"Torchwood" dissing the Tea Party? (Vanity)
Starz network ^ | July 29, 2011

Posted on 07/30/2011 1:18:55 PM PDT by pillut48

Did anyone else catch the sci-fi show dissing the Tea Party last night? Little background: Torchwood is a spin-off of the old British tv series Doctor Who, (Torchwood is an anagram of Doctor Who) only more gritty and sadly, with VERY adult situations at times ...this year the series apparently was bought out by Starz and brought to America and is quite Americanized now. The current storyline is called "Miracle Day" when no one dies, no matter what. No miracle healings, just no deaths. You can just imagine some of the grisly outcomes from this phenomena!

The storyline itself is very compelling, kind of a "Torchwood/24" blend, keeps your attention by itself, so I wish the producers/writers would keep the gratuitous sex out of it (channel changing time, only once so far, hope they stop!) because it's just so totally not necessary for the story/plot at all. Sadly for some folks, the connection to the Doctor Who universe is broken, this new version is more of a reality show where I can't imagine Daleks suddenly showing up to conquer the planet like the previous versions.

Anyway, last night's episode was talking about the 'overflow' people--the old people in nursing homes, the infirm/paralyzed/comatose, etc. patients, the unwanted drug addicted, unwanted elderly being cared for by adult children, unwanted babies who weren't dying but still needed lots and lots of specialized care that was pushing the health care systems around the world to the brink...they had a new character, a woman who started a movement called "Dead is Dead" who promoted the idea that these imperfect undying people should be isolated from the rest of humanity so they would stop 'wasting' precious dwindling resources...to be put into basically concentration camps "for their own good" until the day came that death caught up with them again...I was thinking, ewww, she's cold...right until another character, for plot exposition, explained..."She's the darling of the Tea Party!!" SAY WHAT?!? :-O

Later on in the episode, when the real archvillains of the show THE EEEEEEEVVVVIIIILLLLL Pharmaceutical company Phicorp < insert scary ominous organ music here > is < spoilers > to her, someone explains that while they liked her style and charism, and she had the right idea about the overflow camps, they already had a representative for these ideas, an 'unexecuted' child molester/killer named Oswald Danes (Bill Pullman) and she was basically reduntant and....

So I guess the not so subtle point was that the Tea Party is as evil as the self serving "we're everywhere and you can't stop us" evil pharmaceutical company taking over the planet, but they'll get what they deserve in the end! Did I get that right???

Oh, forgot to mention there was also a throwaway comment that she was heading to FOX News for an interview at one point as well!! Another EEEEEEVVVVVIIILLLLL organization, I guess, for supporting the Tea Party!

Sounds like projection on a grand scale to me.

torchwood is hard left. it is *not* doctor who, though it is a spin-off

btw, they also ‘took out’ the Sarah Palin-like character (which was also a ‘darling of the tea party’). of course, they killed her for being too close to the truth

i stopped watching it after 3 or 4 episodes when the series started. i had hoped they had stopped the rampant homosexual propaganda with this latest incarnation. i was wrong. once i see the reason behind the big mystery, i’ll drop it again.

Torchwood is written by Russell Davis, a gay and one hell of a story writer. Captain Jack is a great but flawed hero, His defense of this planet is direct, brutal and non-negotiable. Davis is British and simply never got over the first Boston Tea Party(and never will).

I for one am glad Torchwood is back and I will watch every episode. Yes it is adult but the crap that is being peddled by the former SciFi channel is garbage. Bring back Firefly, Farscape and heck even Lex was better than most of the junk they have now. Rerererereruns of the Twilight Zone? Please. TNT has better SciFi in Falling Skies.

Gwen is hot!!!

Interesting! You thought the woman’s character was like Sarah Palin, I imagined she was patterned after Ann Coulter, with the hard, factual delivery of her talking points...I’ve never really seen Sarah Palin like that myself, but now that you mention it, yes, she had those characteristics as well.

Loving Fallen Skies here too, hope they don’t mess it up. SciFi (I refuse to use that stupid spelling) really jumped the shark years ago...for me the last straw was cancelling Stargate Universe just as it was getting really, really good! >:-(

I also love the character development of Captain Jack and Gwen...sadly, his character is 180 degrees opposite the funloving guy on DW...Gwen started out so meek and unsure of herself, but look at her now! I love that Rhys and Anwen are characters as well, even if they are mostly off screen...hope he gets a bigger part helping out back in Wales now that there’s a crisis there!

You have to realise that the writer of TOrchwood doesn’t seem to understand, or care, about our political realities, or our legal ones for that matter.

They portrayed a “tea party” leader who essentially wanted to force sick people into death camps. Well, that’s really a liberal idea, especially the part where it was a government-run program.

They also have a serious crisis, and the white house hasn’t even “made a speech”. They obviously don’t understand that our president makes speeches all the time on everything.

