Josef Konsumer, a home-based employee and portfolio manager for ICBC/CiticorpChase, a Chinese-owned multinational investment bank, wakes up to hear his alarm clock go off at 8am, and gets out of bed, his 47-year old body aching from an aggressive personal trainer session from the day before. His morning double espresso with frothed skim milk and mocha is already waiting for him, thanks to his new Korean-made LG RoboCafe, which brews and extracts a perfect crema every time using pre-portioned, mess-free nitrogen-sealed pods imported from Brazil. He considers nudging his wife, Mindy, to get up and make him breakfast, but decides to leave her alone. Best not to wake sleeping dragons.

Used to use xmms until I discovered Amarok. Works great. If you're running Linux, get it and try it out.

Personally, I think if any distro is going to pull it off, it will be Ubuntu.

You're probably right, but only because it's got a good marketing campaign, if you can call it that. Linux=Ubuntu=linux in many people's minds. I don't like Ubuntu very much, and every time I get the idea that I want to try it again, it ticks me off.

I'm a PCLinuxOS guy. I'm always smiling when I load it onto a machine, set up the wireless, and it's all humming. I LOVE not having to get up, dig through the pile of disks looking for the printer driver disk like I have to with Windows. I just add printer, and it finds the printer. People that are afraid to switch from Windows are really missing out. Linux is no longer "hard" or geeky. I don't EVER use the command line. Not ever. I have to do command line, and I'll drop that distro, Ubuntu included.

I know of two: VLC (also lets you watch Shoutcast TV video streams) and Rhythmbox (lets you add/bookmark Shoutcast radio streams). Exaile should also work.

Yes, among people I know, Ubuntu is appearing on computers at a surprising pace.

I use Amarok, but if you want something like Winamp, you'll probably like xmms.

You're right...I didn't know it had gone away.

Audacious seems to be a reasonable replacement.

For Xubuntu, I’d pick either Rhythmbox, Exaile, Listen, Amarok, or the Beep Media Player. XMMS is a straight-forward clone of Winamp, but development of that stopped a long time ago, so I wouldn’t recommend it.

However, you can install Winamp on Xubuntu provided you have a fairly-recent version of Wine (along with Wine Gecko). The latest version of Wine is 1.1.23. It supports a LOT of Windows-based programs.
