The first Tsar was a Viking. The Russians are Slavic, despite their name.
The way I understand it is that every Chief had a group of loyal bodyguards called the rus. There is speculation some Chiefs sailed in their shallow draft ships up what is now known as the Volga and some eventually settled in the area. Somehow the name Rus became Russia??
