I respectfully disagree. I think McCain would win enough conservative votes, coupled with moderate Repubs and Independents (and some dems who don’t trust Obama or Hillary) to put him well over the top.

Conservatives don’t trust him at all and they make up a significant portion of the Republican voting base.

McCainiac seems to delight in poking conservatives in the eye. He supports amnesty, more gun laws, and removing your First Amendment right of free speech. He would rather work with Kennedy than a conservative. He LIKES the attention that he gets by giving the conservative base the finger more than he likes doing what is right.

McCain does NOT support amnesty.

Do you realize that the Comprehensive Immigration Reform bill actually PUNISHED the immigrants who were/are here illegally? ($2000. fine) And it required them to pay back taxes. It also provided for increased border enforcement, including funding for 300 miles of vehicle barriers, 105 camera and radar towers, and 20,000 more Border Patrol agents. Also the bill would have required an immigrant to be IN THEIR HOME COUNTRY when they apply for their green card.
Before you criticize McCain for actually trying to fix a big problem, how about reading the provisions of the bill. Check out Wikipedia, that ought to be simple enough for you.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comprehensive_Immigration_Reform_Act_of_2007
And please do not fail to understand that by NOT acting on this problem, and leaving things AS THEY ARE, all the current illegals have in effect - AMNESTY!
Give McCain some credit for actually addressing the problem - that’s a heck of a lot more than is getting done NOW!

No one has done more to undercut the Conservative agenda than John McCain and his gang of 14

I guess you’re just weak. I intend to hold out much longer than that.

So they get to commit MULTIPLE felonies (entering the country after being deported, obtaining and using illegal identification, falsification of government documents, cheating on their taxes, etc) that you or I would go to jail for, and get away with it with a paltry $2000 fine and pay taxes for only 3 of the past 5 years?

Sounds like amnesty to me.

Where can I sign up to pay $2000 and get TWO YEARS worth of taxes back?

And why should they pay three years worth of back taxes when they are fairly certain that they won’t be deported anyway?

I’d rather see McCain as president than the witch.

So tell me - what is actually getting DONE to address this problem NOW??

CIR may not have been a perfect solution, but it was a STEP in the right direction.

Oh I get it, you’d rather the situation just continue to multiply & get worse than accept an imperfect solution.

At least McCain had the guts to TRY to DO something about the problem!

Democrats do not fear McCain. Edwards all but endorsed him the other day. A number of Democrats were active in contacting voters in previous primaries to cross over and vote for McCain.

If McCain/Huckabee/Rudy win, it will remove the immigration issue from the general election. Even the majority of Democrats oppose amnesty and perks for illegal aliens. Only the politicians are eager to sellout this country.

How can securing borders, identifying the illegals & prescribing fines, taxes & returninmg home to apply for a green card be the WRONG thing?

It is the wrong thing if it allows people who have committed MULTIPLE FELONIES become US citizens by paying a paltry $2000 fine.

*Snerk*.

Where *WERE* you during the FR meltdown over this bill?

It was dismembered molecule by molecule.

And yes, I lived in Phoenix during the debate over this bill.

McCain was pushing Amnesty as hard as possible at that time: it was all over the local talk shows (given Arizona's proximity to Mexico and California).

Look here and here and here, look at posts 27, 32, and 59 for starters.

Nice try, though.
