Been unemployed for 2.5 months now. Used to find work (locally) within a few DAYS. Never had to take unemployment before in my life. LA area is dead for jobs. Found an incredible job opportunity in Texas working on a very super secret XBox 360 Natal project.

So off to Dallas we go! Thanks for any help or insight you may have.

If you are going to be working in Lewisville, I would recommend looking in Flower Mound for a place to live.

We live in Keller, but it may be a little far for Lewisville work. 20-30 minutes in good traffic. Very conservative area and amazing schools (which is why we chose here to live). Best of luck to you! Welcome and Howdy!

I can tell you that much. But anything more and I’d have to kill you!

Congrats on the job and the move! I have never been to TX, though in my SHTF senario, my plan is to print off my posts on FR and attach them to my request for entry! There are tons of FReepers from the great state of TX on here as you know and I have no doubt the suggestions will be pouring in soon! God bless you and keep you and your young precious family in His care during this move. God is truly setting up his chess board at this time!

I may be wrong, but I think 2nd div vet knows a lot about the area.

When you get twice the house for 1/3 the cost in CA, you will adjust nicely. The no state income tax helps, too.

You did the right thing by not moving to Boston. Texas is the greatest state in the country right now and Dallas is an awesome place to live. I live in the Boston area and plan to move to Dallas soon as well. The weather and natural beauty in Dallas is admittedly not California level but the low taxes, low housing costs, conservative government, great people and awesome food more than make up for that. Texas still has that quintissential can do self reliant American spirit and you have just made the best move of your life. As a mis-placed Texan in spirit welcome to the great state of Texas.

I’m so jealous! I wanna go back! We still have jobs in NY - starting to plan for a move south. My newly married baby girl lives in East Dallas close to Mesquite. Wonderful place to live!

Congrats and good luck. Unfortunately the politicians have destroyed California.

Lots of retired Californians are moving to Texas. There’s a reason.

I lived near there in Denton, TX for a couple of years. It’s a nice place and at least 10+ years ago was one of the fastest growing areas in the United States.

Dear Rom:

Since you're going to be working on the north side of the Metroplex:

Flower Mound, Farmers Branch, McKinney, Plano, are all beautiful places to live. Lots of HOAs in them, so if you aren't an HOA type person, check carefully.

Flower Mound is one of the best. They kept the oil and gas drillers out of their city, so you probably won't have to worry about a gas rig in your back yard. Everywhere else, check to see if you have your mineral rights, if they signed a mineral rights lease, and then GET A COPY. In Texas, the mineral estate is superior to surface estate, so if they signed a crappy lease, it could mean trouble down the road for you.

If you are looking for a very good, affordable home closer to the heart of Dallas, areas of Richardson are beautiful, too.

2ndDivVet lives in the same general area as I do. He probably knows much more than me though—I’ve only been here a year and a half. Still learning!

I moved to PA from CA - I had lived in CA for over 40 years. The weather is the weather; you will be fine!

I heard Arlington is a nice place to live.

I have a friend who moved to McKinney Texas (Suburb of Dallas just North). He seems to like it. You may want to look there.

It depends also what you want to pay for housing. I would think that L.A. house prices are way above Dallas for the same thing. So, you should get more for your $.

The Dallas area has a lot to offer. I raised 4 kids there. They are still there raising families. I retired to rural E. Texas.

I think you will be glad of the move for more reasons than you can imagine.
