“BINYAMINE: A “BRIDGING WEAK TIE””

SNIPPET: “binyamine, on the other hand, appears to be alive and well, though websites closely associated with him are encountering some difficulties (e.g. the Deen al-Haq forum, the ssjr05.* blog, and the murabiteen forum, to name three).

An examination of online activities by binyamine leads to the conclusion that he is likely involved with Dar al-Murabiteen, and that he links multiple terrorist networks together through his work translating, transcribing, and distributing jihadi media content. He is linked, in no particular order, to

• Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan
• The Pakistan and Afghan Taliban
• as-Sahab, al-Emara, and al-Malahem media outfits
• al-Shabaab and their al-Qimmah forum

This is what Granovetter meant by a bridging weak tie - the kind of “weak” tie that is strong, as he links multiple networks. Among other things, all this helps explain why Samir Khan looks to Dar al-Murabiteen for translations when he’s assembling content for Inspire Magazine.

What follows is a sample of the the data I’ve collected that document binyamine’s activities, his connections, his aliases, and his associations.”

If “it” is doing a lone wolf attack, they implore you. If “it” means hopping on a plane to join up in Yemen, then yes you can.”

New Issue of Inspire Magazine

Al Qaeda of the Arabian Peninsula has come out with the 5th issue of its Inspire Magazine. It’s got some more of the same — the wheres and whens of attacking American targets, etc. But interestingly, the issue lays out the case for why Al Qaeda supports the Arab revolutions, leveling the arguments of those who say that the group doesn’t benefit from the general upheaval. It also shows how Al Qaeda sees itself as continuing the jihad begun by the Muslim Brotherhood, but dropped when the MB became interested in elections.

“Counterterrorism Suffers, al-Qaida Benefits from Yemen Turmoil”

by IPT News • Apr 6, 2011 at 3:26 pm

SNIPPET: “Counterterrorism operations in Yemen “have ground to a halt,” and al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) is the big beneficiary, the New York Times reports. Diplomats and counterterrorism officials say that AQAP (the organization linked to the Fort Hood massacre and the Underwear Bomber’s attempted suicide attack on a plane near Detroit) is now able “to operate more freely inside the country and to increase plotting for possible attacks against Europe and the United States,” according to the Times.

Even worse, the news comes as American intelligence officials have learned that AQAP officials have increased their planning discussions about another attack. The latest issue of AQAP’s Inspire Magazine also reinforces the organization’s consistent emphasis on carrying out attacks in the West. “…Killing 10 soldiers in America for example, is much more effective than killing 100 apostates in the Yemeni military,” the letters section tells an aspiring jihadist.”

“Hacking Terrorist Websites Commonplace”
by IPT News • Jun 3, 2011 at 1:32 pm

SNIPPET: “British intelligence destroyed several pages of al-Qaida’s first edition of Inspire magazine, in one of many instances of Western intelligence sources hacking into jihadi websites, according to Wired.com. However, the issue of disrupting jihadi websites and publications raises questions about the value of cyber attacks, and whether it exposes sensitive intelligence resources.

The case of the al-Qaida’s Inspire magazine illustrates the challenge to intelligence. “The head of the newly formed U.S. Cyber Command, Gen. Keith Alexander, argued that blocking the magazine was a legitimate counterterrorism target and would help protect U.S. troops overseas,” the Washington Post reported. “But the CIA pushed back, arguing that it would expose sources and methods and disrupt an important source of intelligence.”

“The proposal also rekindled a long-standing interagency struggle over whether disrupting a terrorist Web site overseas was a traditional military activity or a covert activity — and hence the prerogative of the CIA.”

Although the CIA won out and the proposal was rejected, British intelligence was already hacking the magazine. It took nearly two weeks for al-Qaida operatives to release a corrected version. In the political fallout that followed, House Armed Services Committee Vice Chairman Mac Thornberry (R-Tex) included language in the 2012 defense authorization bill which authorized cyber attacks by the military.

Attacks on jihadi websites are nothing new.”

