True, But I can see further than they can hear, then get some blue, indigo, or violet lights. Plus the cabin is a 50 miles from closest town on a dirt road.

Is there anything, any type of material, that can shield electronics from an EMP blast? I’m serious here, not asking a stupid question, Ihope.

Copper or aluminum screen/mesh does the trick.

Not a stupid question. Look up Faraday shield on your favorite search engine.

Post #39 was a link to “Ducked and Covered: A Survival Guide to the Post Apocalypse.” I haven’t had a chance to view the video yet, but it doesn’t seem dangerous to FR.

I just saw this article today on SHTFPLan.com, about refrigeration. There’s an embedded video from youtube, it’s simple, taking two terra cotta pots one inside another, with sand between them, with a damp towel over them, and can be used for keeping items cool (The video guy got down to the high 40’s, on a 92º day). Maybe worth a view.

Do a web search....you can protect things (smaller type things, like computers, radios, etc more easily)...I think it requires some copper wire, and a metal container, etc.

An EMP attack requires a heavy lifter.

Nyet, tovarich. Nukes are not required for local EMP attacks. They just make very big Electro-Magnetic Pulse.

There are several other ways to generate local EM pulses.

Really? That's interesting. Granted, copper is expensive but I wonder how practical it would be to install a copper or aluminum mesh in a housing structure? Definitely gonna keep this in mind if I'm ever able to build my own home.

I remember all the dumb a$$ books and articles predicting disaster for the millenium. You’d think Armageddon was to come.

The USA is NOT Argentina. The USA is NOT Europe. There are communities here that will pull through just fine. There may even be cities that pull through just fine, as well.

To me, it all depends on how quick BHO2 responds. If he is typical, and flubs up, most places will do well.

If BHO2 sees this as an opportunity to set up a dictatorship and start killing people a la African tyrants, then SHTF.

Something doesn't add up here.

If China, Russia, and the Norks (and let's face it, that means Iran) are working on enhanced-EMP nukes which can take out even hardened military systems...

What the hell good is the $20 billion on civilian infrastructure going to do?

Something isn't adding up in this piece.

Cheers!

Yup. It's called a "Faraday Cage". Basically, you have to completely surround it with a conductor and ground the conductor. There are some subtleties, but if you get a metal container which you can close tightly (no gaps), and solidly attach a heavy wire from the container to a good ground (water pipe? copper grounding rod?), that should work just fine.

The only problem is that anything you want to protect must be in the container when the bomb goes off. The assumption is that we'll have no warning, so plan on buying spares of everything you need to protect and putting them away until after you are sure that the danger has passed.

Of course it wouldn't solve all of the problems but anyone can protect their electronics from a power surge.

Except in the '70s, the power went out in NYC because of a solar flare that screwed up Canada's power lines.

And then, nobody's electronics worked because there wasn't any power.

But hey, that's just history.

Thanks, Got clay pots, I need some sand, weed, and some beer. The streams are real cold always. Then we party like it’s 1999!

Any Faraday cage like a tight enclosure, with the proper filters on wires that penetrate the enclosures.

The military spends big bucks on studying this, they have sine Starfish knocked out streetlights in a three block area of Hawaii (Starfish Prime).

Things to know when someday it Hits the Fan.

1. Big cities will become kill zones. Get out of them fast after loading everything you need to survive the longest you can.
2. Evil people without any fear of authority or restraint will become more evil.
3. Any gun is better than no gun as long as you have ammo
4. You’re going to run out of bullets, eventually.
5. A 22LR may be your best bet for survival. You can buy years worth of ammo now, for very little money. The report does not carry far, giving away your position. It will bring down any small game wild and domestic. (forget big game - they will vanish quickly). And every member of the family can shoot them. Yes you can still use your big bore for when it counts.
6. Be sure all members of the family know how to shoot that 22LR and they become good at it.
7. Learn how the Native Americans survived in your area. Food, medicine and shelter. Books can be found.

I got this thread bookmarked on my computer and I’m definitely gonna look into all this. Not that I want to compete for the “tin foil hat” award, but undertaking precautions to prevent a disaster is always prudent.
