Weekly Prepper Thread
2/17/12 | Kartographer

Posted on 02/17/2012 1:00:17 PM PST by Kartographer

Ok I've been asked by a few members of the Preppers Ping list to start a weekly thread to post things like good preparedness supply buys, small discoveries and helpful hints which possible by themselves would make a interesting thread, but would be of interest to fellow preppers. So here goes. I'll try and do this every Friday and see how it goes.

TOPICS: Society
KEYWORDS: getreadyhereitcomes; preparedness; preparednessping; prepperping; preppers; prepperweekly; survivalping

My contribution for this week is that I found some 275 gallon food grade plastic totes for sale on craigslist. $100 if picked up $125 delived. This would give you a month and half to two months of water for a family of four.

We're also going to try to replace some of our older servers and failing equipment this year so we're going to add a little extra to our FReepathon goals. John is estimating ten to fifteen thousand to do this and I'd like to get it all in place and working before the election cycle is fully heated up, so we'll try to bring in a little more now if we can and the rest next quarter.

Let me give a word to those living in cities or close to them:

If you can’t leave now, at least try to find a place away, far away, from the fan, before the stuff hits it. It’s gonna be UGLY....

Some food grade plastics are vulnerable to UV, so I'd check the specs and keep them covered or inside.

A couple of thoughts - the water in the toilet tank is drinkable.

Also, you can bleed the house lines for a few gallons.

“Good idea —

Too True ...
But also , it may provoke a few ‘newbies’ into ‘prepping’.
Moreover, it may provide insight into things we might have otherwise forgotten, or over looked .

Great idea-those containers are very common out here where I live-nearly all of us have at least one in case our wells get too low in dry years (like the last one). They’re used for rain capture, and/or storing water purchased from other sources.

Don’t forget your hot water heater(s).
Especially if you have more than one,
that’s over a hundred gallons.

A story, since it's Friday (and some silliness is indicated)... I was talking with my brother about preparedness, and his big concern was safe water.

I had to pull him short. We both live near large bodies of fresh water, and we both grew up working in the family construction company THAT BUILDS WATER TREATMENT PLANTS!

His reply was "Oh.. yeah." And then after thinking about it for a bit said he probably had enough equipment to process a few thousand gallons a day out in his scrap pile (he wound up owning a construction company). Duh.

Moral of the story is look around and THINK.

I looked it up. Seems OK to store booze and beer in plastic for short periods, but not for long periods. Manufacturers of the booze and beer are evasive on the exact shelf life, apparently.

I’m not a chemist so I wouldn’t be sure on this.

Also, you can bleed the house lines for a few gallons.

For those of you with a second home, bleeding the lines keeps them from bursting during winter freezes. That's one less worry and one less $$$ repair.

If you’re storing jugs or bottles of water, store them on the floor or bottom shelf rather than an upper shelf. When they leak, and they will, it won’t drip down and ruin your other supplies.

Good point on the UV problem. I had one of those totes sitting out, Fully exposed at the gulch and in 6 months it shattered at a touch on the parts that got strong sun.

At least cover them with a tarp.

I found some small VERY BRIGHT solar powered LED flashlights. Too bad these are made in China, however, they are extremely handy and the plus is you don't need batteries. Made with a caribbeaner hook. I bought a few and keep them on the windowsills for power outages, they are quick to grab. I went searching to see if larger quantities can be bought and this is the best deal I found on amazon. Sorry you'll have to cut and paste the link. (html impaired)
