Like many, I was extremely hopeful when Obama won in 2008. And like many Ive become totally disillusioned with the president and the political process. The debt ceiling fiasco is yet another illustration of Obamas failures, not just because its a betrayal of his base and the American people, but because it further calls into question whether hes a total fraud.
In Winner Take-all Politics, political scientists Jacob Hacker and Paul Pierson argue that if Obama had his way his first year in office would have rivaled FDRs infamous first 100 days as a juggernaut of reform. The book, which offers an excellent analysis of how big business has completely hijacked the political system, leaves the reader with hope. It describes how corporate lobbyists have used the Republican Party to sabotage the political process and choke off all prospects for change. Hacker and Pierson claim that Obama may prove the first step in the direction of serious reform, the kind we saw in the early twentieth century with the progressive movement, culminating in the New Deal.
But upon a closer examination of the record, it becomes apparent that Obamas intentions are not pure. It is true that the right has worked extremely hard to crush any Obama initiative, even those they would certainly have welcomed if they had been proposed by a Republican, such as health care reform, which is really a nation-wide version of Mitt Romneys Massachusetts plan. As such, when it comes to measures such as the public option or eliminating the big banks, we can only blame Obama for not trying hard enough and perhaps being weak in the face of fierce Republican opposition. True he should have used his speaking skills to rally the public behind real reform, and the fact that he didnt even though polls show the public supports universal healthcare and an end to Wall Street tyranny suggests he had an ulterior agenda. But its hard to gauge his sincerity with any certainty in those cases.
Nevertheless, when we consider how he has governed in areas that are entirely under his control its hard to avoid the fact that he has pursued extremely right-wing, dangerous policies. You can learn a lot about Obamas true intentions by listening to Rep. Luis Gutierrez recent interview on democracynow! He explains how years ago Obama gave a rousing speech about how in his first year as president he would fix the broken immigration system and the crowd went wild. During Obamas first year in office Gutierrez sat down with the President for a little over an hour to discuss using his presidential powers to give a workers permit to the million or so eligible immigrants and prevent children from losing their parents and the destruction of families in many other forms. When Obama failed to act Gutierrez sent him a letter urging him to fulfill his promise. The president replied with a disingenuous letter claiming he does not have the power. Shortly after Gutierrez sat with Obama in the Oval office and was told Luis, we will not have an opportunity or the ability to pass any comprehensive immigration reform til after my reelection as president of the United States we wont be able to have the numbers.
Another case in point is Obamas economic advisers. It is completely up to Obama to choose who will determine economic policy. He does not need Congressional approval. And yet who does he choose? People like Geithner and Summers, the architects of the deregulation policies that created the housing bubble. Obama could have appointed people like Paul Krugman and Joseph Stiglitz, but he decided not to. This is entirely consistent with his decision to take massive campaign contributions from Wall Street.
Likewise, when it comes to the military, Obama has opted to extend Bushs war policies in ways that are extremely frightening. We are now seeing the fruits of Bushs unilateralism and aggression. Obama could have ended the disastrous imperial expansion in the Middle East. Instead he has vastly enlarged it. He chose to dramatically increase the use of drone strikes in Pakistan, which according to a photographer who has visited the scenes of many attacks, kill maybe one militant for every fifteen civilians, an outcome that will no doubt further swell the ranks of global jihad organizations. It is Obama who has opted to send over 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan and pump billions into maintaining massive military bases and subverting the will of the people in Iraq. It is Obama who decided without Congressional approval to bomb Libya. And it is Obama who has started proxy wars in Yemen and Somalia, where, at the behest of our president, America has set uptorture chambers akin to Guantanamo, which still has not been closed.
This troubling phenomenon extends into virtually every facet of his presidency. Consider nuclear weapons in the context of Iran and Israel. America could lead the international community in ridding the world of nuclear weapons. Instead Obama, after signing a meaningless treaty with Russia which leaves the United States with thousands of warheads in its possession, has failed to follow Irans lead and sign a nuclear-weapons-free-zone treaty in the Middle East.
For all the propaganda about how we must stop Iran from acquiring the bomb at all costs,Iran has signed the treaty and Obama has not only refused to join them and the international community, but he has permitted allies to continue to develop nuclear weapons without being burdened by international monitors. If he were at all serious about ending Irans bid for an atomic bomb and avoiding an arms race in the Middle East, he would join the international consensus and sign, together with allies Israel, Turkey and Pakistan, an NWFZ for the Middle East. But he has other priorities. He obviously considers it more important to continue the standard strategy of using force to intimidate all who resist the imperial project, resorting to outright war in many cases, and in Iran sanctions for now and very likely a strike by Israel in the not-too-distant future, which could create a World War III scenario with nuclear weapons.