“Al-Qaida Issues New Mail Bombing Threat”

IPT News
June 15, 2011

SNIPPET: “The FBI has issued a new warning about an al-Qaida-inspired plot to assassinate key government and private sector individuals with mail bombs.

The plot is only “aspirational,” says a report reviewed by the Investigative Project on Terrorism. But FBI officials have expressed concern about the actions of lone wolf attackers already in the United States.

The threats follow a June 3 video featuring American al-Qaida member Adam Gadahn “in which he encourages acts of individual jihad, members of several extremist Web forums posted names of companies and its leaders to target,” the FBI warning said. That video appeared initially on the closed al-Qaida web forum Shumukh al-Islam.

The threat has since gone viral, appearing in major forums like Ansar al-Mujahideen and Somali terrorist site Al-Qimmah.

A translation of the text of the threat by the Investigative Project on Terrorism, taken from the original posting, provides more detail on the planned attacks.

“The Idea – Determine lists of the names of individual actors in the Zionist-Crusader war on our Ummah [nation], from the directors of companies, supporters of the war, and media organizations that support the false propaganda, and the instigating members of Congress,” states Shumukh al-Islam participant Yaman Mukhadab. “[There will be] a focus only on the most hostile countries, America, Britain, and France.”

The list of names includes President Obama, along with key generals, and senior intelligence officials, as well as private counterterrorism experts like IPT Executive Director Steven Emerson, Daniel Pipes, and Yigal Carmon of the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI). Preacher John Hagee is identified for his outspoken support for Israel, and Coca-Cola is called “proud sponsors of the 2003 Iraq invasion.”

The addresses of several branches of the RAND Corp., considered to be the “devil’s workshop” by members of jihadi forum Ansar al-Mujahideen, also are listed. The RAND Corporation regularly figures into Islamist conspiracies about the West’s War on Islam, because of its reports about strengthening moderate forms of Islam. “One should not underestimate the potential negative impact” of RAND’s push for moderate Islam, notes American cleric Mohamed El-Moctar El-Shinqiti, because the company is “known to have close readership among key American political and military leaders.”

Although threats on prominent Americans may not be new, America’s recent rash of strikes on al-Qaida figures has ratcheted up the terrorists’ need for revenge.

“A previous video from Gadahn in March 2010 similarly called for small attacks in the United States, but failed to have any observable significant resonance within the online extremist community,” the FBI report noted. “However, UBL’s death may be creating a wider or more receptive audience for AQ core propaganda messages and be a catalyst for reactions from individuals inspired by the AQ message.” The recent killings of prominent al-Qaida leader Fazul Abdullah Mohammed and the reported killing of Ilyas Kashmiri have also elicited calls for revenge.

Notably, the post calls for sending “booby-trapped parcels” to the residential addresses of dozens of government officials and private individuals.

Al-Qaida has already recommended the use of mail bombs against American targets in the past. “$4,200” was the title of November 2010 issue of al-Qaida’s Inspire Magazine, highlighting how little it cost for the group to launch major attacks through the mail.”

“Happy Birthday Inspire!”

SNIPPET: “Well, it’s been about one year since the American clique at Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula rolled out “Inspire” magazine for an adoring public.

During that time, the project — run by American cleric Anwar Awlaki and American blogger Samir Khan — has captured a lot of the public imagination regarding the nature of the war on terrorism, without producing a lot of clearly quantifiable results.”

SNIPPET: “Is Inspire on hiatus for an editorial reevaluation in light of bin Laden’s withering critique? Are Awlaki and Khan too busy running for their lives to propagandize?”

“Latest al-Qaida Magazine Touts Gains and Losses”

IPT News
July 19, 2011

SNIPPET: “Victories on the battlefield and fresh martyrs underline al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula’s [AQAP] territorial gains, according to the latest issue of its English-language Inspire magazine. Its cover story is called “Sadness, Contentment, and Aspiration.””

SNIPPET: “The magazine addresses Osama bin Laden’s death with both lamentations on the “loss of a great leader” and congratulations for his achieving the goal of martyrdom. But it pledges that his death will have little effect on the future of the organization.

