obsolete, it's time to earn new skills.
I also found it interesting that this article doesn't specify exactly what type of work this guy is seeking. Since the Mexicans (illegal aliens, presumably) are taking the jobs he wants, we have to assume that he's unskilled and seeking minimum-wage jobs; one would hope he'd had done better for himself by the time he reached his 55th birthday. Had he complained about outsourcing to India, however, it would be easier to assume that his skills are more high-tech, but that's not the case here.
Either way, if work is that difficult to come by, he should consider getting training in a new line of work. Plenty of trade schools out there, and plenty of people in their 30's or older are back in school doing what they can to keep themselves competitive in today's job market. Things are getting tough out there, but no reason to roll over and take it without a good fight.

Not funny if your skill set puts you in competition with the millions of ILLEGAL and legal immigrants coming here annually. Plus there are the H1Bs and L-1s not covered by the report.

Well, you men and women in uniform are the best America has to offer -- that means you are the tops in the world. When (if) you make it home you will still be tops even if you are unemployed for awhile as you compete with millions and millions who have absolutely no intention of ever becoming Americans.
The report concludes,
" Given the controversial but policy relevant findings on the immigrant role in U.S. labor markets over the past four years and its adverse consequences for younger and less skilled workers, the study calls for a sustained and high level national policy debate over the future role of immigration in U.S. labor markets. This topic should also be a key issue in the Presidential debates this fall."
That was 2004. Well, both candidates avoided the subject. It ain't gong to be avoided in elections from now on. Time to decide, politicos.
