On Tuesday Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of the House committee on Oversight and Government Reform, took a major step toward holding Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress for his failure to provide subpoenaed documents and other information about Operation Fast and Furious.

This would be a good thing, if he Boehner doesn’t get in the way.

I thought Boehner had clipped Issa's wings and pulled his leash?

Until they actually arrest Holder and lead him away in cuffs, which I'll believe when I see it, I think this is pretty much Issa's last arrow.

Doesn't matter. The media will run cover for Holder/Obama and Issa will have his career ruined.

Get used to it, the game is over. All we can do is to prepare for the coming downfall. There is no political fix to be had.

Lock, load and hide mes amis!

Not much of a ‘giant step’. How about you keep steppin’ until Holder is in jail where he belongs.

I first noticed this when I was in the service back during 'Nam.

It was clear that this wouldn't be over until whitey was the slave. One problem, some peoples can be enslaved, others can't. This is the reason why we imported slaves rather than using the indigenous peoples - they would rather die.

Although too old to be a useful slave, I ain't shining no boots but my own.

What has Boehner done to obstruct Issa?

“Issa takes step...”

This are the “steps” he took:
- He asked Holder to assign someone to be the go-between him and Holder.
- He asked Holder for a date on which he will provide the subpoened documents. Since they are already 5 days late on a 4 month old order to produce the requested documents, this amounts to an extension. This only permits further spin, obfuscation, destruction of evidence and silencing of witnesses.
- He threatened Holder with contempt.

I’ve been an Issa fan for a long long time. I still am.

But there is now solid evidence of contempt AND perjury.
Mr. Issa: It is time to begin with proceedings. No more baby steps. Justice delayed is justice denied.

Well, well, well...indeed. Let us hold our breath and pray.

From the article:

On Tuesday in a seven-page letter, Issa revealed that Deputy Attorney General James Cole begged Congress to extend the Feb. 9 deadline. Issa wrote that the request was “ironic” and “ignores the reality that the Department has unreasonably delayed producing these documents to the Committee.”

“On its face, the requested extension demonstrates a lack of good faith,” Issa wrote to Holder. “With one exception, the Department has only produced documents responsive to the subpoena on the eve of congressional hearings in which senior Department officials testified. The Department appears to be more concerned with protecting its image through spin control than actually cooperating with Congress.”

“We cannot wait any longer for the Department’s cooperation,” Issa continued. “As such, please specify a date by which you expect the Department to produce all documents responsive to the subpoena. In addition, please specify a Department representative who will interface with the Committee for production purposes.”

Issa added that whoever Holder designates as the go-to DOJ official for delivering subpoenaed documents “should also serve as the conduit for dealing with the contempt proceedings, should the Department continue to ignore the Committee’s subpoena.”

Ooooh. Does that mean holder would have to wear a scarlet C on his lapel pocket? Don’t we all know by know that these laws and rules mean nothing to the king and his men? What or who would actually be able to penalize these usurpers?

There was a rumor that Boehner made some deal on the issue of perjury. You have no idea how angry that would make me, if true.

The issue here is contempt of Congress.

I'm warning you ... I'll tell your father when he gets home if you don't do as I say.

Exactly. Look at the bold extent of the damage Obama, Holder, et. al. have done in 3 years, and the repubs are taking the tiniest baby steps and half measures. I'm sick of the sloth's pace and ultimate spinelessness of what should be the opposition party. It's depressing.

I've taken the bait and gotten excited at what reads like good news here for years now; it NEVER pans out. I'm convinced that even the "best" republicans aren't really serious.

I mean, just look at the votes on NDAA.

Maybe he can keep this farce going until after the election, then he can get really, really really, mad.

Age old pissing match. Congress versus Executive Privledge. Compared to the “biggies” like Iran-Contra and Watergate, this is a medium sized pissing match.

Question: Why on earth would the corrupt-to-the-core Eric Holder give a rat’s behind if congress “holds him in contempt”?

When is a deadline not a deadline?

When a demand date comes and goes and the response is to write a letter asking for more time to comply.

When is enforcement in the offing?

It sure is not when the enforcer says, name a date for your own compliance.

Issa speaks the language of weakness, as though he does not want it to come to a head. Either he hasn’t got the data he says he does, or his goal is not to get the information but merely to use it as a political club.

If they are serious, they need to mount a challenge.

How to Give Mixed Messages 101:
  1. Mister Issa writes the scofflaws to say “We cannot wait any longer for the Department’s cooperation”

Pony it up NOW! IMMEDIATELY! We will wait not one day longer!

  2. Mister Issa continues “As such, please specify a date by which you expect the Department to produce all documents responsive to the subpoena."

But then "Take as long as you want!"
