Veterinarians in the USAF inspected foods that were stored for the troops. Certain items, ie. rice, beans, sugar, salt, oats, and some other grains can be stored for almost eight years without deterioration. In 1974 we inspected grains and canned items that had been in shipping containers from Wheelus AFB since Libya kicked the US out and most were palatable except for a couple of boxcars full of grits that had been infested with flour beetles. Canned K-rations from the 1940’s were palatable and wholesome when inspected in 1974-77 except for items of high acidity. In the 1980’s I had to condemn items in fallout shelters that had been in storage from 1950 to 1982 that were not palatable or wholesome because they had been stored improperly. Survival rations that were stored in the galleys of KC 135’s and B-52s packed in the 1960’s were palatable and wholesome but were not tasty. I still have cases of them. Freeze dried items are great for storage and have years of shelf life. Rotation of canned items is paramount. Sometimes I just take the older cans to a food pantry for the poor and donate them.

“Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matt. 6:31-33)

Bet the farm that we’ll be painted as big-time kooks.

Actually, that might play into the hands of serious preppers. Fewer folks to compete with.

Thanks for the reminder. I plan on watching. I figure I may learn something and I can always ignore any parts that are sensationalized or just plain nuts. No harm in investing an hour of my time watching it.

Thanks for all ya do Kart!!! :)

Has anyone tried the reusable canning lids? I stay stocked up on the regular ones ‘cause if we have a serious long term power outage I have two freezers of food that will have to be canned.

If there is a ping list, please add me.

I haven’t used them but people I know highly recommend the reusable ones. Depends on which ones you are referring to of course.

I only can fruits and jams and juices, waterbath, but I re-use regular lids every year. When I open a jar of something, I’m careful not to bend the edges at all. If the lid has no scratches inside and still has a good amount of rubbery stuff, I wash carefully and stack them in boxes and re-use them. Some lids this summer I’d re-used a couple of times already. They sea up fine. Now since I re-use the ones that aren’t scratched or bent in any way, instead of magic markers to write contents and date, I use a wax pencil so I can rub it off! I’m not a huge canner, I did about 270 jars this year. If i get a garden going this year with extra produce I might try pressure canning.

Anyone know where I can buy freeze dried food at an actual store retail location? I saw that REI sells Mountain Home. I would like to purchase small amounts at a time in cash.
Thanks guys.

If you shop and store some food at home, is that being unfaithful to God?

People aren’t preparing for potential problems because they want “salvation” or to live forever. It’s mere common sense.

“If you shop and store some food at home, is that being unfaithful to God?”

I’m reminded of Joseph and Pharoh’s dream with the seven fat cows and the seven skinny cows, etc. (Or whatever it was).

It is perhaps unfaithful to WORRY about the future, but I imagine there are also many verses about being prudent and planning, investing wisely (the parable of the talents), etc.

My old tagline was Ever Vigilant, Never Fearful.