“The news brought us a mixed sentiment of sadness, contentment and aspiration,” wrote American jihadist Samir Khan, in the magazine’s cover article.

“Sadness because we lost one of the greatest Islamic revolutionaries - if not, the greatest revolutionary - in modern times. Contentment because we knew that he achieved what Prophet Muhammad always yearned for: shahada’[martyrdom]. Aspiration because we remembered our Prophet’s guarantee that jihad will resume till Judgment Day.”

His death is also just one in a chain of leaders al-Qaida has lost, Khan wrote.

“Living in the States never made me think twice about the path I was undertaking, although many of the mujahidin leaders were killed such as Abu Layth al-Libi, Abu Khabbab al-Masri, Mullah Dadullah, Abu Mus’ab az-Zarqawi and others. For me and all of those who follow the path correctly, jihad is not for the sake of these commanders and leaders; rather it’s for the sake of Allah.””

“Bombmaking materials allegedly found in soldier’s motel correspond with al-Qaeda recipe”
By Jason Ukman

SNIPPET: “The bombmaking materials that were allegedly discovered in the motel room of Pfc. Naser Abdo, the soldier accused of plotting an attack near Fort Hood, Tex., correspond with a list of bombmaking “ingredients” published last year in an al-Qaeda magazine.

The ingredients were listed in an article that appeared last year in Inspire, the English-language magazine of al-Qaeda’s Yemen-based affiliate. That same article, titled “Make a bomb in the kitchen of your Mom,” was found in Abdo’s backpack, along with items including wires, gunpowder and a pressure cooker, according to an affidavit filed Friday in federal court in Waco.

Inspire is believed to be produced by Samir Khan...”

“Inspire 7 – American Jihadi Samir Khan: ‘A Powerful Media Production is as Hard-Hitting as an Operation in America’”

SNIPPET: “In an article in the seventh issue of Inspire, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’s English-language magazine, U.S.-born Samir Khan hails Al-Qaeda’s “media jihad” as a component in the war against the U.S. that is of equal importance to actual attacks on it. Khan asserts that Al-Qaeda has won the preliminary stages of the battle for the hearts and minds of Muslims, thus ensuring that the organization’s ideology will live on. One of the reasons for this victory, he explains, lies in the fact that the West and the media present Al-Qaeda’s ideology as nothing but terrorism, whereas the organization’s creed is that of Islam, a fact that earns it the support of Muslims.

Khan concludes the article by listing the four key elements which enable Al-Qaeda to win the media war: the technological savvy of Al-Qaeda’s media operatives, the U.S.’s failure to respond to Al-Qaeda’s propaganda, the U.S.’s media “blunders” which damage its image in Muslim public opinion, and the general suspicion in which Muslims view the U.S.”

“Former Charlotte man killed in Yemen drone attack”

SNIPPET: “SANAA, Yemen (WBTV) - A Charlotte man who ran the al-Qaida newsletter from Yemen was killed in a drone attack that also took out a prominent cleric Friday.

Khan, from Charlotte, just published a new issue of al-Qaeda’s online magazine earlier this week. WBTV was the first to report about Khan in 2008 and at the time Khan began criticizing WBTV.

In addition to Khan, the U.S. airstrike Friday also killed American-Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.

Khan, who was 22-years-old in 2008, was of Pakistani heritage from Charlotte who produced “Inspire,” an English-language Web magazine which spread al-Qaida ideology and promoted attacks against U.S. targets, even running articles on how to put together explosives.

Khan was living in Yemen and his main article in the latest issue dealt with American media.

In an earlier issue, Khan wrote that he had moved to Yemen and joined al-Qaida’s fighters, pledging to “wage jihad for the rest of our lives.””

Breaking News: Awlaki, Samir Khan Reportedly Dead

IPT News
September 30, 2011

American-born al-Qaida cleric Anwar al-Awlaki was killed Friday by a U.S. airstrike in Yemen, administration officials say.

