A public notice about your private history (Or Google will do bad things to you).

I don’t worry that some of my information can be easily accessed on the web. I think I’m typical of most people in my generation who have grown accustomed to taking privacy into their own hands. My rule of thumb is this: if it’s a free service on the internet, you’re probably the product. In many instances, that’s not a terrible trade off. Facebook, for example, uses my information to target ads to my profile, but I can think of worse violations of my privacy in exchange for an easy platform to share information with my friends.

Google is revising their privacy policy in March, though, and it doesn’t look up my alley (and it probably won’t be up yours). So don’t wait for some dopey Congressman to slap a large, sweeping law that will invade more of your personal liberties (think SOPA). Take matters into your own hands and enter a 21st century frame of mind, one filled with personal responsibility: How to Remove Your Google Search History Before Google’s New Privacy Policy Takes Effect (courtesy of the Electronic Frontier Foundation).

Nothing you can do at this web site will have any effect on google’s collection of your search data. All you can change is whether you and your ‘friends’ can see it.

Google will still collect it, and sell it.

Google has found itself on a collision course with European regulators after a provisional finding that its new privacy policy breaches European law.

Despite a fresh request from regulators to postpone the March 1 adoption of the new policy, the US search company gave no sign of backing down on Tuesday and reiterated its defence of its new approach to handling user data.

I have no doubt that would attract some attention nobody needs.

Probably only slightly less interest gathering, than threatening the President.

Firefox removes my cookies and history

I use Firefox too but I checked under account/history in Google drop down menu and found my search history still there. I deleted mine, hoping that I will stop getting emails from people I don't want any from.

Should we also remove ‘facebook’? And if so, how can we do that?

choose view source, then search for ‘google’

I didn't think there would be anything on FR. And I looked and just saw google in the title, keywords, article and posts. Until the very end of the page - where the Google Urchin Tracker shows up. Does FR receive revenue from that? Does it provide features used within FR? With this, Google can combine my FR page views with other Google access data and other web sites that silently include Google code. Hi, Big Brother!

one of many things google provides is a free tool called ‘analytics’. freerepublic and zillions of other sites use this. it keeps track of every view of every page on your site. it is tremendously useful for figuring out how many viewers you have, what your viewers do when they are on your site, and what web sites they come from, what they were looking for that led them to your site. by using this tool, you are pretty much involving google in every page view of your website. i don’t know what else they do with the information.. you can find the analytics script by looking for the text UA- for the account number.
