For the most part, CPAC ran smoothly, but there's one thing they don't do well, and that's straw polls. In 2008 Romney stacked it by purchasing many, many CPAC tickets for his friends. I don't know how they did it previously, but this year voting was cut off at noon on Friday, before probably half of the attendees were credentialed. As a result, only about 25% of the attendees voted (2,500 out of 10,000), so those who like work for a living and could only come for the big events on Saturday, didn't get counted.
But ALL the Ron Paul supporters had Friday tickets, because that was the day the Congressman spoke and he had his book signing. He has an extremely loyal following.
So guess who gets 31% of the straw poll on Ron Paul Day?
By my count 775 people out of 10,000 vote for him and he gets all the headlines.

Yeah, it was the “kids” that gave us Obama. I don’t trust the youth vote to be “educated” ... they vote like its their favorite football team. Good analysis.

And Paul was set to speak just after the man who spoke out against CPAC inviting GOProud. Now we know who made up the crowd that was booing.
Paul wins all the polls loses all the votes.
Ron Paul Dead LAST in King County Washington District Caucuses held Feb 13th. I would trust a caucus poll over a meeting of activist with a mission.
Ron Paul was at the very bottom of a long list of names on the straw poll taken at the GOP Caucus I attended last Saturday. Out of around 300 people at my district caucus Paul got only 2 votes. And this is King County WA, where Paul favored better than other areas of the country in 2008.
And who won?
Palin was way out in front and the winner.
And McCain did so much better.
I think I know what they were doing with the Straws..BEFORE the Poll!!
Its simple, CPAC has become economically driven, not socially driven.
In particular when you have younger folks there who are more interested in the freedom/liberty economically driven conservative agenda, as opposed to the social “this is how you’ll live your life” agenda
I would say McCain did the same.
And McCain did so much better.
I suspect the choice will not be between Paul and McCain in 2012.
The fact remains that Ron Paul is unelectable. He's basically an entertaining novelty, but mainstream America wouldn't elect him dogcatcher, no less POTUS and unless the opposition gets themselves organized in some fashion, ZERO will be guarenteed re-election. UGH!!
Makes me doubt the sanity of those who took this poll.
With unemployment among recent college grads running over 20%, is it any surprise that the youth are so focused on economic issues?

I love the attempts of the Paul haters to rationalize their lack of enthusiam for their candidates.

Excellent point. Those who lacked enough enthusiasm to show up and vote for their candidates are making excuses. Why didn't they get off their butts and vote? The answer is that they didn't care enough.
Well, it is a bit early to be lining up behind candidates. What would be the point? I appreciate that the Paulites have the same enthusiasm I had for Reagan. We agree on many things, too, but their head in the sand foreign policy is, well, a little nuts. And REALLY dangerous.
And 2008 was an election year.
