For some of us the question might ought to be “have you ever shot someone?” and “have you ever killed anyone and if so was it face to face?” As a combat veteran I’ll let those who don’t have a clue guess the answer. Hint: it is something the veteran never ever forgets.

.... Until you have to, you do not know. Training helps, because you react with muscle memory. ....

You are correct. If it isn't an automatic instinct that comes with proper training and or former experience (such as in close combat) then your chances of survival in a confrontational situation with an armed intruder drops precipitously. Ones response could very well determine whether one would walk away unharmed or not. Hesitation to think about it would likely prove fatal for most people. It is easy to say that one would kill but when that person actually comes face to face with the deadly encounter they will never really know.

As the old saying goes, "it is easier said than done"!

Yes. Self-defense is not immoral. All living things are imbued with a sense of self-preservation, so why would going against that natural instinct ever be wrong? I am not looking for license to kill someone: I sleep in a “castle” with steel gates and barred windows. Two big dogs with an attitude sleep beside the bed. If those deterrents are not sufficient, the only question left is what kind of carpet cleaner I should use, because the caliber has already been chosen and deployed.

Apparently, the first time he's said that publically.

That's an interesting turn of events.

He has for several years now been going out of his way to extoll the virtues of Gandhi and MLKjr.

I wonder if the difference is that he has actually changed his mind, or if he's known all along and has just been trying to keep the lid on that pot, consistent with all his discussions on trying to bring the airplane down into the trees rather than directly into the face of the cliff.

I sepnt the money to give the Golden Sabres a try in my Glock 22. No problemo ... but then , it’s a Glock; they’ll eat anything. I run the same ammo in my Taurus OSS DS in .45 ACP. The Kel Tec 40 S&W will not cycle the Golden Sabres reliably, so I run regular copper jacketed through it, even though the mags are hi-cap Glocks.

I've thought long and hard about this and take strong moral and religious exception to harming another human being.
In that context, I decided that there are people in this world who need killing.

I have a saying in regards to this kind of thing- "human is as human does". Someone who would break into my house and harm my family is not a human, but a wild animal. Shooting a wild animal to protect my family is a no brainer.

I found out in an encounter a few decades ago. Three armed men decided to have some fun with what they thought was an unarmed couple in a very remote area. Ended up in a faceoff at about 15 feet, me with a hand on my holstered .357, and them caught flatfooted as they approached to molest the woman I was with. It may sound like a novel, but time froze as I waited to see if they would back off or reach for their guns. Fortunately for them they backed off immediately. There is no doubt I would have shot them if they reached for a weapon.

The Kel Tec 40 S&W

What's your view of Kel Tec, been looking real hard at their .308 Bull Pup semi-auto battle rifle.

Saw some good and bad reviews of Kel Tec iron.

Keep your hand on your gun.
Don’t you trust anyone.
There’s just one kind of man that you can trust,
that’s a dead man, or a gringo like me.

Be the first one to fire.
Every man is a liar.
There’s just one kind of man who tells the truth,
that’s a dead man, or a gringo like me.

I have experience with the Sub2000 in 9mm and 40S&W. Simple mechanisms, well made, very functional and durable. Sorry, I have no experience with the other Kel Tec products. Personally, I would not want a .308 round going off that close to my brain. Bull pup designs works well with five-sevens and pistol caliber rounds. I wouldn’t want one for larger calibers ... SBRs arethe better alternative, IMHO.

“War is about fightin’, and fightin’ means killin’”- Nathan Bedford Forrest.

I am a peaceful man, but if violence comes my way, I have already made up my mind that the most appropriate thing to do is to engage and destroy, or be destroyed myself. There is no guarantee of survival; but taking one’s own part guarantees there will be a chance.

Depends upon the dog. My mellow, essentially barkless, Golden Retriever would be no help whatsoever as a “security layer”.

I don’t think I could shoot an intruder, although I ran one off just by screaming at him 50 years ago when he broke into my apartment while my husband was outside with a neighbor looking at the neighbor’s car. He’d left the door ajar on a sunny Saturday morning.

I was putting sleeping bags away in a deep closet. When I climbed down off the ladder and turned around, there was this stranger standing in my dining room. I started to ask him what he wanted. As he stumbled and mumbled, trying to find an answer, visions flashed through my mind: intruder, inside my apartment, climbed my stairs, walked by my kitchen, my bedroom, the sleeping porch where my babies were napping, past the bathroom, through the living room, now standing in my DINING ROOM! That’s a long way into my personal space. Many clues that this was not community space. Not an accident.

As this “slide show” flashed through my mind, my voice rose and I moved toward him as I started shrieking for him to get out of my house. He sprinted toward the stairs, taking them 3 at a time, and vaulted off the front stoop and over the hedge out front. It was the vision of the sleeping kids that really got me going. He took off at a dead run and my husband and my neighbor’s heads popped out from under the hood of the car. They took off after him.

We caught him a block and a half away after he’d been routed from an elderly neighbor’s back porch where he was trying to break in to escape me and my wrath. Somebody called the cops; and when they arrived, they found that he had no ID and just a razor blade in his pocket. He was mumbling that he thought I was his sister and he was going to kill me. He was a mental patient off his meds and had entered the wrong apartment. He happened to be the son of a Communist attorney who was the law partner of the Commie lawyer where Hillary served her internship when she was at Yale.

But, I know that I have the self protective spirit within me, I just don’t think I have the reflexes and the strength anymore. The thing that concerns me about Concealed Carry is have the weapon handy at the time that you need it. Guns are too heavy for many of us to carry all the time. And you would have to have a lot fo practice to fire one off when necessary. If you fire too late and miss, you might as well not have fired at all.
