A US Census Bureau study indicated that an estimated 1.46 million families in the United States are now living on less than $2 per day. This is more than twice as many as the estimated 636,000 families that were living at a like standard in 1996.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius hailed the report as a tribute to the affirmative steps taken by this Administration to lower the cost of living. Critics have been quick to harp on the negatives of high unemployment, declining wages, and falling home values as if that were the total picture. Were hoping that this study opens peoples eyes to the other side of the equation.
Also, lets not discount the environmental benefits of living on less, Sebelius urged. The more people we can get to live like this the less our economy will have to produce. That means fewer smoke-belching factories and less road traffic. A lower need for materials means we can stop raping nature and return more land to a wilderness status. And lets not forget the gains in leisure time attained by every person that no longer has to work to produce the excessive amount of unnecessary stuff that a so-called affluent society demands.
That minorities make up a disproportionately large fraction of those living so parsimoniously was held to be encouraging by the Secretary. These are the fastest growing segments of the population, she pointed out. The trend foretells of a future where the majority will live as frugally as only a minority does now.

Bet most are from Mexico.
Wish I could live on $2.00 a day. I'd be able to save a lot of money that way.

You have to really like Ramen Pride noodles...
I do not believe this.
They may not EARN more than $2 a day. I would bet they are getting plenty of redistributed earnings of the producers.
I also have two wives down here in Mexico
L O L !
LOL! Good stuff. Who’d ever thought letting kids run the government would be so much fun! We’re not just saving the planet, we’re saving the whole flippin’ universe!
NOT GUILTY, GUILTY.
I do like Ramen noodles. Not everyday but I do like them.
I lived on less than that in college.
You can’t keep extra wives up here. There are tax implications after all.
Thanks to college, I know about fifty ways to have ramen noodles.
my favorites were stir-fry ramen and eggs with Tabasco (made on a dorm hot plate), and the real kicker: dry ramen with peanut butter... Hmm... Crunchy. :-)
"We consume about 25 percent of the worlds oil. We only have 2 percent of the reserves. Even if we doubled U.S. oil production, were still really short." - Barack Hussein 0bama; March 30, 2011
The one with eggs sounds good.
I have a 5$ a day budget myself ........ BTTT !.....;o)
Stay safe John !
Almost got me that time. It’s getting hard and harder to differentiate between satire and reality.
The one with eggs really was very good. Make the ramen first, and pour off almost all, but not all, the water. Dump in a hot skillet (or wok) and break two raw eggs into the noodles. Stir vigorously until eggs are cooked (no longer runny) and water has boiled off. Add Tabasco to taste.
dang... You’re right... I should do a ramen cookbook.
There’s this one with hotdogs and ketchup...
Yuh lucky bastuhd!
I know envy and covetousness are sins but.....
We only have 2 percent of the reserves.
The 2% is bogus. It doesn’t include massive oil shale reserves, Coal to Oil technology, Alaska and California (self imposed off limits).
Were doing this to ourselves. Its another way of draining this country of its money and transferring it to the 3rd world.
I made some yesterday after the boss went on strike.
Some green onions, celery, red pepper, peppered and browned before cooking the noodles.
I cooked the noodles, chicken flavor and sprinkled some dill.
when the noodles were about 2/3 cooked I put two eggs in and par boiled. I like yolk to be gooey.
SOHHHHH GOOD!
She came back and asked how I liked eating that “stuff”.
I’m ashamed to say I lied to her and hoped I wouldn’t have to eat that “stuff” for a long time.
She aactually bought it and asked me if I was going to be good boy from now on. Yes I will(and I’m a liar! LOL I put a two burner stove in my office! so I can make some on Monday)
Only 5 more years. No problemo.

Exactly! This is the great con job of poverty statistics. They don’t count non-cash benefits. So, somebody could be getting “free” food stamps, housing, medical care, utility payments, meals for the kiddies at school, and even “free” phone service plus have a samll income and be counted as living in poverty. It’s a ruse designed to make Americans think their fellow citizens are starving in the streets. It’ BS!
heh... Nice. I will of course let you know before I steal that for my book.
:-)
It can be done if you forsake trends, fads and hype.
Fish, hunt and grow your own.
Use wood for fuel, invest wisely in self sufficient power sources.
And then give the big royal middle finger to society.
Living on less than $2 a day is an achievement not a sign of poverty. But it can apply to both.
Oh, I know. We have more oil and gas in U.S. territory than Bill Gates has pennies.
I got lots of em
This is supposed to be a satire thread and you go yanking us back to reality! LOL
I hear it’ll have a small version of the Chevy Volt under the pickup bed as a spare...
I’ve got a tarrogon basil recipe. another that with pest another with pest Roma tomatoes and basil. tons
How much you wanna bet that a significant number are Obama supporters... and Idiots?
But I repeat myself.
We should not be able to sleep at night knowing that our fellow citizens are quietly living lives of quiet desperation as Thoreau so eloquently stated.
Just the other day I heard a news story about riots that broke out across the country when this squalorly segment of our population was made aware there was a new supply of footwear for them to replace the makeshift "shoes" they'd be wearing which consisted mostly of newspaper and animal hides wrapped around their bloody and blistered stumps held on only by whatever was left of their shirts or pants that served as string.
Or was I reading a book about the conditions George Washington's soldiers endured fighting The Revolutionary War?
Whatever. Same difference.
And then, to add insult to injury, after the riots broke out, the stores decided not to sell the shoes after all! Well, at least not at midnight as first advertised.
And then, to add neener-neeners to insult to injury, they jacked the prices of the shoes up to 200 dollars when just this past Christmas they could've bought similar shoes for only 180 dollars.
This country truly has a lot to be ashamed of. I don't know why people from the rest of the world keep flocking here.
Absolutely one of your best, John! Keep up the great work of displaying the deep thoughts of these people in “high office!”
Don’t like brunettes, huh?
You can bet the kids are getting at least two tax-payer funded meals a day at school. (Some schools provide an evening meal as well.) And the mothers with babies are buying food with their tax-payer funded WIC cards. And they are living in tax-payer subsidized housing. And they are making money under the table and not reporting it. How else could they afford Obama’s $4/gal. gas, cigarettes, and beer?
And I’ve been caught by the satire trap this AM! Thanks for getting my blood pressure up. At my age, that’s a plus.
Sorry but you and I have never met let alone had dinner together......
Looks like you and several others missed the source for this “story”.
“Semi-News/Semi-Satire”
Yeah, but they're not both YOUR wife, LOL.
LOL, this one is really rich, it sounds like something I’d say.
Rush talked about that just yesterday, and disproved the whole notion.
With the shale oil finds, we are close to (if not already) being the nation with the largest oil reserves in the world.
This is just another lie told by liberals and socialists, and repeated by their lap dog media b!#ches.
Once again, this satire is extremely close to the truth.