Awlaki, 40, was among the terrorist group’s most charismatic figures, expanding al-Qaida’s violent theology to a new pool of potential recruits by speaking and writing in English. He also was tied to a series of attacks, including the Fort Hood massacre and the attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day 2009. An Associated Press dispatch calls the strike “the biggest U.S. success in hitting al-Qaida’s leadership since the May killing of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.”

He was the most visible figure in al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, an al-Qaida affiliate considered the most dangerous and capable of carrying out terrorist attacks.

“Relief, anger at mosque where al-Awlaki preached”

By MATTHEW BARAKAT
Associated Press

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) —

SNIPPET: “Dar al-Hijrah Islamic Center is among the largest and most influential mosques on the East Coast, but has been stung by its associations with al-Awlaki and other targets in the U.S. fight against terrorism. Two of the Sept. 11 hijackers worshipped there briefly when al-Awlaki was imam. Army psychiatrist Maj. Nidal Hasan, the suspect in the Fort Hood, Texas shootings that left 13 dead in 2009, attended services there occasionally.”

SNIPPET: “The Sept. 11 hijackers who worshipped at Dar al-Hijrah, Khalid al-Mihdhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi, met al-Awlaki earlier in San Diego, where he was imam at al-Ribat al-Islami mosque.”

“Leader of Revolution Muslim Pleads Guilty to Using Internet to Solicit Murder and Encourage Violent Extremism”

U.S. Attorney’s Office
February 09, 2012

Eastern District of Virginia

ALEXANDRIA, VA—Jesse Curtis Morton, aka Younus Abdullah Muhammed, 33, of New York City, pleaded guilty today to using his position as a leader of Revolution Muslim Organization’s Internet sites to conspire to solicit murder, make threatening communications, and use the Internet to place others in fear.

Neil H. MacBride, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; James W. McJunkin, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office; and Raymond W. Kelly, New York City Police Commissioner, made the announcement after the plea was accepted by U.S. District Judge Liam O’Grady.

Morton faces a maximum penalty five years in prison for each of the three charges when he is sentenced on May 18, 2012.

“Jesse Morton operated Revolution Muslim to radicalize those who saw and heard his materials online and to incite them to engage in violence against those they believed to be enemies of Islam,” said U.S. Attorney MacBride. “We may never know all of those who were inspired to engage in terrorism because of Revolution Muslim, but the string of recent terrorism cases with ties to Morton’s organization demonstrates the threat it posed to our national security. We’re grateful to the FBI, NYPD, and their law enforcement partners throughout the world who made today’s conviction possible.”

“Individuals such as Morton who encourage violence and create fear over the Internet are a danger to our society and to the freedoms we enjoy as citizens,” said Assistant Director in Charge McJunkin. “Today’s plea, and other recent cases of those associated with Morton’s organization, demonstrate the widespread nature of this danger. Together with our partner law enforcement agencies, and with the assistance of the community, the FBI will continue to pursue those who promulgate violent extremism and promote the radicalization of others.”

“Fortunately, NYPD Intelligence Division detectives were in a position to learn exactly how Morton used the Internet to conspire to solicit murder, and how he encouraged others to solicit the murder of an artist whose material he deemed offensive,” said Police Commissioner Kelly. “This important plea resulted because the NYPD’s monitoring of Morton’s activities, combined with the investigative and prosecutorial expertise of the FBI and the U.S. Attorney for Eastern District of Virginia, made for a strong case, in addition to a strong partnership.”

According to a statement of facts filed with his plea agreement, Morton founded Revolution Muslim in December 2007 and created various online forums that contained postings and information supportive of violent extremism. Morton and his associates used the organization’s websites to encourage Muslims to engage in violence against those they believed to be enemies of Islam and to support Osama bin Laden, Anwar Al-Awlaki, al Qaeda, the Taliban, and others espousing violence. They posted messages in support of the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, the November 2009 killings at Ft. Hood and attacks and future threats against Jewish organizations, among others.

