SHTF Planning: 20 Lessons from the Streets of Cairo
SHTF Plan ^ | 2/1/12 | Mac Slavo

Posted on 02/01/2012 9:18:43 PM PST by Kartographer

From the somewhat guilt filled comforts of Greece, I have been thinking about what I learned from the recent Cairo SHTF experience. I am not putting myself forth as an expert of any sort and, frankly, many or even most items on the list below might be flat out wrong….who the hell knows. We were in Cairo from Jan 25th until late Feb 3rd when the neighborhood gunfire became full-auto and regularly occurring. At that point, we decided that Friday prayers (the next day) might not yield a pleasant experience. We had no way of knowing that we had already seen the worst.

Outstanding article, and thanks for posting. I was an ex-pat for a decade and I have to concur, there is nothing like being a part of a local community, and yeah, sometimes it's a premium to be the big goofy American - even if it's embarrassing when you screw up you'd be surprised how forgiving people are for simply trying. Sometimes learning where that never-used back alley is can save your butt. Fixing a kid's bicycle one time saved mine. You really never know.

I only see your work. Saying that you are only dispersing and promoting someone else’s work, is a cop out, you are are the one bringing it here.

You also fight harshly in defense of the language, to the point of repeatedly telling me not to read your thread.

The adult thing for you to do, is to act as an adult, you are only hurting and marginalizing the survivalist movement, and setting back our gains over the decades of trying to earn a positive, mainstream image, and I never thought that the serious adults that used to make up our movement would start being overtaken by childish, trash talking, hipsters sounding like teens or TV writers trying to work in as much cussing as they can get away with before middle America boycotts them.

When you see such badly written articles, email the guy, tell him what you do with the articles that you find, how you like to introduce them to a wider audience, and that you can’t uses material written in such a childish, disgusting manner.

At least not to conservatives, and families, and suburban types, and all the other type people who are looking for sober, effective, adult writings that they can make hard copies of and put into the family preparedness album.

Seeing cussing as an occasional emphatic exclamation is one thing, but when it becomes the name of the survival movement and is used like it is in post #1 then it is overtaking something at least a half century old and making it coarse and ugly, and less acessible.

Why? Why would conservatives suddenly want to change preparedness, to the “ Shit “ movement.
Read post one, since when did conservatives start fighting to formalize that language, to insist on driving it into our daily culture, into our family conversations, as normal writing?

The survivalist movement, the prepper movement, is normal, everyday, family business, for all ages, the writings need to be put into the family preparedness folders and binders, it isn’t as though it is private adult conversations in private, in a back room, talking about porn, or hookers.

The adult thing for me to do is to ignore your post, which I will do from now on. If you have a problem with my post take it to Jim or the Moderators.

To all who are concerned over terms used in the prepper community:

SHTF is part of the language of the prepper community.
You can read it as “stuff” if it suits you, or if you just can’t get over that some people read it/say it differently, maybe you can just avoid prepper threads.

We all know that as preppers, we have to put up with crossing paths with folks we’d prefer not to have over for supper, from the hardcore Rambos to the hemp-sandled hippies. We don’t try to change them. We get the info or supplies we need and move on.

“When did conservatives start pushing to name movements and themselves to mainstream the word shit into our daily culture?”

About the same time you thought it was polite to use it in a post about such things.

“I can’t send these people articles on the “shit” movement, “

That’s twice now you’ve used the word. Sure seems like you have no problems using it or using it on a forum other people’s families and children read.

Why the fuss? Did you simply wake up on the wrong side of the bed?

I think the way it works is, when I want to respond to someone who creates a thread, I post to them.

I understand your point ansel12 but, quite frankly, you would have a lot more credibility with your side of the discussion if you would stop spelling the word out on this FAMILY forum.

That’s three times. Seems you not only like the word but have made it a habit.

The solution for you is very easy, write like an adult, to adults. The adult thing for you to do is to quit trying to dirty up the language like an insecure teenager or a good liberal .

Get a grip ansell, that is the acroynm used in the article - and is the word is used by the blog writer. Yes, in a real adult world that word is used and the acronym is a more gentle manner of expressing the term. Insert you own substitute like I do whenever I have to explain it.

It becomes childish to complain about the use of a word and distracts from the essence of the article is at hand.

BTW, the term was well established in the 'survivalist' circles back as far as the '60s, so don't try to snow this old timer. Glean the information you need from the article and move on.

As conservatives on a conservative activist web site, we can try to effect positive change in our nation’s culture, but especially in what is one of mostly, our own subculture.

We can fight the left, and their destruction of our culture and society, the survivalist movement is a community where conservatives and Christians have a very strong position, we can definitely speak out and even become selective in our sources to nip this childish embarrassment.

None of us can change what words or acronyms are used all over the internet, but we can certainly avoid spelling out profane words ourselves, and use other phrases such as “prepping for collapse” or “preparing for The Troubles” etc.

But most people who see the acronym “SHTF” don’t spell out the offensive word, and it’s part of the common lexicon now.

I’m cool with SHTF. This is an adult website, we’re adults, and it’s a serious subject.

Get over yourself, ansell2.

I’m 60 years old and remember my grandfather using the term. You’ve actually spelled it out many times as people have noted. Grow up.

Thanks for posting the article, Kart!

LOL, your grandfather has used it in private conversation?

When he starts joining the movement to make it mainstream, to change the name of our half century old movement to it, and works it into every nook and cranny of public life like the left desires, then call me.