They also said that our legal system would allow a person on death row to get out of prison free and clear if the attempt to carry out the penalty failed. We have clear legal precedent that people will be kept in prison in that circumstance until the state is successful.

Of course, they have a nation falling in love with a death-row inmate who raped and murdered a 12-year-old girl, and joked about it. OK, I know sometimes murderes are exalted by the left — but this guy is an old white guy, not a cool black rapper. So that is unrealistic.

So really, rather than feeling “dissed” by the “tea party” woman, it made me laugh, as it was such a bizarre caractiture. Anyway, it’s not like they made her look like any real person. And they also killed her at the end of the show (well, since nobody is dying, they didn’t really kill her, which was kind of creepy, but whatever).

Of course.
Writers are hired these days not to write good stories but to ‘weave social engineering tales into the script to influence opinion’.
Recall how they stuffed pro-homosexual agenda crap into Enterprise, Caprica, etc etc.

Just tell a story darn it, don’t preach at me about your desire for your boyfriend!
Don’t preach at me about how my desire to keep more of my paycheck is evil and selfish, I earned it - not you writers!

/ rant off

If it is the PR lady from the Phicor pharmaceutical company then she is the one dressed in red all of the time. Where ever you have the Red, Leftist, collectivist ideologues concentration camps aren’t far away. Nazi Germany, the defunct Soviet Union, China, North Korea et all have had or still have them.

The Leftist script writers are just psychologically projecting what is in their hearts onto those who are for freedom and liberty. It’s called vilification, character assassination, name calling, libeling, and any other word related to those. Same stuff, different day.

I saw some of the British series and didn't much care for it.

It looked like Thunderbirds with (slightly) less wooden actors.

Dr Who has always been far left. I mean, REALLY far left.

And the guy who stars in Torchwood is a gay guy who is a strong advocate for gay “marriage”.

Dr who is cute, has some interesting storylines, but TW is just too adult for my tastes - too much weird sex stuff.

I liked ‘Torchwood’ during its first three seasons and up to ‘Children Of Earth’. Could not see the reasoning for killing off Owen (Who I didn’t care for in the first place), Toshiko (The Brains and heart of Torchwood). Or Ianto, Jack’s proper Tea Boy.

The new ‘Miracle Day’ is just plain annoying! Have no use at all for Oswald, the child molester played by Bill Pullman. Have even less use for Rex, the whiny, b*tchy, blame everybody but himself, CIA loudmouth played by the no-talented Mehki Pfifer.

The writing is lame with plot holes you could drive a Semi through and whatever ‘Chemistry’ there was between John Barrowman’s Jack Harkness and Eve Myles Gwen Cooper has long since evaporated.

My guess is that the Big Pharma/Bad Guy Corporation made a deal with the 459 race of aliens from ‘Children Of Earth’ to create Harvesting Camps and have an Earth compliant and helpless for the taking and colonization.

Just my two cents.

I watch the show also, and the tea party/fox news alignment with those who would isolate the sick, elderly and dying was very obvious. This is now the second time that they have screwed with my brain. The first being when Jack went to a gay bar and picked up another......man. Why must they mix politics and entertainment? I do know the answer, but it is disgusting being unable to lose yourself in plots and characters, when they yank you back to the unpleasant realities of our time, the queers and political divisions.

The first 2 episodes were good but the past 2 have sucked. Everything is being drawed out and too many storylines are being introduced with no purpose.

If the next episode isn’t any better, I am going to stop watching a few episodes and wait for ep 9. It seems like too much filler to stretch out the premise of no one dying and its starting to get boring.

I think Russell Davis is a hack personally. He introduces gay and freakish elements when they are not needed and adds gloomy and anti-religious elements into the storyline all the time.

I am not so much offended as just annoyed. The Torchwood idea could be done so much better without all the crap slopped on.

I agree Gwen looks hot this year.

Jilly Kitzinger(Lauren Ambrose) is the lady in red who shows up everywhere with her business card. Mare Winningham (who also wore a red business suit dress) played ‘the darling of the Tea Party’ Ellis Hartley Monroe. Two different characters unrelated to each other, but apparently according to Davies, on the same side looking for ways to deceive the human race. ::rolls eyes::

That was in the third episode this season when Jack ran off to the Gay bar. The first two were rolling along and then Jack just has to have a gay night. They juxtaposed it with the black CIA guy and white woman just to make sure you get the drift.

That episode and this past one have just slowed to to crawl with little new progress made of the overall plot.

I believe it was the second episode where there was a large meeting of doctors discussing ‘The New Triage’ and the topic of aborted babies arose.

With one large, white bespectacled guy arguing for the rights of the fetus. And a female doctor made a quip: “I was born Catholic, but got over it.”

Which had nothing really to do with the discussion. Just a throwaway line to shut up the Pro-Life doctor.

I don’t know if this is considered ‘Edgy’ writing, but it’s
more of a cheap, easy shot.

Just sayin’.

Jack.