Through his online forums, Morton conspired with Zachary Chesser, of Fairfax County, Va., and others to solicit the murder of an artist tied to the “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day” movement in May 2010, including posting online a magazine that included the artist in a hit list for violent extremists to take out and a message from Anwar Al-Awlaki that explicitly called for the artist’s assassination. In justifying these actions, Morton posted online a speech of his asserting that “Islam’s position is that those that insult the Prophet may be killed” and exhorting his listeners to fight the “disbelievers near you.”

In addition, Morton admitted through his statement of facts that he aided Chesser in taking repeated steps in April 2010 to encourage violent extremists to attack the writers of South Park for an episode that featured Muhammad in a bear suit, including highlighting their residence and urging online readers to “pay them a visit.” Among the steps they took were posting on multiple occasions speeches by Anwar Al-Awlaki, which explained the Islamic justification for killing those who insult or defame Muhammad. Morton worked with Chesser to draft a message for the website regarding the South Park threats, including a quote from Osama bin Laden that “If there is no check in the freedom of your words, then let your hearts be open to the freedom of our actions.” Morton and Chesser posted the final version of this statement on various extremist online forums, and Chesser told Morton that he expected the statement would “scare the kuffar.” Kuffar is an Arabic term, referring to an unbeliever, or disbeliever, in Islam.

Chesser was arrested on July 21, 2010, charged with providing material support to al Shabaab and later also pleaded guilty to communicating threats and soliciting violent extremists to desensitize law enforcement. Four days after Chesser’s arrest, Morton fled to Morocco, where he resided until his arrest on U.S. charges on May 26, 2011.

In his statement of facts, Morton admitted that the Revolution Muslim websites contained the writings of and/or contributed to the radicalization of individuals who were inclined to engage in violence, including the following:

Samir Khan, previously of Charlotte, N.C., before moving to Yemen in 2009, was authorized by Morton to post materials on Revolution Muslim, and Morton provided Khan with two articles for the first two online editions of Jihad Recollections, an online magazine dedicated to violent extremism. In July 2010, Morton posted the first edition of Inspire magazine, an English-language magazine supporting al Qaeda that Morton believed to be the product of Khan. The magazine included an eight-page article titled “Make a bomb in the kitchen of Your Mom,” with detailed instructions regarding the construction of an explosive device.

Bilal Zaheer Ahmad, of the United Kingdom, was provided the password to Revolution Muslim by Morton and given permission to post messages. In November 2010, Ahmad praised Roshonara Choundhry for attempting to kill a British member of parliament over his support for the Iraq war and posted a list of 383 members of parliament who had voted for the Iraq war, along with suggestions on how to get in to see them and a link to a store selling a weapon similar to that used in Choundhry’s attack. Ahmad told Morton that the purpose of the post was to “make those MPs fearful.”

Abdel Hameed Shehedah, a former resident of Staten Island, N.Y., who was charged in October 2010 of making false statements involving his alleged attempt to travel to Pakistan to join a fighting group such as the Taliban. The statement of facts states that Shehedah attended Revolution Muslim meetings, made his website, civiljihad.com, a feeder site for Revolution Muslim and eventually arranged for all visitors to his website be routed automatically to Revolution Muslim.com.

Rezwan Ferdaus, of Ashland, Mass., was charged in September 2011 with plotting to attack the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol using large remote controlled aircraft filled with C-4 plastic explosives. The statement of facts states that in February 2010, Ferdaus e-mailed Morton asking for counsel regarding his duties as a Muslim and whether martyrdom operations were proper practice. Morton replied that martyrdom operations must be judged by intention but can have “enormous benfits (sic) in a war of attrition.”

Colleen R. LaRose, aka “Jihad Jane,” of Montgomery County, Pa., was charged in March 2010 with a variety of terrorism-related offenses, including plotting to kill Lars Vilks, a Swedish cartoonist who has been the subject of several murder threats based on his artwork depicting Muhammad. According to the statement of facts, Morton notified Sheikh Abdullah Faisal, a Muslim cleric convicted in the United Kingdom of soliciting murder, that LaRose was a subscriber to Revolution Muslim YouTube accounts.

