Which Republican Candidate Has Been The Best Debater?
Elephant Watcher ^ | September 22, 2011

"Tonight's debate was Rick Perry's last chance to prove that he can get through a debate without taking damage. By the end of the debate, the verdict was somewhat clear. Perry did not make any major stumbles, but he was damaged more than he was helped by the debate. As a result, it seems likely that future debates will be more harmful to Perry than helpful. One more debate might not make much difference, but there are many more of them to come...."

I’m liking Newt more & more. Newt/Cain might be our best ticket.

WE have a smooth talker in the WH now....How’s that workin’ for us?????

I am tired of elections turning on how well the candidate looks and speaks.

I am not impressed with smooth talkers, they remind me of used car salesmen.

1, 2, 3, 4 ... Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Mitt Romney

I would prefer to see them in an actual debate before answering.

But as for the person who consistently shows the greatest breadth and depth of thought, it’s Newt. Probably not electable, but the other candidates (throughout that farcical VP question) made it clear that they see him the smartest guy in the room.

Newt sounds good, but he is LOUSY when he gains a leadership role.

A Newt/Cain ticket would mean a landslide for Obama and be about as stupid an idea as a Huntsman/Paul ticket.

Yup. Gingrich is the smartest guy up there by a factor of ten, Romney looked decisive and sounded specific even if he was lying, Cain is the winner of the plain-spoken English award. Perry sucked canal water.

Gingrich is the best debater with Cain a close second. Unfortunately, Perry was a disappointment tonight.

Sometimes a person appears to be a smooth talker because he or she is prepared and has genuine knowledge of the subject matter.

I agree. Newt consistently has intelligent, cogent, and historically-based answers that sound Presidential. Cain has good ideas, and doesn’t come across like Paul, who’s a bit too whacky for my tastes. Romney has not shot himself in the foot, but his past record belies his current rhetoric.

Newt is the best debater, but I don’t like his pro-Fed stance.

Nothing to do with my preferences, just answering the debate performance issue IMO:

Gingrich has won the over all debates by far. Romney has been good to very good consistently and tonight was his best. Bachmann seems to have been a one debate wonder. Cain is improving and had an outstanding night. Huntsman had his first decent night. Santorum still looks desparate even though his words are often excellent. Perry is not good in debates.

Oh, Gary Johnson is awful but he had one fabulous moment tonight.

Well, I was going to post an answer, but you have already posted it . . . Gingrich, Romney, and Cain. Kudos!

Agreed. I was pulling hard for Perry but he was a train wreck. Newt is clearly the smartest guy up there and Cain the most charismatic. Changing my Tagline for the umpteenth time.

I'm smoking unadulterated Benson&Hedges 100s...you want one?

With all of the baggage Newtie has the the complete and utter lack of elected experience that is Cain's downfall and you believe that my post is wrong? The Dems and the MSM would demolish that ticket in 30 seconds.
