My Brother Died of the Flu at Age 49

Posted on 03/06/2011 7:06:34 AM PST by big black dog

How can this happen in 2011? I was just talking with him 3 weeks ago about possibly going bass fishing with him in Mexico this Spring.

Seems he checked into the hospital about a week ago complaining of respiratory troubles after contracting the flu. They released him shortly after. He posted on his Facebook page at that time about how it sucks being sick, and how good it would be just to walk 20 feet without gasping for breath.

2 days later, hie son and ex-wife found him dead in bed.

I am stunned. He was in good health. No one that age is supposed to die of the flu.

The last time I had a flu shot was 40 years ago when the Army made me take it. I promptly came down with the flu right afterwards. Haven’t had a flu shot since and haven’t had the flu either.

I sympathize with you. I lost a brother - and fellow freeper - at the age of 42 from a sudden heart attack.

Time will heal most of the feelings of grief, however the memories will always be with you.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

A medical answer to your question should require some testing.

I don’t think its the flu... It must be something more than that, time to see if the doctor who checked him out took any blood sample. I believe it is more than a flu.

I am so sorry. What a shock it must be to all of you who love him.

I want you to research something. There is a very rare drug intolerance for Ibuprofen (Advil) that can develop suddenly or over time. I experienced this and it nearly killed me.

It is called aphylaxis. If your body starts rejecting Ibuprofen (for example), and you keep taking it as though nothing is wrong, it can kill you by shutting down your lungs and heart.

What makes me suspicious are these facts: 1) it was sudden and unexpected; 2) the breathing was already unusually laborious; and 3) the flu often has aches that send people running for the Advil.

Please check into this. Many doctors don’t even know about it. My intolerance for Ibuprofen didn’t set in until I had used it for 17 years!

I’m so sorry for your loss. It does happen and sometimes much slower. I contracted the flu approximately 10 years ago. My immune system began attacking my lungs. After several diagnoses of pheumonia over just a couple of months, they accidentally caught a glimpse of the bottom of my lungs in a CTscan while testing for something else. They were all scarred up. Thank God for steroids, that is what is keeping me alive today. BTW, I’m only 48 now.

Sounds like the flu turned into bronchitis then pneumonia. Did the hospital give him a prescription for antibiotics?

Very sorry for your loss.
Clearly if he could not walk 20 feet something was going on, but it could be a number of possibilities.
