Gates’s Misconceived Trip to Beijing

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has just arrived in Beijing on a three-day trip to mend ties with the People’s Liberation Army. His visit will end up being counterproductive. Beijing broke off mil-to-mil relations with the United States last January to protest the sale of $6.4 billion of military equipment to Taiwan. Soon afterward, Chinese...began making extremely belligerent comments in public. In February, for instance, Colonel Meng Xianging promised a “hand-to-hand fight with the U.S.” sometime within the next 10 years “when we’re strong enough.” ...

In May, at the Strategic and Economic Dialogue in Beijing, Rear Admiral Guan Youfei indulged himself in a three-minute rant that stunned the 65 or so American officials in the audience. Everything right with Sino-U.S. relations is due to China, said Guan, and everything wrong is Washington’s fault....

Ignoring the tirades, Gates arranged briefings in December for General Ma Xiaotian, deputy chief of the PLA’s general staff. Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Michele Flournoy said the briefings, on U.S. nuclear, space, and ballistic missile defense policies, are of the type “we gave our closest allies.”

Why be concerned with WikiLeaks when the secretary of defense is rushing to give sensitive information to the only great power preparing to kill Americans? The justification for doing so is that the Chinese will reciprocate. Yet they have in fact not responded in kind after years of essentially one-way transfers of information and know-how from the United States to China, and Gates on this trip will not see any military facility not previously opened to U.S. officials. ...

We shouldn’t be chasing after the Chinese to establish military ties; they should be coming to us...We are, in effect, pleading with the Chinese for opportunities to develop their military so that they can fight us better....

“The justification for doing so is that the Chinese will reciprocate.”

How? In the areas of nuclear, space, and ICBM's, what the h*ll can they give back of equal or greater value? Participating in a few more Treasury auctions to keep us afloat for awhile before pulling the plug on life support.

Forrest Gump could run this country better...

We are being betrayed and sold out by our own government. This has been going on since the Clinton administration. Where is Congress in all this?

Our only defensive edge is/was high tech superior weapons. When the chinese load up their vast military with comparable armament, we will be facing a determined and overwhelming force.

The chinese, at one point in history, were poised to control half the globe, their navy, invincible, sailed with impunity. Our history is short, with shortsighted leaders. The chinese have bought many of them because we elect weak and shallow people.

IMHO, the chinese are planning the next 500 years, our leaders are planning only their retirement portfolio.

Gates:..............”is your new DF-21 missle designed to target our aircraft carriers?

President Hu:.......”of course not”

Gates:..............”I see you have a new stealth fighter?”

President Hu:.......”long pause.... Ya. Whats your next question?

Gates:..............”ok”

President Hu:.......”thanks for coming. Have a nice trip back”

Yep. Occasionally, on FR, someone posts a stunningly true thing. You just did.

Don’t forget this too:
Lenin said he would hang the Capitalists with rope that he purchased from them. He did not. But, the Chinese just might do it, vis a’ vis Wally World, Tar-Jay and etc.....

Poisoned pet food and knock-off Nikes.

Frowning takes 68 muscles.
Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.