Antonio Benjamin Martinez, of Baltimore, Md., was arrested and charged with plotting to bomb a military recruiting station in December 2010. The statement of facts states that one month prior to his arrest, Martinez viewed a video of Osama bin Laden and multiple terror training camp video clips on the Revolution Muslim website.

Jose Pimental, of New York City, was arrested and charged in November 2011 in connection with a plot to build and use a bomb to assassinate members of the U.S. military returning from active duty in Afghanistan. According to the statement of facts, Pimental contacted Morton saying that he was a big fan of Revolution Muslim, and that Morton recommended that Pimentel stay away from an individual because “there is high probability that he is working for the FBI.”

Mohamed Hamoud Alessa and Carlos Eduardo Almonte, both of New Jersey, were arrested in June 2010 on their way to Somalia to join a terrorist organization to kill individuals whose beliefs and practices did not accord with their ideology. The statement of facts states that both Alessa and Almonte were associates of Morton’s within the Revolution Muslim organization, and Morton was interviewed by investigators from the New York City Police Department on the day of their arrest.

This investigation is being conducted by the FBI’s Washington Field Office and the New York Police Department’s Intelligence Division. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Gordon D. Kromberg and Karen L. Dunn of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia and Trial Attorney John T. Oregon Resident Convicted in Plot to Bomb Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

U.S. Department of Justice
January 31, 2013

Office of Public Affairs

PORTLAND, OR—After a 14-day trial, Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 21, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Somalia and resident of Corvallis, Oregon, was convicted today by a federal jury in the District of Oregon of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction (explosives) in connection with a plot to detonate a vehicle bomb at an annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland.

At sentencing, Mohamud faces a maximum statutory sentence of life in prison. Mohamud was arrested on November 26, 2010, after he attempted to detonate what he believed to be an explosives-laden van that was parked near the tree lighting ceremony in Portland. The arrest was the culmination of a long-term undercover operation, during which Mohamud was monitored closely for months as his bomb plot developed. The device was in fact inert, and the public was never in danger from the device.

“When an individual concocts a plan to commit mass violence—and is determined to follow through—law enforcement has an obligation to take action to protect the public. Today’s verdict shows that they will be held to account,” said Lisa Monaco, Assistant Attorney General for National Security. “I applaud all those who worked so diligently to thwart this plot and ensure no one was harmed.”

“This trial provided a rare glimpse into the techniques al Qaeda employs to radicalize home-grown extremists. With the verdict today, the jury has held this defendant accountable,” said Amanda Marshall, U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon. “I thank the dedicated professionals in the law enforcement and intelligence communities who were responsible for this successful outcome. I look forward to our continued work with Muslim Communities in Oregon who are committed to ensuring that all young people are safe from extremists who seek to radicalize others to engage in violence.”

“The verdict returned in the Mohamed Mohamud case highlights the difficult but important work that FBI employees do every day. Whether an employee is an undercover agent or analyst or technician—each has a role to play in keeping our community safe while at the same time respecting the freedoms that make this country strong. Indeed, in this country everyone has a right to live, work and worship freely and without fear. FBI employees—in Oregon and around the world—find strength in preserving and protecting these core values,” said Gregory Fowler, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Portland Division.

According to court documents and evidence presented by the government at trial, in February 2009, Mohamud began communicating via e-mail with Samir Khan, a now-deceased al Qaeda terrorist who published Jihad Recollections, an online magazine that advocated violent jihad, and who also published Inspire, the official magazine of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. Between February and August 2009, Mohamed exchanged approximately 150 e-mails with Khan. Mohamud wrote several articles for Jihad Recollections that were published under assumed names.

