Weekly Prepper Thread
2/17/12 | Kartographer

Posted on 02/17/2012 1:00:17 PM PST by Kartographer

Ok I've been asked by a few members of the Preppers Ping list to start a weekly thread to post things like good preparedness supply buys, small discoveries and helpful hints which possible by themselves would make a interesting thread, but would be of interest to fellow preppers. So here goes. I'll try and do this every Friday and see how it goes.

There are better sources. Depending on level of activity and weather you need at least 3 gallons a day per person.

Timely ping. I just found this while perusing other wood cutting equipment. I have two other weighted vertical splitters, but this one from LogmaticUSA looks to be superior.

I having been looking at different "power out" type of wood gathering equipment. Splits are a necessary chore for controlling smaller wood stove outputs.

What I started doing which is MUCH cheaper is I brought a dehydrator and dehydrate my own. I great frozen vegetables when they are on sale and they are all ready for the dehydrator then I vacuum seal them in canning jars! chocchipcookie has plenty of info on her Survival Mom site and there is a section in my Preparedness Manual on both dehydrating as well as vacuum canning.

Still sick from the flu I’ve had for the past two days. Makes this tough because I want to do some prepping but just don’t have much energy right now.

Your list doesn't include personal economic collapse. I used up about 2 years worth of stored food after 2008. Sometimes, the disaster you face may be your own personal disaster. I was grateful that I had the food put by.

That looks good too, although I’m not sure why you would you need the hand crank. Thanks.

The stuff off my list could fill a book and it wasn't intended to be all inclusive. Personal disasters are valid too - it is just that everyone needs to assess their needs.

I have heard that 3 gal/day/pers number before, but I have to tell you, it is crap.

I didn’t use that much water as a young paratrooper out in the desert.

And believe me, it was hot, and we were REALLY active.

According to a young Leutenant I helped raise, you actually can drink the water in the toilet bowl.

Of course, I had to stop him from jumping off the roof, once, right onto a tree stump buried in the snow.

Sorry. I have to take exception to you here. I worked as a sub for ARAMCO in Kingdom for 5 years. The recommendation was 5 gallons a day per person. I did 4 gallons myself. Granted, interior temps reached 140F, but that was my mileage. Three (3) gallons is a safe number. There is nothing wrong with the margin. YMMV.

I live in Florida, not really a desert but its hot.

Its easy to use 3 gal per day. Drinking, cooking, and basic washing. So I disagree.

Thank you for your response. I have seen the Harmony House web site I was kind of seeking something lower priced for example 1lb of spinach flakes from S.F. Herbs is $6.85 and 18 oz bottle from H.H. is $29.95
The pepper comparison is even worse.
