Obama Op-Ed Dials Up the Fear to Get His $1 Trillion Stimulus Plan Passed

President Barack Obama has written an Op-Ed Piece that appears in the Washington Post today, in which he rolls out the big gun of fear in order to pressure Congress to pass his nearly $1 Trillion Economic Stimulus Plan. Obama warns that unless the package is passed swiftly, America may plunge into an economic recession "we may not be able to reverse":

By now, it's clear to everyone that we have inherited an economic crisis as deep and dire as any since the days of the Great Depression. Millions of jobs that Americans relied on just a year ago are gone; millions more of the nest eggs families worked so hard to build have vanished. People everywhere are worried about what tomorrow will bring.

What Americans expect from Washington is action that matches the urgency they feel in their daily lives -- action that's swift, bold and wise enough for us to climb out of this crisis.

Because each day we wait to begin the work of turning our economy around, more people lose their jobs, their savings and their homes. And if nothing is done, this recession might linger for years. Our economy will lose 5 million more jobs. Unemployment will approach double digits. Our nation will sink deeper into a crisis that, at some point, we may not be able to reverse.

That's why I feel such a sense of urgency about the recovery plan before Congress. With it, we will create or save more than 3 million jobs over the next two years, provide immediate tax relief to 95 percent of American workers, ignite spending by businesses and consumers alike, and take steps to strengthen our country for years to come.

This plan is more than a prescription for short-term spending -- it's a strategy for America's long-term growth and opportunity in areas such as renewable energy, health care and education. And it's a strategy that will be implemented with unprecedented transparency and accountability, so Americans know where their tax dollars are going and how they are being spent. . . . . . MORE
If Franklin Roosevelt worked hard to quell the fears of Americans facing the Great Depression ("We have nothing to fear but fear itself."), President Obama is seeking to dial up the fear in order to get what he wants. Let's hope Republicans in the Senate will not be cowed by these tactics into going along with the current plan which does little to create jobs, and does a lot to fund every Democratic special interest group that has had a hand out for the last 30 years.

Ah, the politics of fear. I thought the libs were against that kind of thing. Yet here we have Obama and Pelosi leading the charge to scare people into supporting this orgy of spending.

I guess it's just that old liberal hypocrisy rearing its ugly head.

You know, I can understand a community organizer being a fear monger, but a president needs to be a leader. Obama needs to decide which one he wants to be.

By now, it's clear to everyone that we have inherited an economic crisis

That would be from Barney Frank and Chris Dodd.

I read his op-ed and I have to say that this guy is a lightweight. He doesn't behave like a president, more like the left-wing kook that he is.

When one can’t depend on a teleprompter to guide you, rely on your Starbucks writer to pen you an op-ed.

It is titled “I will give you ice cream” and it comes from a third grade teacher from Nashville, TN

Who worries about “the cow” when it is all about the “Ice Cream”

She reports that the most eye-opening civics lesson she had was while teaching a third grade class this year. The Presidential election was heating up and some of the students showed an interest.

She decided that the class would have an election for class president. They would choose the nominees. They would have a campaign and the class would vote. To simplify the process, the candidates were nominated by other class members. They discussed what kinds of characteristics the student candidates should have. There were several nominations, and from those, Jamie and Olivia were picked to run for the top spot. The class had done a great job in their selections.

Both candidates were good kids! I though Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support. She had never seen Olivia’s mother.

The day arrived when the candidates were to make their speeches; Jamie went first. He had specific ideas about how to make our class a better place. He ended by promising to do his very best. Everyone applauded. He sat down and Olivia came to the podium. Her speech was concise. She said, “if you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream”. She sat down. The class went wild. “Yes! Yes! We want ice cream”. She surely could say more, but she did not have to.

A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream? She wasn’t sure. Would her parents buy it or would the class pay for it? She didn’t know. The class really didn’t care. All they were thinking about was the ice cream, Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a landslide.

Every time Barack Obama opened his mouth, he offered iced cream, and fifty-two percent of he people reacted like none year olds. They wanted ice cream. The other forty-eight percent of us know we’re going to have to feed the cow and clean up the mess.

That is your civics lesson for the day!

And the economic crisis was caused by our own government.

Why would ANYONE think Congress could provide the answers? Or that an unaccomplished professional political organizer and campaigner would have any answers?

The emperor is naked and so is his entire court.

Anybody else notice that 0bama NEVER speaks to the creativity, the resilience, the ingenuity of the American people? Everything that works in the US, everything that has been achieved in the 230 or so short years the nation has been in existence...that’s all a fluke, an accident of history. No, all we hear from him and his cronies is the need for the government to exert extra-Constitutional control and intervention into literally every aspect of our private affairs and to manage all aspects of the economy. Americans are vapid enough to elect this band of weasels but I believe in my heart that Americans are not happy about the idea that they cannot get themselves through the coming dark times without a giant rake-off from the lying thieves they unwittingly elected.

they have no patience for the same old partisan gridlock that stands in the way of action while our economy continues to slide.

Dude! The gridlock IS bi-partisan. Both Democrats ad Republicans have voted against your stimulus. Congratulations! You've brought the parties together!

It's the support for the stimulus that is partisan -- it's just Democrats trying to get their way without working with the other party. That's what you stand for, you leftwing extremist.

Hussein is still playing at being a senator...the first job for which he wasn’t qualified. One expects this sort of fear mongering and phony bluster from our supreme 100, but not from a president. This disgraceful occupant of the White House will rewrite the definition of incompetence over the next 4 years. It’ll be interesting to watch the MSM tie itself in hopeless pretzels trying to bail him out of his own stupidity.

"All he needs is a couple RINOS."

True. But Obie is seriously sounding like he's becoming unhinged. He's become a used car salesman pushing us to sign the deal before we look under the hood. He's writing Op-eds now? Who is he trying to reach? Why not just go on TV again? Getting a little too emotional? Afraid he'll show a little too much anger and frustration? Interesting....

Panic, fear-mongering, ‘the coming catastrophe.’ It is SO different from — during very REAL bad times — “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.”

I HATE being manipulated by hysteria. The more they try it, the more I will resist. Makes me want to ask little o — ‘Or what?? Bring it on, let’s see if we can rise to the challenge.’
