Republican presidential candidates name their favourite movies

The Republican presidential candidates have named their favourite movies, and while everyone plays it pretty safe, there are some surprises in there.

Herman Cain says his favourite is The Godfather (a hilarious reference to his past in the pizza business), while Newt Gingrich goes for something old and grey: Casablanca. Michele Bachmann, meanwhile, goes for Braveheart and Saving Private Ryan, which both feature plenty of gallant losers.

Rick Santorum settled on the corny Field of Dreams, which is about getting people to come, while Ron Paul said he doesn’t watch a lot of movies but that his wife likes musicals such as The Sound of Music. Gary Johnson opted for the anti-Bolshevik epic Dr Zhivago.

Mitt Romney went for the Coen brothers’ O Brother, Where Art Thou? and Rick Perry opted for the somewhat surprising Immortal Beloved, in which Gary Oldman plays Beethoven. Somehow, the prospect of a movie night with the GOP candidates seems less appealing than ever.

A great movie.

Am I just old, or is it true that they just don’t make movies like they used to?

PATTON: I don't want to get any reports that we are holding our position. We're not holding on to anything, we'll let the Hun do that. We are advancing constantly and we're NOT INTERESTED in holding on to anything except the enemy. We're going to hold on to’m by the nose, and we're gonna kick’m in the a$$. We're going to kick the he11 out of him all the time and we're gonna go through him like crap through a goose.

I think you’re right. While “The Sound of Music” is nice, I think given the economic and world security situations being what they are... We need a leader more like Patton than Tony.

All those movies are good, some are great, so I don’t know why the conclusion that it wouldn’t be fun to watch a movie with the GOP.

Mitt Romney names one of my by golly favorite movies, I play the soundtrack all the time, uh oh.

“Mitt Romney names one of my by golly favorite movies, I play the soundtrack all the time, uh oh.”

Yes, that was REALLY surprising, it’s like wow, there must be a whole ‘nother side to Romney. Also Perry’s choice of “Immortal Beloved”, I had heard of that movie but had to look up and see what it was.

I’m thinking I’d like to watch it now, because if it is Rick Perry’s fave flick, it must be pretty good in some way.

This sort of reminds me of a time when we were staying at my mom-in-law’s summer place and I convinced a bunch of guys to watch “The Duelists” which was on the TV very late. I fell asleep almost immediately. Now, I always get annoyed when someone persuades me to watch a movie and then falls asleep during it, so I thought they’d be annoyed with me.

But they all LOVED the movie. They all said: it was great, it was about HONOR.

I still need to see that movie.

So, maybe that’ll be my double-bill, Immortal Beloved and The Duelists. Sounds pretty good, actually.

If I was voting based on this I would go with Newt and Casablanca. Mitt would have won if he had chosen a different Coen brothers movie. Raising Arizona.

Well, Gary Johnson is right about Doctor Zhivago, but not much else.
That movie has a phrase or situation that correctly and perceptively addresses every “There was room for 13 families in this one house!” argument we are hearing from the bolsheviks in America today.
Plus the cinematography is purely Rembrandt on celluloid.

Oct 29th on TCM my favorite movie was broadcast.

"The Great Race" contains many of the issues including womens rights but the most important scene parallels the GOP debates!

Debakery!

My favorite movie has changed over time. Right now it is Ben Hur with Heston and I also am very positive about the silent version. Others I have high regard for are Best Years of Our Lives, almost all of Keaton in the 20s and most Hitchcock.
