Pro-Life Democrats Critical in Retaking the House Pro-life Democrats to move to leadership positions WASHINGTON, DC – Democrats For Life of America applauded the Democratic leadership today for recruiting pro-life Democrats to run for key Congressional races in this week’s history making elections.

“Right after John Kerry’s loss in 2004, the Democratic Party finally started talking about including pro-life Democrats in the big tent of the Democratic Party. They put their money where their mouths are and assisted pro-life Democrats. Their inclusion helped pro-life Democrats win and played a significant role in handing over control of the US Senate and House. In addition to adding Bob Casey to the Senate, Democrats will see 6 new pro-life Democrats in the House,” said DFLA’s Executive Director Kristen Day. The new pro-life faces in the US House include: Heath Shuler of North Carolina, Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Brad Ellsworth of Indiana, Charlie Wilson of Ohio, Chris Carney and Jason Altmire both of Pennsylvania.

“We’ve said for years that when we expand the big tent of the Democratic Party, Democrats win. Tuesday night is proof. Now Democrats need to continue to allow pro-life Democrats to help set the agenda in the 110th Congress,” said Kristen Day, Executive Director of Democrats For Life of America. “We look forward to working with Congresswomen Nancy Pelosi and the new leaders of the House to promote an agenda that will dramatically reduce the abortion rate in America. We applaud Congresswoman Pelosi understanding that Democrats need to govern from the center and that we must put our words into action by promoting common ground as a way to solve the problems we face.”

Democrats For Life of America’s top priorities for the 110th Congress are: passing the Pregnant Women Support Act, introduced by Congressman Lincoln Davis and received bipartisan support, fully funding the National Cord Blood Inventory Act which will save lives and passing the Child Custody Protection Act.

Several pro-life democrats will assume leadership positions in the new Democratic majority in the House. Rep. Jim Oberstar will chair the Transportation Committee, Rep. Collin Peterson will chair the Agriculture Committee and Rep Ike Skelton will head the Armed Services Committee. Several other pro-life democrats will chair House subcommittees.

Democrats For Life of America was founded in 1999 to mobilize Democrats at the local, state, and national levels. Their primary mission has been to elect pro-life Democrats, support pro-life elected officials, promote a pro-life plank in the Democratic Party platform and achieve legislation that fosters respect for human life. Democrats For Life of America currently has 41 state chapters with plans to expand the group into additional states by the end of the year. In addition to the grassroots support across America, the group has several Members of Congress who are actively promoting the group’s mission.

"Democrats For Life of America’s top priorities for the 110th Congress
are:...fully funding the National Cord Blood Inventory Act..."

I'll applaud if the Democrats do this. And I'll hardly believe it
until it happens.
The Sunday Los Angeles Times did a hit-piece last year on cord-blood
banking, including the name and city of a lawyer that wants to get
a class-action suit up against cord-blood banks.
He didn't specify why, but my guess is that the lawyer and The
LA Times are angry that more people have received treatments/therapies
from their cord blood...than via Embryonic stem cells.

I got the feeling the article was written by an Embryonic stem-cell
zealot that was out to "abort" the competition, no matter how successfully
it performs in the real world.
Unlike ESCs so far.

They were critical in winning elections but they will have no share in running the House.

I believe there are pro-life democrats..they are just ignorant of what the others are doing, until they hit Washington and then they join the crowd..same with republicans..there is something about that city that makes people corrupt..I guess it isn't the city but the people in it...Don't think for a second that Nancy is going to put up with anyone that isn't for what she is for,and that is murder of a babies. The Dem's are going to abort themselves out of business what I mean is they will become extinct. The blacks and Mexicans will have their little voters for them like little soldiers marching.

I think Heath Shuler from NC 11 is a former Republican who was persuaded to switch parties specifically to beat Charles Taylor. I have also heard he is not too bright, so I don't expect him to be able to withstand the pressure to vote with Pelosi rather than according to his personal convictions. I think a lot of conservative Democrats and disgruntled Republicans who voted for these "wolves in sheep's clothing" are going to be shocked and disappointed at what their new heroes are going to do, and what's worse, going to allow the liberals that really control the party to do.

Leaving aside the abortion issue for the moment, this guy's donor list makes interesting reading considering the committee he's going to be chairing.

They never vote against Abortion, they only 'feel' it is wrong, but that is a 'private' view that they cannot 'impose' on others.

None of these 'pro-life' guys will vote for a single anti-abortion bill.

In addition to adding Bob Casey to the Senate, Democrats will see 6 new pro-life Democrats in the House,

IOW, I out of 51 Rats in the Senate and 6 out of 230 Rats in the House claim to be pro-life. Great, now we know that the Rats are actually pro-life, they just hide it well by always voting against pro-life bills, that's all. Meanwhile, back in the real world.................

In the extremely unlikely event, no make that the impossible event, that a pro-life bill ever comes out of a Rat chaired committee, these supposedly pro-life Rats may be allowed to vote for it on the floor because Pelosi will know she has enough votes to kill it without them. That would maintain the illusion that they're actually pro-life when the next election time rolls around. Some of the southern and western Rat Congressmen and Senators who claimed to be pro-2nd Amendment during the time when Rat's had Congress sewed up with large majorities used the same ruse to get elected and re-elected in pro-gun states and districts as long as the Rat leadership knew they didn't need their votes to pass gun control bills.

Old P.T. Barnum was way off the mark when he said there's a sucker born every minute, the typical American voter proves that there are many more than that born every second.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. The Dems do it so we can? We WERE in charge of the spending and no one said no to anyone.

Exactly South dakota, There's no answer to your question.

It IS time to think of a National Day of Prayer on the first Tuesday of November in 2008.

The republicans have been a total failure. It may even be that they're a-holes

Yeah, well we'll just have to wait and see how far they get in convincing the moonbat Dem leadership to having ANYTHING to do with limiting abortion in ANY way. My guess is not far.

We have to help them along by posting where these CINOs get their funding from. These candidates are bought and paid for by the democrats to win the majority. And they will continue to get away with this fraud if we let them.

My point is that we should expose these phonies and win the Congress back with true conservatives. Let have a vote on an assault weapons ban and see how they vote.

I'm against completely against earmarks. But share the gain share the pain and these democrats should share the blame not just do the blaming. And, since everyone is against earmarks let's make them illegal. I'm simply saying that, if you don't want the republicans earmarking like I do, you should also join me in criticizing the Democrats from continuing the practice. If not go to the DU.

Geez Dave I was unaware this was your exclusive reserve and your thoughts and opinions were the only ones that counted.

Just remember the old saying, "What do hemorrhoids and opinions have in common? Every ass**** has one.

The dems invented earmarks Dave, we can't win the voters love doing it because we don't have have a base that wants everything for free like the dems. Get rid of the RINOS and we'll get back to being what Newt and others dreamed of.

Sorry, you have a right to disagree with my opinion to criticize both Republicans and Democrats for earmarks. I just find it hard to just criticize only Republicans like they do on DU.

This has nothing to do with the article. The left is funding phony Prolife democratic candidates to run in red states to steal seats from republicans. Ford in Tennesee was a perfect example that fortunately was exposed. Missouri is a purple state and McCaskill did not run as a phony Prolife democrat.

The issue will be decided by the states and the courts.

Pro-lifers and conservatives need to work within both parties. That's the lesson of this election. It is never a good stategy to put all of your eggs in one basket. The Republican Party placed the right-to-life advocates, evangelicals and social traditionalists in the "sure vote" category and took these constituencies for granted.
