Howard Kurtz is reporting that President-elect Barack Obama has offered the post of Surgeon General to Dr. Sanjay Gupta of CNN fame . . . . (see video report)

Just when you thought Obama couldn’t make a more useless, unqualified, and worse choice than Panetta to head the CIA...
I was rooting for Dr. Phil to get the job.
What does this guy do? Sit in his bath tub and dream up a cabinet for the TV show West Wing? I guess in an age of celebrity, why actually tap administrators who can do a job or who are committed to expanding a particular area of expertise? Instead, why not get a cool celebrity to fill the post so we can maintain the theatrics.
To paraphrase the Senator in the movie Gladiator:
“He will give them entertainment and they will love him for it.”
He could have picked anyone from the cast of Grey’s Anatomy and got roughly the same qualifications. And, there are even two black ones to choose from !!!!

It’s nothing more than a ceremonial post for someone with an M.D. after his name, so someone at home in front of a TV camera should do fine. After all, who even remembers who George W. Bush appointed as Surgeon General? Anyhow, compared to the train wrecks Clinton appointed (we all remember Joycelyn Elders for all the wrong reasons—though she did have a grip on things!), Sanjay won’t be so bad. I’m damning with faint praise, of course.

Gupta hosts “House Call” on CNN, contributes reports to CBS News and writes a column for Time magazine. He is a neurosurgeon and is on the faculty at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. During the Clinton administration, he was a White House fellow and special adviser to then-first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.
What? Joycelyn Elders wasn’t available? That’s no way to recreate the Clinton administration. BHO doesn’t understand the “rammerfurcations” of his actions.
I was really surprised when Campbell Brown didn’t get the CIA director job.
If I were asked what is the annual budget of the office of the Surgeon General, I would know the answer off the top of my head—