In August 2009, according to evidence presented at trial, Mohamud was in e-mail contact with Amro Al-Ali, a Saudi national who was in Yemen at the time and is today in custody in Saudi Arabia for terrorism offenses. Al-Ali sent Mohamud detailed e-mails designed to facilitate Mohamud’s travel to Yemen to train for violent jihad. In December 2009, while Al-Ali was in the northwest frontier province of Pakistan, Mohamud and Al-Ali discussed the possibility of Mohamud traveling to Pakistan to join Al-Ali in terrorist activities. Mohamud responded to Al-Ali in an e-mail: “yes, that would be wonderful, just tell me what I need to do.” Al-Ali referred Mohamud to a second associate overseas and provided Mohamud with a name and e-mail address to facilitate the process.

In the following months, Mohamud made several unsuccessful attempts to contact Al-Ali’s associate. Ultimately, an FBI undercover operative contacted Mohamud via e-mail under the guise of being an associate of Al-Ali’s. Mohamud and the FBI undercover operative agreed to meet in Portland in July 2010. At the meeting, Mohamud told the FBI undercover operative he had written articles that were published in Jihad Recollections. Mohamud also said that he wanted to become “operational.” Asked what he meant by “operational,” Mohamud said he wanted to put an explosion together but needed help.

According to evidence presented at trial, at a meeting in August 2010, Mohamud told undercover FBI operatives he had been thinking of committing violent jihad since the age of 15. Mohamud then told the undercover FBI operatives that he had identified a potential target for a bomb: the annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square on November 26, 2010. The undercover FBI operatives cautioned Mohamud several times about the seriousness of this plan, noting there would be many people at the event, including children, and emphasized that Mohamud could abandon his attack plans at any time with no shame. Mohamud indicated the deaths would be justified and that he would not mind carrying out a suicide attack on the crowd.

According to evidence presented at trial, in the ensuing months Mohamud continued to express his interest in carrying out the attack and worked on logistics. On November 4, 2010, Mohamud and the undercover FBI operatives traveled to a remote location in Lincoln County, Oregon, where they detonated a bomb concealed in a backpack as a trial run for the upcoming attack. During the drive back to Corvallis, Mohamud was asked if he was capable of looking at all the bodies of those who would be killed during the explosion. In response, Mohamud noted, “I want whoever is attending that event to be, to leave either dead or injured.” Mohamud later recorded a video of himself, with the assistance of the undercover FBI operatives, in which he read a statement that offered his rationale for his bomb attack.

On November 18, 2010, undercover FBI operatives picked up Mohamud to travel to Portland to finalize the details of the attack. On November 26, 2010, just hours before the planned attack, Mohamud examined the 1,800 pound bomb in the van and remarked that it was “beautiful.” Later that day, Mohamud was arrested after he attempted to remotely detonate the inert vehicle bomb parked near the Christmas tree lighting ceremony.

This case was investigated by the FBI, with assistance from the Oregon State Police, the Corvallis Police Department, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and the Portland Police Bureau. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ethan D. Knight and Pamala Holsinger from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon. Trial Attorney Jolie F. Zimmerman, from the Counterterrorism Section of the Justice Department’s National Security Division, is assisting.

“Jury Rejects Entrapment Defense in Portland Plot”
by IPT News • Feb 1, 2013 at 12:52 pm

SNIPPET: “Mohamud was arrested inside a parked car as thousands of people gathered in Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square for an annual Christmas tree lighting. He pressed buttons he thought would trigger an 1,800-pound truck bomb nearer to the crowd. But FBI agents controlled the bomb’s construction and ensured it was inert.

FBI agents were drawn to him after Mohamud wrote four articles for Jihad Recollections, an online magazine, and posted on other jihadi web sites. In addition, before he tried repeatedly to go to Yemen for training in jihad, prosecutors said.

And the bombing wasn’t their idea. During his first meeting with an FBI undercover agent, Mohamud rejected non-violent ideas, choosing instead to serve “the cause of radical, violent Islamic jihad,” prosecutors said. Mohamud said that he wanted to “wage war.” He told the undercover he wanted to be “operational,” explaining he wanted to build a bomb.

Islamist activists and others have criticized sting operations like the Mohamud case, accusing the FBI of manufacturing terrorists who otherwise would pose no risk. That defense has not been persuasive in court.”
