Carbon taxes 'to ease fuel poverty'
The UK Press Association ^ | February 27, 2012

Billions raised from carbon taxes should be used to lift millions of households out of fuel poverty, a coalition of charities and businesses has urged.

Research for the "energy bill revolution" campaign suggests 6.4 million households are in fuel poverty in the UK, forced to spend more than a tenth of their income on bills to keep their houses warm.

Based on projections for costs of gas and take-up of Government policies to improve energy efficiency of homes, the study warned the number of households in fuel poverty could rise by 40% to 9.1 million by 2016. This would mean one in three homes was suffering from fuel poverty in the year the Government had set as a target to eradicate the problem.

However, revenues from carbon taxes are expected to raise £4 billion a year over the next 15 years - money which could be used to lift 87% of suffering homes out of fuel poverty and make the rest as efficient as houses being built today.

The study by energy efficiency experts Camco suggests the funding could allow 600,000 homes a year to receive grants averaging £6,500 to install insulation and take other steps to make them more efficient. The move could create 30,000 to 50,000 new jobs directly, and up to 200,000 in the wider economy, cut £310 from household bills, and deliver up to four times the carbon reductions of the Government's planned energy efficiency programmes....

Billions raised from carbon taxes should be used to lift millions of households out of fuel poverty...
  1. "fuel poverty" = made-up hysteria for an issue that has existed for millennia. By this definition, I live in "fuel poverty" during the hottest and coldest parts of the year, and chances are so do you. Unless you're having to choose between eating and heating, this is B.S.
  2. a "billion" to fix a "million"? So $1000 each? Why does this math not jive with the numbers in the rest of the article? And, as always, who gets to decide and how large and inefficient will be the dispensing agency?
  3. carbon tax = global warming hoax tax. 'nuff said.

It's not the ridiculousness of the attempts to repackage and sell global warming over and over, that's what hucksters do - "same old sh!t in a brand-new package!" - what's irksome is that no one seems to even notice it any more.

Note that if it was a free enterprise system, with normal accounting, the fuel savings only have a 21 year payback for the initial investment.

It all sounds so familiar. Tack some plastic over the windows and a dab of caulk where the glazing has lost its seal. Right. Now your home is “Winterized” and another CETA Job has been created, “Winterizing Technician” looks so smart on a resume’.

Any money collected goes into the general fund and politicians spend it on whatever they want....not on some silly “fuel poverty”.

What a line! I agree. Obama will eat this idea up....ranks right up there with King George.

a "billion" to fix a "million"? So $1000 each?

After that $1000 winds its way through the government, it will be more like $100 when it gets to the home owner.

Liberals are always chasing their own tails.

The carbon tax will raise the price of energy wiping out any benefit to its recipients. It's the same over here where utlities are required to provide help in weatherizing homes so people can save money on energy.

Then -- after it's worked and energy usage drops -- the state grants rate increases to the utilities to compensate them for the reduced consumption. And don't even get me started on how raising the minimum wage causes prices to go up.

“CETA?” You just showed your age! It was JTPA for many years and now I don’t know what name they’re using.
