It all depends on the issue. In some cases, national security, in other cases, it is part of a trade agreement (let us keep a base here and we will give you $xx for your infrastructure, in some cases, misguided policy, in other cases, keeping trade doors open result in a return on investment. The reasons are as diverse as the countries we supply aid to.

(Most of us have been sick of it wayyyy longer than that).

This is obviously one of those trolls who tries to get FReepers to make racist, xenophobic posts to sully the reputation of the board.

Domestic special interests. They kick back money to politicians.

“international food aid” = money to domestic farm interests. “Military aid” = money to domestic MI interests. “Aids aid” = money to domestic Big Pharma. Etc.

Good question. What would you cut first?

Me:
UN funding
Aid to any dictatorship
Aid to any socialist/communist countries

Do you realize how much Barack Obama plans to increase the foreign donations over and above what we give now? He plans to give it to the UN to manage.

Because it’s cheaper than going to war.

We keep friends and influence others by assisting them.

Doesn’t always work but in the end it’s in our self interest and cheaper then allowing regions of the world to fester without our influence and assistance.

We also have a moral obligation as a free nation to assist others.

That's a dammed good question. Instead of foreign aid like we've always done, we should just send IOUs to nations we want to assist with out "money".

" If you really are sick of politics, why are you here? "

Well ? there was a time when us Republicans ( at one time, being a Republican was synonymous of being a Conservative ) were sick of the " Other side " crap and politics.
Times have changed, and now ( I would have not thought I would live to see the day ) that we are actually sick of our own side's crap and politics.
So ? that begs the question ? why are any one of us here on this web sight if we are sick of politics, lol.

Aside from my other comment on this thread, although humorous, it's all about geo-politics....
One day, our friend could be our enemy, and our enemy could be our friend.

Because if you stop spending, your creditors will think you are worried about servicing your debt. They will then attempt to foreclose and get their money before you go broke.

No, no, he wants to give something like 850 billion dollars to the UN to administer to help third world countries. Black Liberationists oppose all use of military by the US, so we won’t need a military if Obama is elected.

You’re making my point for me.
The U.N. also opposes all use of force by the U.S.
That’s why Obama will turn them over to the U.N.
Then AMERICAN forces and hardware will be used for the interests of the U.N., NOT America!
