I cut my teeth programming on the Mac, in 1985. I’m by no means an Apple cult worshipper now, but even twenty-five years ago it was apparent that Steve Jobs was not only a genius, but one who knew how to get things DONE. That is an exceptionally rare talent set that the world will miss going forward.
Jobs will always have my profound respect.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at your logic. He didn't buy it - Apple leased it, and then wrote it off. And the reason he did it was because he was in an internal war with the Apple II group at the time, who he was demonizing as stupid, uncouth, mouth-breathing losers compared to the Mac group. That's why he got them pianos and fruit drinks and massages and all the other perks, to show up the other group.
As for the rest of this thread - the idea that as long as he earned his money in a way that didn't get him thrown in jail, it means he was a stand-up guy - pretty much sums up every caracature of conservatives the liberals scream about. Not to mention the Christian absurdity: "And Jesus spake, "go thou and makest billions while avoiding the dungeon, and let no man therefore claim ye foul at heart, for thy money cleansest thee in the eyes of God."

Jobs and Woz have done plenty for charity and even supported my charities.

Maybe he was miserly with his charity, but through 2004, he’s on record of contributing over $200,000 to the Democrat Party and several Dem candidates, including Rahm Emanuel, Nancy Pelosi, and Teddy Kennedy.

Good for him. If he doesn’t want to waste his money on some scam of a charity, he shouldn’t have to. As for minimizing taxes - again, good for him.
Jobs did take stabs at setting up a foundation and other philanthropic projects, but business took up too much of his time.
As head of Apple he was taking a $1 a year salary. I know, I know, he had millions and millions, but still it's an indication that money wasn't everything for him.
We'll find out over time if Steve Jobs made large contributions and what charities he made them too.
P.S. Watch out for emails purporting to be from the "Steve Jobs Charitable Foundation." They're a scam.

Talking about education in a Smithsonian interview 16 years ago, he argued there was a lack of competition, that unions and bureaucrats had robbed it of market competition. He stated be believed in equal opportunity, not outcome. He wanted vouchers and merit-based teacher retention, not monopolies and tenure.
I detest the "look-at-me-aint-i-grand" thing. It's even worse with Bill Gates because his idea of "charity" is Planned Parenthood and the UN population fund.

Steve Jobs made money the old-fashioned way: he earned it. If he wanted to give it away or not, it was his prerogative to do with his fortune as he saw fit. Everyone else can just go pound sand.