But what about the debt ceiling catastrophe? Is that all his fault too, or was he merely a victim of tea party extremism? On the surface it appears the situation was out of his control because Congress was involved. But in truth Obama could have refused to participate in this manufactured crisis. He could have demanded that the debt ceiling be raised as a condition for avoiding a government shutdown in December, but he opted not to, saying he presumed the Republicans would not risk a default. He also could have unilaterally solved the problem through many different legal maneuvers, such as the 14thAmendment.
But it seems he wanted this pseudo-crisis as much as the Republicans did, which is why he let it happen. The entire episode was obviously political theatre. Everyone in positions of power benefitted. Only the American people were harmed. It was clear there would be no default because the corporations didnt want it since it would damage their bottom line. Its no surprise that the Chamber of Commerce ordered the Republicans to make a deallast week.
But the drama created many opportunities for the powerful to further consolidate their grip. The corporations, who own both parties, and the Republicans won because they not only used a phony crisis to squeeze the public with trillions in cuts, but they have also set the public up for future cuts in Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. We may have compromised and only cut discretionary spending this time, but next we will have to cut the big three if we are serious about the deficit. What remains unspoken is the fact that the corporations are responsible for and benefit from running huge deficits because it means less in taxes for them, and because they are the ones who finance most of the debt by lending to the government and charging interest.
Obama has also benefitted from this. True, he has further alienated his base, but who cares? His strategy, from day one, has clearly been to convince independents and the left that hes at least not as bad as the Republicans. And the debt ceiling crisis offered him an opportunity to further illustrate his moderation: we may have cut trillions without raising taxes on the rich, but imagine if Paul Ryan were able to destroy Medicare, that wont happen under my watch. And on it goes.
Michael Moore is a fraud — Obama is a communist.
Yeap, Michael Moore should make documentary with the very title of the article...
If you want a purely Leftist point of view that is the place to get one.
Haha Michael Moore is so disillusioned and misguided. Can’t read his drivel, the only happy feeling I get is that he is unhappy with Obama.
Don’t know how to quote, but when he says “Obama has pursued extreme right-wing plans, lol okay Michael, remove head from ass.
I could not finish the article.
“Marc Adler” was the author but michaelmoore.com approved it!
I’m a recent graduate of NYUs Gallatin School of Individualized Study, and a freelance journalist who runs a blog, The Bloody Crossroads.
My name is Marc Adler. I’m a recent graduate of NYUs Gallatin School of Individualized Study and a freelance journalist who runs a blog, The Bloody Crossroads. My goal is to explain how state/corporate power controls our society and is destroying civilization, and why we must radically change our attitudes towards the political system and mass media. Many articles I write rely on scholarly sources to discuss broader issues, such as American empire and corporate abuse, others analyze bias/propaganda in the mass media, and many are interview-based pieces designed to personalize and dramatize the horrifying costs of unfettered capitalism.

You did well. I could not get past the title and had to spray myself with lysol (knowing it was of Michael Moore)
What frauds. Destruction of America is their game; so don’t believe what they say. They want us to get mad so all we will talk about is how shocked we are instead of concentrating on getting good people elected. They want us off the mark.
Run, Fat Boy, Run.
This is one of the biggest lies from the left.
Banking and housing WERE NOT deregulated! There are and were thousands of pages of regulations. It has never been more regulated but the Government, to promote "diversity" forced financial institutions to lend money to people who could not afford the mortgages.
The politicians knew these mortgages were going to go under and take the economy with it.
It is pathetic. Not in the least serious. Micheal Moore is a jerk, and all around him become buffoons.
Good God; how disgusting.
Alder doesn’t seem to grasp the obvious - that Baraq Obama is totally incompetent, and wholly unqualified to hold the office of President. It really is that simple, but these leftists are in denial that they couldn’t see this back in 2007-2008.
Ahh... is that what happened!
Wall St. donates the Majority of Money to Democrats,The Banks have received Triilions form Obama. Obama had Complete Control of the Government a 60 seat Majority in the Senate,The Lefty Queen in Charge in the House pelosi,They did not decide to fix the Debt Problem on the Contrary after Campaigning on George Bush Driving us into a Ditch of debt ,Pelosi said we Have to make up for 8 Years of Bush not spending enough and Now you are seeing the result. I dont know what thses Marxists are Complaining about, instead of Blaming the republicans they should be Taking Credit for Achieving their Goal of destroying the Country. They have achieved their Dream everyone is going to be equal, equallly Miserable. But of Course there will be some who are more equal than others
His hyperventilating "Ooo -- look! A conspiracy!" genre is tired and stale, and the unfolding of events and unraveling of its champions reveal how ludicrous and sophmoric Moore's arguments were.
MM -- Michael Moore, or "Massive Mediocrity"?
He is still struggling to remain relevant at a point in U.S. history which begins to unveil the fraudulence of his position and ideology.
What used to be contempt for his ignorance has become pity for his condition.
