Did Woodrow Wilson praise the Bolshevik Revolution?

In Wilson's War Message to Congress on 2 April, 1917, Woodrow Wilson said the following:

A steadfast concert for peace can never be maintained except by a partnership of democratic nations. No autocratic government could be trusted to keep faith within it or observe its covenants. It must be a league of honour, a partnership of opinion. Intrigue would eat its vitals away; the plottings of inner circles who could plan what they would and render account to no one would be a corruption seated at its very heart. Only free peoples can hold their purpose and their honour steady to a common end and prefer the interests of mankind to any narrow interest of their own.

Does not every American feel that assurance has been added to our hope for the future peace of the world by the wonderful and heartening things that have been happening within the last few weeks in Russia? Russia was known by those who knew it best to have been always in fact democratic at heart, in all the vital habits of her thought, in all the intimate relationships of her people that spoke their natural instinct, their habitual attitude towards life. The autocracy that crowned the summit of her political structure, long as it had stood and terrible as was the reality of its power, was not in fact Russian in origin, character, or purpose; and now it has been shaken off and the great, generous Russian people have been added in all their naive majesty and might to the forces that are fighting for freedom in the world, for justice, and for peace. Here is a fit partner for a league of honour.

It would be entirely fair(as much as I dislike Wilson) to point out that he could not have known that they would go on to slaughter 20+ million people. I suppose you could say that it was a good thing that the Russia was overthrowing the Tsars and "moving toward freedom"(which was their claim) - the problem is their definition of freedom. Wilson, like the Bolsheviks, had a belief in collective freedom, and freedom for the state. Not freedom for the individual. Or, at best, freedom for the individual is secondary to the primary of freedom for the state. It was Wilson who wrote that Democracy and Socialism are one and the same.

If anybody wants on/off the revolutionary progressivism ping list, send me a message

Progressives do not want to discuss their own history. I want to discuss their history.

Summary: Wilson's comments during the "glorious revolution"

So too did Newt Gingrich praise and adore Woodrow Wilson, and even called himself a “ Wilsonian “ .

He’s referring to the overthrow of Czar Nicholas II and the Provisional Government led by Alexander Kerensky in February/March of 1917.

The Bolshevik Revolution did not occur until October/November 1917.

(Julian Calendar/Gregorian Calendar, Russia was on the Julian Calendar until after the Reds took over)

I’d like to see the citation of proof for your assertion. Where, when, in what context did Gingrich do this?

Amd that's not really freedom at all because not all people want the same things but are forced to support or even pay for what others want (like birth control or Chevy Volts)

60 million dead in the gulags might disagree, but who cares? Omelets and eggs, that's all.

In April of 1917, when Wilson made those remarks, the Reds did not control the Russian Revolution.

Russian Revolution Timeline.

1917

•February 23-27 (March 8-12 NS) - The February Revolution begins with strikes, demonstrations, and mutinies in Petrograd (also called the March Revolution if following the Gregorian calendar)

•March 2 (March 15 NS) - Czar Nicholas II abdicates and includes his son. The following day, Nicholas' brother, Mikhail announced his refusal to accept the throne. Provisional Government formed

•April 3 (April 16 NS) - Lenin returns from exile and arrives in Petrograd via a sealed train

•July 3-7 (July 16-20 NS) - The July Days begin in Petrograd with spontaneous protests against the Provisional Government; after the Bolsheviks unsuccessfully try to direct these protests into a coup, Lenin is forced into hiding

•July 11 (July 24 NS) - Alexander Kerensky becomes Prime Minister of the Provisional Government

•August 22-27 (September 4-9 NS) - The Kornilov Affair, a failed coup by General Lavr Kornilov, commander of the Russian Army

•October 25 (November 7 NS) - The October Revolution - the Bolsheviks take over Petrograd (also called the November Revolution if following the Gregorian calendar)

•October 26 (November 8 NS) - The Winter Palace, the last holdout of the Provisional Government, is taken by the Bolsheviks; the Council of People's Commissars (abbreviated as Sovnarkom), led by Lenin, is now in control of Russia

You can also read about the "Polar Bear" expidition here. In 1918, Willson sent the US Army into Russia to fight the Bolshivics (Reds) in support of the "White Russian" forces.

Wilson was a "Progressive" who did a lot of damage. But he wasn't a commie.

Newt's campaign is rapidly losing support and is hemorrhaging...
One of Newt's people in Tennessee jumped ship and endorsed Rick Santorum..

The Bolshevik’s false front use of democrats and liberals is interesting in comparison with the islamist’s use of democrats and moderates in the Arab Spring.

The burden of proof is on you, smartass, as you are the one who made the assertion.

Separately, I did not state anything about whom I support in the upcoming election.

You’re kidding, right? If you make a claim, you ought to be able to back it up. I don’t know if you’re right or wrong, but I’m going to have to assume from your refusal to provide documentation that you are wrong.

And, just to forestall that response, I’m not a Newt supporter.

No argument there. But he didn’t praise the Bolshevik Revolution BEFORE IT HAPPENED.

Ditto that... and Wilson actually sent the US Army into Russia in 1918 (after Lenin and the commies hijacked the Russian Revolution) They ended up fighting the damn Bolsheviks, not supporting them. We lost a couple of hundred men there on damn nasty duty in ugly far-away places and some of their remains we have never recovered.

I don't know who started this thread or if there was any motive to do so, (suspect that there was) but the entire premise that Wilson supported the commies is pure BS.

If anything, with his Red Scare and his Attorney General at the time (Palmer), he made Joseph McCarthy look to be soft on the commies. Wilson actually put those guys in prison with no trials --- and got away with it.

I guess at least one person on this thread intends this to be a slap at Newt because Newt said something good about Wilson. Wilson was a Progressive jerk for sure, (probably not as bad as Teddy Roosevelt would have been if he had been elected in 1912) but he was not a socialist or a commie by any definition of those words.

Anyone who wants to buy into that fiction should set back and read some history.

Good Lord, this is why I hate this damn Primary System we are stuck with. It devolves into nothing but fratricide against people who are natural allies. It's a classic divide & conquer recipe. We should be directing all of our fire at the enemy --- Obama and the leftist Democrats, rather than trying to destroy each other.

People pushing this s**t are no friends of The Free Republic. I'm sick of seeing this crap on these pages.
