Why Did Mitt Romney Keep the Boy Scouts From Volunteering at the Olympics?

Remember the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah? Of course, that was what helped put Mitt Romney on the map nationally and internationally. Financially, the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC) was deep in the hole. Then the bribery scandal surrounding the bid hit the news in a big way.

The foundering committee turned to Mitt Romney, a guy with a great track record in turning around failing businesses. Romney came in and made everything better than even the most optimistic had hoped. The games went well (except for the ice skating scandal) and made money. Romney, who had previously failed in a 1994 bid for Ted Kennedy’s U.S. Senate seat, went home to Massachusetts and became governor.

I have been (slowly) reading Texas Governor Rick Perry’s book On My Honor. (I am not commenting here about Perry’s handling of the FLDS fiasco.) The book is about Perry’s experiences with the Boy Scouts of America. Perry particularly discusses the vendetta by some on the Left to purge the BSA from American public life.

I’m an Eagle Scout with 2 palms and Order of the Arrow. Mr. Romney’s lack of support for the Boy Scouts during the Salt Lake Olympics is repugnant. The first point of the Scout Law is that a Scout is Trustworthy. He violates that point everytime. I wish there were a way to rescind his Eagle Scout award. As POTUS he’d be an honorary chairman of this esteemed organization. We don’t need him as an example.

For politically correct reasons after the Supreme Court decision saying the BSA could ban gays from the organization. the second point of the Scout Law is Loyalty. He certainly wasn’t loyal to the BSA during that time.

Romney fails on the point of a Scout is Brave. A Scout is BRAVE.

A Scout can face danger even if he is afraid. He has the courage to stand for what he thinks is right even if others laugh at or threaten him.

Romney was just too cute about the boy scouts. He said, “of course the scouts are welcome to participate, they just have to wear the olympic uniform. He tried to stay on both side of the fence, but I thought is was repugnant. It looked slimy to me. The scouts have always participated in their own uniforms before.

This is very surprising considering the tight link between the Mormon community and the Boy Scouts. So, when push comes to shove, Romney places politics and political correctness above his church’s traditions?

Romney did want to use the scouts, but someone thought they were too young to be working, and he wasn’t allowed to use them.

The heading is misleading spin. Check the facts.

When push comes to shove, I think Slick Mitt will take whatever side he believes he stands to gain more from. For example, his hyper-pro-abortion stances when running in Massachusetts. Then, he later had an alleged pro-life “conversion” when he wanted the 2008 GOP Presidential nomination.

I guess if he gets a “burning in the bosom” concerning a controversial decision, he goes with it.

He could’ve come to their aid and told the committee Scouts have worked those venues before. They aren’t that young 11-18 years of age to be a Scout.

Why didn’t he call the committee or other deciders on the issue instead of let it go.

The facts also say he would let Scouts volunteer out of uniform, but not in uniform. If too young, why didn’t he ban all youth from working for being too young?

Sounds to me he didn’t want the controversey. I take that to be he won’t take a stand on what is right. Therefore, we don’t need him as POTUS.

Simple. The Boy Scouts at the time were under fire by the Democrats and their newsrooms for rejecting the idea that they should welcome homosexual scout leaders and let them take the little boys off into the woods. The Boy Scouts of America didn't think that was such a good idea. Naturally, Massachusetts Mittens sided with the homos.

Case closed.

According to many links that came up on a Google search, it was due to an age requirement for volunteers being 18 yrs or older, although other opportunities were offered to the scouts.

I can neither confirm nor deny these details, I have no connection to the USOC, LDS, or the Boy Scouts of America.

If thats the case, then I understand the policy - I don’t accept it- but I understand it. However, this demonstrates that Romney’s entire character is in question when facts are in dispute - Romney is so well known as a waffler that the real story of Scouts being underage to work the Olympics could be true, but he’s not credible.

Here are a couple of columns from that time period about the Boy Scouts being turned away by Romney and the Olympic Committee. The Boy Scouts had just won a Supreme Court case (in June of 2000 the Supreme Court ruled that the BSA was a private organization who could choose whoever they wanted as scout leaders and could therefore reject sodomites) and the Democrats/homos were still ticked off about it. Naturally, Romney was worried about the homo vote in Massachusetts so he gladly came up with a lame lie of an excuse.

Do some more searching. The lame excuse about “age” is a lie. The Boy Scouts were very involved in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

I think that is it. It is also the reason I am not exactly thrilled with Romney. Of course, if he is the nominee, I will crawl over ground glass to vote for him. I cannot have 4 more years of O’commie land.

Fence-straddling is exactly it.

You've got to understand Mitt:
* 1994: Heavily pro-abortion running vs. Teddy for Bay State Senate.
* 2002: Heavily pro-abortion running for Bay State Guv.

So, thinking long-term that he needed to toss a bone to more "pro-life" favored grassroots Mormondom during the Olympics in 2001, what did Mitt do for no real apparent reason?

Why, when he was in Utah, he wrote a letter-to-the-editor of a Utah newspaper (July 2001) proclaiming that he didn't consider himself "pro-choice."

So even sandwiched 'tween two heavy-duty pro-abortion political campaigns, he sought image damage control by lying to Utah readers.

Now if Mitt was so ready to toss pre-born babies literally under the bus, what's a Boy Scout or two?

Mitt no doubt had pre-figured at the time that he would run for gov in the Bay State. He knew Bay State politics in what they thought of the Scouts from a pro-homosexual perspective.

So Mitt, who had absolutely ZERO trouble aligning himself for so many years with the porn industry as a Board of Director for Marriott (taking in $25,000 per year + stock), "straight-"armed the 'Scouts if you will.
