The photo showing the bond between felled Navy SEAL Jon Tomlinson and his dog Hawkeye has captured the attention of the Web.

The soldier was one of 38 killed in Afghanistan on Aug. 6 when a rocket-propelled grenade took out a U.S. Chinook helicopter. He was mourned at a service in Rockford, Iowa, attended by 1,500 family members and friends, and Tomlinson's loyal canine companion.

Friends at Special Operations Command in Tampa informed me that although those killed in the Chinook shoot-down were also members of Special Warfare Development Group, or DevGru (known to public as SEAL Team 6), they were not members of the strike team that got bin Laden. I initially thought they were because of the information in the MSM. As far as my friends know, almost all the members of the strike team had returned to the States by August 6.

There was a very nice, touching thread last night on this story.

Here is a link to the animals in war memorial erected in London (only the Brits would think of this!). A very beautiful memorial to those who “had no choice.”

Don’t bet on that.

One of my Ibizan Hounds, Izzy was one of the best watch dogs I ever had and they’re not that far from Greys.

:)

I sleep like the dead because Odin literally lays with his head across my stomach all night and Gypsy, the little Portuguese Podengo spends most of the night laying on the chest in front of the window...watching and listening.

Good dogs.

God bless and accept this man into your arms. Give his family comfort, and that includes his loyal dog.

Wow.

That would really be low. We had a thread going last night on this story and everyone who came was lovely. The best of FR (well, not me, of course).

I HAVE to believe they do throwback. I can’t imagine a heaven without our wonderful animal friends. RIP Jon Tomlinson and I pray your wonderful dedicated dog will get the loving and caring home he deserves. :(

I hope the “it’s just an animal” crowd at FR will have the decency to stay off this thread.

I don't think I'd go so far as to put myself with that group, but it's pretty hard to believe that the dog doesn't know what's happened, some way or another, and is deeply saddened by it.

Link's broken...<(

Here's this, instead.

The Dobermann on the memorial is Kurt, the first dog to die on Guam, after he silently alerted his platoon of 250 soldiers to a hidden enemy machine gun nest, thereby saving all of their lives.

Kurt and his handler were seriously wounded.

The handler survived but Kurt succumbed to his injuries at 3AM that night.

I totally agree with you.

Someone convinced the fraud schmuck that sacrificing a serious group of SEALs would prevent the great wrath of Hussein’s god from visiting even more violence against us.

Hussein would do ANYTHING against America.

All right, but I’m guessing Hussein figures killing off a bunch (any bunch) of SEALs would keep his handlers from being too mad.

I don’t trust a traitor on anything.

You and me both Owl_Eagle. Those of us who adore animals know they’re just not animals. They give us comfort, joy and companionship. This time last year we had 1 dog......this year we have 4 total. 2 of the sweetest Pugs and 1 beautiful Chug needed homes very badly.....viola! They have it. I’m thankful to God that He has allowed us to give them the proper care and love that they ALL deserve. :)

Where is this statue? Guam? Lovely.

Check out the animals in war memorial on your own - you’ll like it.

Now, I don’t have any money in this show but here’s a link to the beautiful and patriotic British play “War Horse” currently tearing up Broadway.

I bet it works both way and that Jon Tomlinson is pining away for his furry friend right now.

Yes, it’s in Guam.

I wish I could get up there to see that play.

Keep an eye on TV and see if you can catch the special on WWII dogs.

You’ll cry right along with the men who worked alongside them.

Thank you for the link. I had no idea that there was a War Dog memorial. And to think they were given graves! The War Horses of WWI were - after their service - all sold off and slaughtered for their meat. The French and Germans were hungry but it seems very sad.

Thanks for that info. I remember hearing, at the time the helio shoot-down was reported, that the guys were special forces and possibly from the team that got UBL.

I remember being very suspicious about such info being released. Wondered if it was not payback for the mohammedans from Dear Leader to release such details.
